Why cant I sync?

For some reason or another, when I connect my phone to my PC it will not show up. I check that all my USB's are current and downloaded the latest version on Itunes, my phone is currently running version 1.1.4 but it wont even recognize the camera or anything. I have a brand new cable (apple) which I thought might be the problem before but still have the same results. Here is the error message I get when running a test

properly.
No FireWire (IEEE 1394) Host Controller found.
Most Recent Device Not Currently Connected:
iPod nano (3rd Generation) running firmware version 1.1.2
Serial Number: 6U81708PYXX
iPhone running firmware version 1.1.4
Serial Number: 7S737V5QWH8
**** iPhone/iPod Touch Sync Tests ****
No iPhone or iPod found.

As you can see, it recognizes my nano but not my phone. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Just a guess but you're using firewire and not USB.
