According to the iPhone 3G User Guide, I can turn off the feature that when I receive an SMS message, that message won't display on top of everything else. I just want it to make a sound and vibrate, but not show the message.
However, when I turn this preview off, it doesn't seem to work. All SMS messages still pop-up on my screen.
Here's an excerpt from the user guide:
SMS Preview
By default, iPhone displays a preview of new text messages when iPhone is locked or you are using another application. You can turn this preview on or off in Settings.
Turn SMS Preview on or off: In Settings, choose General > Passcode Lock and tap Show SMS Preview.
Has anyone gotten this to work for them? If so, what am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance!

I'd rather just have it chime/vibrate and not show anything, other than the number of messages on the SMS icon.

doesn't work for me either, cause i believe it only works when you actually use the passcode lock.
I don't want to use the passcode lock so can't set it up.

If you put the passcode lock on your phone and turn the text preview off, you will not get the preview WHILE THE PHONE IS LOCKED, but if you (or someone else) is actively using the phone, the message still pops right up WITH THE TEXT PREVIEW. At least that's the result I'm having.

Me too and I find this really, really annoying. If anyone else is using your phone they can read the message. This really sucks. Anyone think a future update will correct this? Or is it just wishful thinking on my part?

I am a user that doesn't like this feature. I currently have a lock set on my phone with text preview off so the only thing that pops up is the persons name with "Text Message" under it. I wish they would include an option to turn it off completely. At my current job, I'm put in a situation where I have to leave my phone in a room where basically anyone can access it and I like to keep my phone to myself...The lock does take care of the snoopers though.

Also bigcix, it's as everyone has been saying. If your phone is unlocked it will still display the text message contents in the pop up message. The text message preview is only hidden when the phone is locked.

People have been complaining about this since the first iphone came out. The only way to do this is to jailbreak the phone and download an app called kate. This app lets you change fonts on the phone, set up a missed call/text mesage tone and lets you turn off the text preview completely. I had mine set so that when I would receive a text message, nothing would happen, but a little red "1" would show up on the SMS icon. This app does a lot of cool things, but unfortunatly it is in installer and installer is not released yet. This app also does cost 20 bucks for 6 months, but they give you a trial period of 10 days.
