that mist be am issue with AT&T around you. I have gotten failed calls but not nearly as many as you. I'd say 2 or 3 since I got the 3G. You should try calling AT&T with your problem since I don't think it is an issue of the phone itself.

I agree. Give ATT a call or better yet visit on of the stores and they can usually fix it right on the spot.

i had this problem I think yesterday. It's never happened before and I'm using the V1 iphone with 2.0 software.
Certain phone numbers I'd try calling 20 times and it would keep beeping and saying call failed without even ringing and I'd have several bars of service. But if I hung up and tried a different number it would work fine. I thought at first there was just a problem with that number I had been dialing but later in the day same thing with a different number...refused to work but all other numbers I tried worked fine.

i'm glad i'm not the only one. and i'm not on 2.0 yet by the way. i tried calling two friends that were both from the same town down state and failed seriously 50 times. called a friend in my town, straight through. called the other friends again. failed. so maybe it was because of their town? :S

I've had dropped calls, too. Can it just be that there are so many new iPhone users/at&t customers that their system is overloaded? I had problems with dropped calls all the time when we were on Verizon, but once we made the switch to Cingular all was fine.. no matter which phone I had.

it isn't dropped calls, the calls aren't even dialing or going through at all. And it's only certain random numbers that seemed to be having issues Number A won't work if you call it 30 times, call number B and it works fine, try calling number A again rigt afterwards and it still doesn't work.

My reception has been terrible since getting the 3g phone, always sits around 2 bars rarely3-4, and drops calls randomly. I came from a v1 phone with 1.1.2 software that I never upgraded because of was so snappy , I didn't want to deal with headaches and well now here I am :/

the 3G having few bars is not the same issue we are addressing here.
3G and edge/voice are 2 different signals. If the iphone is recieving any 3G at all then it displays the 3G signal strength and not the edge/voice.
So you may be picking up 5 bars of edge/voice but 1 bar of 3G and it's going to show 1 bar.
You technically aren't getting worse reception, 3G coverage just isn't as good as 2G

This best explains what I am experiencing after updating to 2.0 on my v1 iPhone. I never could call a certain number on iPhone, but it dialed with no problem with Verizon.

I never experienced many dropped calls with my original iphone and in the two days I've had the 3G iphone, I've had like 4 dropped calls. I'm hoping it's something AT&T will fix because on their 3G coverage map of my area, mostly everything is dark orange which is suppose to mean the best 3G coverage possible but I'm only seeing less than 2 bars.
Sucks because you get clearer conversations on 3G, but your calls can get dropped which is annoying and what I've done is turned 3G off and just talked using Edge to make sure it didn't drop the call.
But what's the point of 3G, if AT&T is not coming through with the coverage.
I also had the original Blackjack at one point over a year ago and that was 3G and never experienced dropped calls.
I'm assuming they might be working on their system which is why a lot of us are experiencing bad signals, dropped calls, call failed, etc. I've had a couple call failed too.
You have to believe it's either the software/hardware inside the phone or AT&T itself is not ready to handle the demand.
If I'm supposedly in the excellent coverage area, I'd hate to see what some of you guys are dealing with in the just "good" areas which are lighter orange.

I've had many failed calls (with full bars, or 2-5 bars) before 3G, so I think it's an ATT thing. I have failed calls now as well, so nothing's changed.

I never have dropped calls, just calls that never make it in the first place, i.e. failed calls with 2-5 bars.

I've had my original 3G replace after one week of of weak signal, signal going from no bars to 5 bars, dropped calls, calls not going through... The new one has the same issue. Callers say my phone goes right to voice mail when they call... I had three failed calls today and two dropped. All these calls were placed in what ATT claims to be excellent signal areas... My 1st gen did not have nearly as many problems. In addition, I have had about a dozen or so crash reports sent to Apple by iTunes... Why does a new phone crash so much in just one week and have so many issues just placing a simple call. This is basic stuff by now! At this point... I love the phone but hate the problems... I can't afford to have poor call service! I might be returning mine if things don't improve soon.

I actually just made a post about this issue, well for me it seems that any number starting with (937) 902-xxxx in Ohio fails right away. Yet I'm able to take the SIM card out and works fine on another phone.
The friend on the other end (who I can't call) is able to call me just fine, text them fine, just can't dial any number starting with those 6 numbers. I've tried calling other local business around her to see that that worked with the area code....works fine.
any thoughts?

IIRC, Blue is the color that indicates 3G coverage on the AT&T maps.

that's what I was getting at. Two of my friends have the same first 6 digits in a different town and it fails every time. And again. I'm on a V1 and havent updated to 2.0 yet so its not just 3G and 2.0

Interesting hmm, but essentially I am getting bad reception/service if my phone is relying on the weak 3g signal?

I just tried turning off 3G and I went from one bar to three bars of service. If I'm paying for 3G service and ATT's service map indicates that I'm in an excellent 3G area, Cleveland is almost all 3G service where I'm at, then why subscribe to 3G? Half the time you can't even get a decent signal. I have friends that have 3G on other ATT phones that get a great signal where my iPhones delivers only one bar. So is it ATT's problem or Apple's?

Mines not an issue of coverage... i was on the phone with apple and at&t neither of which can figure out a solution. Weird thing was that I put my SIM in another phone right here and dialed just fine, so doesn't sound like a service issue

I had the same thing, ATT claims that the network is good, no problems... and Apple claims that the phone is performing according to specs. I would think that this type of problem would show up during quality control testing.

Since then i have no issues so far. You should really try this, i was really frustrated when it happened. Hope this helps.

any thoughts?Dude, I'm in the 937 area code as well! I don't have trouble with dropped calls as much as I have trouble with the calls going thru in the first place. I can have 2 to 5 bars and the call will fail. I have to try over and over to get it to complete. I'm call ATT in a few to see wtf.

Just some info to help everyone out... I still have one of the first Iphones and ALWAYS get a "Call Failed" If the number im dialing is Busy (I never get a busy signal when a line is busy, just Call Failed). But what may be happening is that There may be or was a routing path down. Sometimes they contract out for backbone carriers in a certain area because AT&T may not have something in that area. And Some of these Backbone LD carriers suck.. Usually get echoing from bad frame framerates, low bandwidth, misdirected calls, etc.. Used to work for a Cellular company and always had to track garbage like this to get it fixed..
Hope its all working for everyone now, if not deffinately report it to AT&T so they can fix the routing or reroute.

The majority of the time I have to turn 3G off. I just can't get a reliable signal on 3G. 3G and GPS were the two main reasons for "up-grading" to the the 3G phone... Most of the time 3G doesn't work... Maybe I'll have to keep track and prorate my monthly bills to reflect the fact that AT&T can't provide 3G even in strong 3G areas. It's pretty bad when a friend with a berry on Verizon is already viewing a web page while I'm still trying to get the page to load... This sucks...

Classic AT&T. I was a Verizon customer for 10 years. Bought an Iphone 3 months ago and switched to AT&T. I 've had so many dropped calls I've lost count. I am 5 minutes from Philly and get dropped calls OUTSIDE in my yard. My new 3G seems to be even worse. In my house I get 0 bars and can't make calls, friend with a $19.95 tracphone has 5 bars. AT&T sucks...but we all knew that!

I had far worse coverage and customer service when I was with Verizon. I've said it before and I'll say it again... totally depends on where you live. I really don't believe any cell carrier is better than another in the big picture. Perception is a function of personal experience. Does AT&T suck? Sure, sometimes. Do the other carriers suck just as much? Ask the right people and I'm sure you'll find they do.

The hospital I work for just tried to call me and their call went right to voice mail. My phone was right beside me and didn't even ring. If I hadn't heard the little chime for a voice mail I wouldn't have known they'd called. I'm on call and have to be able to be in phone contact. This issue has to be resolved or I'm going to have to drop AT&T and Apple before I get fired for not responding.

I went to AT&T today. They replaced my SIM card for the third time. The Tech/Rep had his Motorola Q on the desk... He was getting full 5 bars of service, while my iPhone 3G was getting only 1. I asked him about this and he said he had no idea what might be causing this problem. I asked if their iPhones in the store had this problem? He told me no they were all at 5 bars of service. When we looked at their iPhones they only had 2-3 bars of service and it kept going from 1 bar to 4 bars and back. I picked up one and the bars dropped to 1. He told me that was because I was holding the phone by the bottom of the back... I said does your Motorola drop service when you hold it. He said sure... We tried it over and over and it did NOT drop any bars of service, it held steady at 5 bars. He said I work for the "company" I can't really comment. He suggested that I go to Apple and pick up new phone... I said why, everyone on display keeps fluctuating the same way... He had no comment. I think is an Apple hardware issue and not ATT.... I don't know about everyone else but I need my calls to ring through...

I drop calls even with my V1. And many times, my friends make fun of me saying that they called and it went straight to voice mail. Phone right next to me, I get the signal for voice mail, but it never rings. I also carry a Verizon Blackberry from work, and they call me on that to prove that Att/Apple suck. Blackberry always goes through and never drops a call. I hope they fix these issues, my patience with this will run out soon.

No dropped calls yet in the two weeks I've had it.
Same here. 0 dropped calls and 0 calls failed since 8 AM on July 11th when I picked up my iPhone 3G.
To the guy above me: I had people call me when I was on Verizon and leave messages all while my phone never did ring. I'd just be sitting there and all of a sudden have a new voicemail. Don't go thinking Verizon is perfect.
I've had 2 dropped calls while connected to 3G while in my apartment. Now, my apartment usually sucks with signal in general, but I normally ALWAYS turn 3G OFF if I am home (no point since i have wifi on).
Those dropped calls were back to back. None before or since. 3G signal is STRONG outside of my apartment complex. Never have an issue with calls generally.

First try this, I was astonished to find the iPhone is set to Cupertino (the center of the universe according to Jobs apparently) and does not automatically reset to your area code, my time was right but I could not call out until I did the following. Why didn't they set this at the Apple store? I will not hesitate to have AT&T delete and re-add if i have any more problems.
1) Go to Settings > General > Date and Time. Switch off “Set Automatically” and manually select your hometown (the default is Cupertino). If you dont change it, you will not be able to make outgoing calls. But the wierd part is, you will still be able to receive incoming calls. Once done, manually set the date and time, and restart your iPhone. If you want, you can reset the 2 settings to “Set Automatically” again.
2) Next, go to Settings > Phone > Show My Caller ID > Switch this to “ON”. Usually with these steps, things should be okay already. If not, you have to turn off “Call Forwarding” and “Call Waiting” as well.
