I'm getting one after all the hoopla settles, and the local AT&T stores have them in stock. It's not worth driving 100+ miles to the nearest APPLE store(Memphis, Tn)

I can't really answer, as I haven't completely decided whether or not I'm getting one. I would love to be able to use 3G and GPS, and the improved audio as well as the flush jack an redesign would be very welcome. However, I'm guessing that next year, Apple will introduce a sort of iPhone "Pro" that will not replace iPhone 3G, but sell alongside it. The iPhone will feature hardware and software improvements that will not be given to iPhone 3G. In other words, I want to be eligible for the subsidized price.
Disclaimer: I'll most likely end up getting 3G, and if I'm not eligible for the next iPhone, I'll pay full price. :)

You Could always do DF (Direct Fulfillment) Youll get your order quicker than the stores will get them back in stock

Stood in line for almost 3 hours at a AT&T store. There was a little over 20 people in front of me. I'm not sure if I'll ever do this again, if I do I'll make sure the iphone comes with me for entertainment.

I reserved mine today via Direct Fulfillment. I woke up early and got to the Apple Store right when they opened because apple.com said they would have them in, only to find out that they didn't get any and have no idea when they will get more. So after a couple attempts to find one, I got sick of it and just ordered it through Direct Fulfillment. Apple really sucks for not allowing internet orders this year.
I don't have any proof to back this up, but I'm guessing because so many people are using Direct Fulfillment that Apple is shipping most of their iPhone 3G's to AT&T warehouses to fill all the Direct Fulfillment orders that have been placed and paid for in full. Like I said, I don't have anything to confirm this, it's just my belief. But in my mind it makes sense so I'm sticking with it.
For those who haven't gotten one yet or ordered through Direct Fulfillment, the Apple site's availability page isn't that accurate, at least in my experiences with it. I suggest just going through Direct Fulfillment, because at least you'll be guaranteed to get it instead of waiting in line only to find out you're not one of the lucky ones. Or waiting in line only to have to settle for the whatever model is in stock instead of the model/color you originally wanted or go home empty handed.

I am waiting for several things:
1. Easier to get.
2. More memory (perhaps by the holidays?)
3. Wait for the current "bugs" to get worked out.
I am still under contract with T-Mobile here in the US, so I have to wait a little anyways.

I did basically a similar thing. The apple site turned out wrong and I waited in line I an hour just to be told their website was wrong and they do nor have a shipment. So I went to an AT&T store and did direct fulfillment. This was on Tuesday before noon. And I received my phone exactly 3days later on Friday. I am extremely satisfied with how fast my shipment came in. And i do think anyone direct fulfilling should expect their phone pretty soon. It's just required by at&t to say it may take as king as 7-21 days but I think everyone will get it sooner or maybe exactly a week or so

got mine on launch day from the AT&T store. Waited about 2 hours and walked out first with my 3g. I stopped by yesterday at att and they told me they only had 40 on launch day and have only gotten in 10 more since! I figures they would have gotten more seeing as they are the only store in sw Oklahoma that had them.

Got mine Monday 7/14 in SF after 1.5 hour wait. Whole process after the wait was very quick and easy, and I am officially in love with a gadget. Er, phone. Phone-gadget. Sigh.

bought mine on Thursday, I called up the Apple Store and they said they had them in stock. I got there around 11am and had to stand in a line. There were about 20 people ahead of me and was told the wait time would be 45 minutes which ended up being 2 and a half hours. There was a much longer line behind me, but the entire process was incredibly slow. I think the combination of new iphone users not knowing what plan to choose, combined with current AT&T users not being sure if they're eligible for the discounted price, all made it a real painful process.
When it got to my turn, it took about 5 minutes and I was done. Ideally, it should take about 5 to 10 minutes, but each person was taking like 20 minutes or longer.
I did get my phone so I was happy. I'm just hoping some of the bugs get worked out, as I'm experiencing little problems with the phone itself crashing at times and the reception sucking.

my original plan was to leave the house at 4:30am to get there by 5. My wife told me to swing by the AT&T store after finishing up at walmart. It just so happens at 6:30pm July 10, 4 people were ready in line. So I went home took a shower and ordered a pizza. 10:30pm I was sitting in a chair with approximately 12 other customers in front of me. 10 1/2 hours later and a call in sick to work, I had my iPhone 3G
Stood in line for about 2 1/2 hours day of release. #7 in line at an AT&T store. My fiance got a 8 gig and I got the white 16 gig. Since I have exchanged and now have a black 16 gig.

On July 14th my Husband and I made the trip to the Apple 24hr store in Manhattan on 5th and 59th. It was a epically annoying trek! I had on the wrong shoes, he had the wrong attitude. He didn't have the "I'm getting a new iPhone3G!! Yippie, Hurray!!! Yeah Boy!! Attitude. No, he had a, damn I don't wanna do this sh*$(% attitude and it showed all over his face. He thinks going through all this to get this phone is stupid, they should just send it to us. I told him we are not in Verizon anymore. Things are different in the real world. Now click your booted heels together, and chant, "I want an iPhone3G. I want an iPhone3G." Motivate yourself, cause this is the only way to get it.
We took the bus over and a cab from Bus Station. When we got there, there was a line and I had a feeling that we should have gotten on it, but no, we went right into the store. We were green. We had never been to this store and it is pretty nice, especially the way you get into the store. That huge glass cube is the actual "door" if you will. There is a glass elevator in the cube and a winding glass staircase that takes you down to the actual store. Once we made it down the stairs, we were overwhelmed by the sheer insanity of the thousands of army ants marching around looking to buy an iPhone3G. It was so crowded! Since I had the wrong sandals on, I started to feel it. I felt every stair under my sandals. Why oh why did I wear those?!?! I wore them to be cute and because I thought this would take only an hour or so. Well, was I wrong. Once thrust into the crowd I couldn't make heads or tails of where a line could be or if there was a line at all. Finally after wondering in the crowd for about fifteen minutes we got a genius who told us that the line was outside for the iPhone3G. Out we went, up those beautiful painful stairs again. Again, I could feel every step underfoot and this time the pain was a little brighter, a little more violent. Once we got upstairs and walked the two blocks to the end of the line, we found out it was closed for the day.
My Husband, now determined and hell bent on getting this dag on iPhone3G today announced we were going to the AT&T store to buy it. I didn't want to walk another step but I gimped my way up 59th or 58th or wherever the heck we were. I couldn't tell and didn't know because the pain blinded everything. Cute, the hell with Cute! I should have known better. Sneakers next time I kept telling myself. Sneakers!
He asked me if I could make it a few more blocks. I took a deep breath, smiled bravely and said yes I can. Yes I can. These steps were a little more vile and evil. I used to work in the city I should have know the streets love a broad in 4.25” heels making her way painfully. The street was an evil iPhone3G hating demon but I took it on and got to the AT&T store only to be told that we could order the phone with the Direct Fulfillment crap. I, riddled with pain, hot and partially blind from the stars that appeared with each step and adjustment of the sandals, grimiced at the sales guy and growled “No thanks!” My husband insisted that it could be a good idea and I flat out said in the store, while other people were contemplating and signing up for this DF bullsh**, “Why am I going to sign up to order a phone that the Apple store will have in stock tomorrow. That would be the stupidest thing anyone has ever done. We’re coming back tomorrow. We’ll get it then.”
We got a cab and went back to the bus terminal, got a bus and went home. Yes, all the while I had so much pain that I eventually became numb. It was kinda like when I got my Tattoos, sure, they hurt at first, but after a few minutes of the needles invading my flesh for the sake of art and attitude, I went numb and the artist could just do as he pleased with my flesh at that point. I felt nothing. I was seriously numb, if a toe fell off, I wouldn’t know it.
That Was Monday. I tell you, never again. Not like that. Nope.
So, Tuesday, July 15th, we woke up @ 4am took a 5:08 train to Penn Station, got a cab, got to the apple store at 5:55am and joined the small parade of people being ushered into the Apple store to buy their beloved iPhone3G’s.
This was much easier and much less painful than yesterday, in fact no pain at all. I had on sneakers, and my husband was actually happy. A genius who looked like Howard Stern, no really, he did save for the glasses and the age, ushered us down the stairs and in line, all the while he is reciting what we all need to buy this iPhone3G today. He was great.
We were like 30th or 40th in line or something and by the time we were next it was like 7:30am. The wait went quick while we played with iPhone3G’s that were set up and listened to the various speakers for the iPhone3G and iPod. There were no extra people in the store except for a clean up guy, a sprinkling of a few gunmen, as I like to call undercover bodyguards or iPhone3G guards and all of us happy iPhone3G purchasers. Yeah!!! All the geniuses were so pleasant and helpful and nice. Everything went smooth like the Visa check card commercials. I saw people buying accessories and not using cash, only plastic. Maybe they don’t take cash, I thought. It was like a fairy tale.
Gabriel, the person who helped us, was great. He had all the answers and all the patience in the world to deal with my husband’s questions. Poor Gabriel didn’t have an iPhone3G. He said he was waiting until his contract ran out on T-Mobile. I scoff at him, how could you be a genius and not have this awesome phone? Old Stevie isn’t giving anything out to his workers. They should at least have a different or special plan or consideration so they can have the phone too.
Ah, anyway, we paid for the phones and transferred our numbers. Gabriel let us open our own boxes and handle our own phones. He never once took them from us to do anything he just instructed us. We set up our e-mails and activated the phones and everything went smooth. We had our phone numbers transferred in what seemed like seconds. It was great! I was so happy and my husband was thrilled! It was a great iDay for us. I tell you that wasn’t bad at all. We left the store at 9:30am with our black 16gig iPhone3G’s and we were happy campers! WOW!
So that’s how we got our phones.

Got up Day 1 V2 iphone day July 11th went to att store 7am w/girlfriend to buy 2 white iphones. Store opens. Att employee lets in first 12 o so. We were 20th in line. So we high tailed it to Fashion Valley shopping mall apple store. arrived 9:45am.
