i really see no need for me to upgrade to iPhone 3G...i have been trying to convince my self to change my $30 plan with rogers to the $75 and also pay another $199 upfront, but i see no need to doing that. I don't really surf the web on EDGE anyway and wont be if i had 3G. I have my macbook for that plus im fine with the GPS on my iPhone. It works surprisingly well for me, wherever i go, even in downtown roads which recently got WiFi.

I was walking in my neighbourhood the other day and i picked up WiFi from nearby houses and decided to try the GPS and it was so damn accurate, so i took a screeny:

the pin, which is dropped in the center of the circle is about 10ft/3m away from where i actually was. im surprised at how accurate this thing is, even though its not a real GPS ( it locates you through cell tower and wifi )

The results were consistant and evertime i press the locateme button its the same thing. im happy with my 1g iphone.

It's great that you're happy with your 1st generation iPhone! It is a great device.

Technically, though, the first generation iPhone does NOT have GPS - it locates you through cell tower (and wifi, when available) triangulation (http://ipod.about.com/od/iphonewidgets/f/iph_triangulate.htm).

oh yes i know that its not a real GPS (uses cell towers and wifispots) thats why im surprised at its accuracy. :laugh2:

My iPhone has always located me at least a mile from where I currently am.

Has anyone tried pairing a BT gps unit with a 2.0 V1 iphone yet? I highly doubt they would have snuck that by without saying anything... but you never know.

Anyone have one? I do, but I'm not 2.0 yet...

My iPhone has always located me at least a mile from where I currently am.

that happens to me when i use locate me or navizon. but google maps is always dead on for me, i don't know why. even my friend's iphone doesn't do that? when i went to flordia for it worked just as good with Tmobile.

I always use Google Maps as well (not jailbroken) and even in Boston, it was off. Maybe it differs by the phone. Either way, I'll have GPS soon, and it's excellent that your location is spot on.

I was thinking someone was going to ask if it was possible to add GPS hardware to the 1st iPhone. :tounge:

Lol. I meant like actually inside the phone...not like an addon that you can plug in and out.

My 2G iPhone more often than not got me down to within half a block, and sometimes located me as accurately as a GPS. Other times, it was a large circle, but I was always inside it.
