hey guys,
is it true 3rd party apps still run in the background after you hit the home screen button? If so, how do you turn it off so they indeed are off and not running int he background killing battery life???

No, nothing will run in the background except sending a mail or text. Apple has specified this as necessary for the battery life of the phone.

You can "force quit" a program that is not responding by pressing the home button for 6 seconds until it returns to your home screen.
