Does the 3G fir in the iphone V1 dock?

No it does not. You need a 3G dock. They can be found at the Apple Store or website.

I thoguht the dock was universal (in a matter of speaking).

I have an old dock I bought for my iPods. It fits alright in there (took out the plastic mold that was made for my iPod). Nor problems, and it charges without any worry.

It also plays my music into my stereo as well.

Yes, it was. It has holes in the bottom so you can hear your speaker when docked.

Apple is selling a set of 3 plastic inserts for the 3G phone for use in the universal docks. $9.00 US.

The 3G will fit into the 2G dock if you force it - but I don't recommend it. Many of the docks from third party products are universal, but the 2G dock is NOT.
