Love the new Iphone 3G ---- but just discovered that I cannot use my bluetooth headset to hear my visual voice mail. WTF
Took the phone to the local Apple Store and they tried to sync up several other new 3G phones with bluetooth/voice mail just in case my phone was the problem. No Luck !
With the new hands free laws in California, how am I suppose to retrieve my voice mails while driving.
Bye the way --- All bluetooth functions work fine when using the normal phone functions
Anyone else discover this yet ?
My version 1 phone works fine with Bluetooth/voice mail. What's up with version 2

whew! i thought this was just happening to me. not that i'm happy though. and i think it has something to do with v2.0. it used to work fine on my 1g iPhone until that was upgraded too from 1.1.5 to 2.0. in the upper right hand corner, i only have the button option for speaker where it used to say "audio options" or something similar to that.
someone please help...us!

Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way around this with the change to the firmware. The only other option I can think of is to find out your voicemail access number and then add it to your Favorites screen - the last time I had a phone where I had to dial in to my voicemail, it would automatically start playing my messages without the need to enter my password each time. This way, you can make a simple phone call with your bluetooth headset to get your messages, and use Visual Voicemail all other times...

I sure hope this gets corrected when we get an update. Visual voicemail is one of my favorite iPhone features in terms of convenience and the inability to have it functioning through the headset is pretty stupid. Legality aside (though still an important issue) who wants to bring a phone up to his/her ear while already wearing a headset?

Your avatar is disgusting. Reminds me of a sickly cancer patient with throat cancer.:foot:
Disgusting? Not to me,...actually those lips are quite mesmarizing and look like there begging to be kissed...the absence of the eyes only adds to the mystique. A very sensual avatar, in an Andy warhol sort of way.

Well, it IS called VISUAL voicemail. :laugh2:
If you HAVE to check your voicemail while driving, you can call your own number and check your voicemail the "normal" way. And I'm pretty sure that will go through your bluetooth headset.

Sort of defeats the whole "Visual Voicemail" thing in my eyes --
- Of course you can direct call your mail box. The convenience was the choice to select which caller you wanted to hear with the new system. For me, this is what makes it stand out from other carriers.
Just a gripe --- I only hope another firmware release will solve the problem

i wish i could say the same. i don't have the bt option for voicemail on the older iphone or my new 3g.. both on 2.0.
and i just noticed that the version of 2.0 isn't the same on both the iphones. the 2.0 version on my old iphone is (5A347). it is (5A345) on my 3g. is there a different version for the different models? if interested, you can find the info under settings>general>about>version.

This does seem to be a 2.0 software glitch. Again, my V1 worked fine up until the 2.0 update. 3G also came with the 2.0 software so one would believe this to be why the new phone won't support this either.
From what I have learned, the new firmware 5A347 as opposed to the older 5A345 may only address some Apps stability issues as well as some lag issues with the phone.

I'll weigh in: my voicemail works fine with all 3 audio options (1st gen iPhone, FW 2.0, Samsung earpiece).
I may be stating the obvious, but be 100% certain your devices are paired. Don't just check in Prefs either (the device may be listed as paired even if it functionally was dropped - if this is the case, turn BT off then on again). Check the BT icon at the top-right. Make a call just to be sure. If a device isn't paired, you won't be offered an Audio button to change where the output is going.

I have several BT headsets. I can tell you that on the BlueAnt Z9, no audio. On my new Jawbone2, I get the audio button and it works great. This may be a BT profile issue. HTH.

I agree with the, "If you HAVE to check your voicemail while driving"
I can understand if somebody calls you while you're on the road, but your voicemail can wait, no?

if they were able to leave you a voicemail, then you should have answered the call to begin with.

Sometimes you don't hear the phone ring. Sometimes you're on another call and don't want to interrupt it. There *are* reasons a person might miss a call and then want to listen to that ONE VM before calling back.

My 3G works just fine? I checked to confirm as I read this string of posts. Odd you guys / gals are experiencing this; you may want to notify Apple. I cannot state with 100% accuracy that it functioned in this fashion prior to jailbreaking but I'm pretty sure it did.

Hey, I understand needing to check a voicemail... But you don't need to use VISUAL voicemail while driving. That's what the headset law was meant to prevent.

You may have something here ---- are there others who can access voice mail with a bluetooth headset and what is the brand you use ?
I have an "LG" headset purchased from AT&T. They say it supports the i-phone and to a degree it is correct. I can pair and use the LG fine with all regular calls -------- just not "VVM" --- wonder why?

You know, I answered too soon before and hadn't even thought about this or tried it. :foot: I have a Jawbone too and when it's connected to my 3G, I do indeed get to select it as the audio output for visual voicemail...

I'm answering the phone by touching the headset, not the phone.
Can anyone else verify VM / bluetooth operation with any other headset than the "Jawbone 2" ?

oh, my question was directed at mattdez... to get the iphone's audio through your headset, you must answer the call through the headset. if you answer by touching the iphone, then it will default to the iphone's speakers.

I'm using my 2+ year old Sony Ericsson Bluetooth headset.
Not only does it work, but I can also check my visual voicemail and hear I'd through the headset. I press play on the screen and I hear it through Bluetooth.
If it's not working for you it must be your headset compatibility.

Just for grins....
I've two iPhones right now. V1 running 2.0, 3G running 2.0 (although it's a development handset and has some SDK components on it).
I've got 4 BT headset devices:
Jawbone 1
Jawbone 2
BlueAnt Z9
Older Plantronics 655
On both phones:
Jawbone 1, 2 work with VM
On v1/2.0 iPhone - Plantronics 655 won't pick up VM in the earpiece and my audio options button on VM screen only show speaker or iPhone. BlueAnt works fine.
On my 3G/2.0 iPhone - Plantronics 655 is ditto above...and BlueAnt as well. This leads me to believe that there's a bluetooth profile update in the 2.0 code somewhere. I do some BT dev work via the SDK (it's limited) and can't really compare it to 1.1.4 or earlier profiles, but the documentation does indicate there were updates to the BT specs on the new firmware.
I know for a fact that when I was running 1.1.4 on the v1, the Plantronics worked with VM.
Now one more data point.....
Sometimes, for no real reason at all, my Jawbone 2 (primary BT headset now) just drops the pairing with the iPhone. I simply have to re-pair and then it works again....but not with VM. In those cases (it's rare) I have to complete delete the pairing and do a brand-new pairing of the headset/phone as if virgin. Then it works again. Go figure.

Thanks for the informative info. I have just purchased a new "Jawbone 2" headset and indeed the VM works fine with the new headset. Funny thing is that when I went to the Genius Bar at the local Apple store they were perplexed at the problem and had no answers as to why Bluetooth / VM would not work.
This is why I find these forums so useful. This community has taught me boatloads as well as entertained me for quite some time now.
Why some Bluetooth headsets work on "phone" and not on "VM" are strange to me. This is why I was so "miffed" (most people won't suspect if it works for 1 part of the phone, why not all functions)
Thanks again for all the straight talk on the subject. Maybe firmware updates to either 2.0 or the individual Bluetooth device makers will restore the operation on Voice Mail in time.

No one has mentioned Apple's earpiece. Apple's one headset doesn't pair up for VVM. Works for everything else, but not VVM. WTH is that about?

This visual voicemail thing really bugs me.
My plantronics discovery 925 paired up easily and worked with vvm; but after the 2.01 bug fix update the "audio" button in the upper right corner of the vvm screen changed to "speaker" and no more listening on my headset.
Amidst all the dropped calls and mobileme maxmessup, I tried restoring my phone and, voila!, the button changed back to "audio" ... except two sessions later the dreaded "speaker" button returned and has not since relinquished its position.
WTF is right: I hoped last night's update would fix this bug in Apple's own inimitable way, but no luck; I believe that the software is plagued by a gunk issue that slowly deteriorates the iPhones functionality and we are all doomed to "restore/update hell" for the rest of our lives, or, until our contract runs out.
I don't know yet why this is so important to me, except that the world seems a friendlier place when my headset and handset live in harmony.
I know, I need more than a bug fix.

I'm having the same problem. Thought I was doing something wrong. I am using a AX2 Bluespoon (older device), but also tried with my Jeep's built-in BT. No dice either way.
So, in Cali, I will just have to call my own # for now. Keep on letting Apple know and maybe we will get some sets added in a future update.
Oh, IMHO it can sometimes be safer to use the visual voicemail rather than dial and hit the different buttons you need to save, delete, replay, etc. We all have different needs that we shouldn't have to explain why to each other.

Restored my 3g to factory "new" condition with 2.02 and VVM is working again; this confirms my suspicion that the pairing of some devices is corrupting the bluetooth configuration, else restoring the ROM wouldn't have fixed the problem.
Either Apple has a non-standard implementation of Bluetooth or this is just simply a bug that presents itself when pairing (with certain devices or in certain conditions). In either case, restoring my phone to its "new iphone" state solved the problem for me.
------------------------------------
Mine was working fine with my Motorola H500. I just bought the brand spanking new Jabra BT530 and VVM wouldn't work through it no matter what I tried. So, I unpaired it and repaired the Motorola and, as luck would have it, VVM doesn't work with the Motorola anymore either!
If I can't get it fixed in the next week, the iPhone 3g goes back (I've only had it 3 weeks; Cali gives us a month).

My wife has the same headset (925), and doing a clean restore to factory fresh seems to work with ROM version 2.1. Worked with my Plantronics 665a as well. Your mileage may vary, however.
