Is it similar to the browser? In other words, if you don't hold the home button down in the browser for a few seconds it still runs in the background and drains your battery. Must you do the same in your apps? If you simply hit the home button for a second, will it drain the battery? I hope this makes sense.

I believe some applications will continue and some will stop.

Holding the home button to quit applications is "force quitting" it. I remember this being a tip to save battery power on the first iPhone as well. I no longer do it though because when you force quit an app, it does not write back to the ram (or something like that) Basically it doesn't save the last thing you were doing.

How else are yousupposed to exit an application if its not by pushing the button on the bottom?

There is a difference. When you hold the home button for a couple of seconds (Like 5 seconds) it force quits it instead of just exiting and leaving most still "on".
