Sorry for those of you who think this is just random product placement....well I guess it is sort of haha. Anyways I stopped off at a local Radio Shack earlier today and saw this product called the iGo powerXtender and got it. Its a little battery powered charger that has different tips for different products. I got the adapter tip for the iphone v1 (still works with 3G), and it came with two AA batteries.
Before I picked it up my battery level on the phone was less than 10%. I hooked up the iGo, and it charged me back up to 100%. And not only that, but I've been testing it out and switched on all unnessecary background programs such as GPS and 3G and wifi, and have been using the internet very very heavily, and have watched TWO movies (Dumb and Dumber and Walk Hard if you care), and the phone is STILL at 100%.
This is the perfect add on for any travelers! Im going to Hawaii next week and this is freakin awesome.
Just thought I'd share :)

It sounds pretty good. Does it add a lot of bulk or anything to the phone?

Well, yes and no. The charger and the tip combined are about the length of the phone itself, but it doesnt get in the way. So far the only drawback I really can think of that bothers me is that when the charger and tip are connected to the phone, it feels a little flimsy, but not terribly.

Cool! You've been using this with your v1 iphone with no problems? How long have you been using it?

How long did it take to charge back to 100% when you were down to 10%?

a little bit longer than what it would have been if I plugged it into the wall or computer.

I'll take the risk. It was only 5 bucks. They sell for $20 at radio shack.

i agree. While the retail price for the powerXtender + the iPhone tip is just over $30, I still think it beats the one that showguy recommends. That one is a rechargeable Lithiom Ion, just like the iPhones battery itself. so, if youre on a long flight and the battery on that AND the iphone are drained, than youre screwed. With the iGo, just pop in two new AA's and you're set for another full charge and a half.
Pro of the iGO: Limitless wireless charging capabilities
Con: Have to carry around a handfull of AA's, and its kind of bulky
Pro of the Smart Backup Battery: Small, lightweight
Con: Once its dead, its you're f**ked unless you have another one
I guess one mans achelies heel is another mans golden spoon.
