If by portable you mean on that does not need to be plugged in, go to
www.richardsolo.com (http://www.richardsolo.com). $49.00, works great.

it would be nice to have one for emergencies. I could have used one on my vacation last week.

$49 is a rip off. Search this forum and you'll find a better deal.

I use the Tekkeon MP1550. I already had this for another device before I got my 3G. Uses 4 AA batteries (I use rechargeable batteries). has a USB out jack so you just use the Iphone's usb cable to connect to the phone. Works perfectly with the 3G. I've seen it recently for $21.99

I haven't had the need to use it to determine how much extra battery life it gives yet.

Mophie.com!

Once the new one comes out for the 3G, I will have it!

Mophile seems like it is the best one to me. I could be wrong.

I don't have this, but I saw them at an AT&T store.
