can somebody tell me exactly why certain apps close back to the home screen? Is it memory ? Thanks.

There seems to be some general instability in the iPhone 2.0 os right now - I'm not sure how much of it is the OS itself, and how much of it is from bugs in the new applications. From my own experience with trying different apps, and testing my own programs while debugging them , I've noticed that some of the instability isn't localized to the program with the problem (note to self, next time, don't use my personal phone to debug apps...).
Running out of memory will shut down the program, but so will invalid memory accesses (aka bugs in the program :)), and of course, things just seem slightly unstable on the cutting edge of iPhone software. Unless the application is something really intensive memory wise, my guess is that its not shutting down due to running out of memory though.
Thats not a very helpful answer I know... if it gets really bad, I would try turning the phone off and back on and see if that helps restore some stability.

i've experienced the same sort of things, i've been on safari just looking at things and the next minute i'm back on the home screen, and when i go back in again its has to load up again!
no doubt there will be a 2.1 update in the next couple of weeks that'll hopefully get things sorted, also there will probably be updates in the app store!
all we can do i wait and find out!

Yes! My biggest problem has been Safari also ;) I guess I should be thankful that my Safari crashing every 2 minutes last night caused me to get off the phone and go to bed... but I am eagerly waiting for the update :)
