The 3G iPhone has a built in software that allows AT&T to send a comand to the phone scrambling it, turning it into a brick....if its stolen or a customer cancels the contract they demand that either you return the phone or they send the brick signal and charge you full price.....and even if you leave it turned off your not safe...the iPhone never actually powers completly off......oh the irony....LOL

once you pull your sim they can't find you
i could see them stopping from putting it back in there system .. but thats it
on a blackberry they just black list the pin so no data use .

I think you misunderstand the software. Neither ATT nor APPLE have the right/ability to "brick" a phone if a customer cancels a contract. That would be illegal. The customer would be responsible for a fee (called the "Early Termination Fee") and possible a charge for the hardware, since the price was subsidized.
Now, there is software on the phone that would allow corporations to BLANK a phone's info if it were lost or stolen, but not brick it. The data and security is generally worth far more than the hardware.

And of course AT&T and/or it's employees would NEVER engage in rumour-mongering or disinformation, now....would they?
<sigh>

Sorry, but I have been on, and moderated forums long enough to know that when most people come on and out of the clear blue and make some wild announcement, it's generally false.
Again, there is software on the phone that will wipe it clean as far as data on it ( in fact, I believe that has become a corporate requirement now) if the phone falls into the wrong hands, but AT&T cannot Brick an iPhone and render it completely useless. The legal ramifications alone would be huge.
You also stated that this "function" was to be used against anyone who broke their contract. Again, besides being the worst business tactic I have ever heard, it also completely illegal.

I also heard that if you cancel your auto insurance, an agent sneaks into your garage at night and pours sugar in the gas tank.
