turn your brightness down and turn off auto brightness. Shut off bluetooth and shut off 3g. Manually push your email. Ill see if i can think of others.

i dont get what people are doing. i leave everything on, keep the brightness at about 40% and i get plenty of juice out of my battery. it lasts a full day and i get the 20% warning an hour before bed usually.
i always get 5+ hrs of usage a day at least.

sunday was my first day of usuage and it was sorta bad, however everyone was using it for this and that looking at it and the brightness was like at 70%. i didnt get a 20% battery remaining. today i turned my brightness down to about 30-40 and man i got the battery like i got with my old phone and the brightness at 40 is damn good, better than v1. i got about 5 hrs and like 10+ standby before i got 20% batery warning

I really do like my 3G but this article is basically describing how to turn your phone off. What good is a device when you have to turn all the "features" of the device off just so you can make your battery last a reasonable length of time?(Just playing the devils advocate here).
It makes me wonder if a class-action suit is in the future for a device released that is grossly underpowered. A revamping of this battery is in order.
I can also see that a external battery pack would solve the issue but how impractical would it be to have to have your phone tethered to another device all the time. Having the technology to create such a device in the first place would indicate that creating a battery with sufficient power would be a simple thing.
To me, it's like having an Xbox360 that I can only play for 30 minutes before I get kicked offline. It really makes no sense. "Here, check out my cool phone, oh yeah, I have everything turned off including my phone so I can show you how it works". Am I the only one who thinks this is silly?

LMAO. Good luck getting that class certified. You bought the iphone, and now you are complaining because you can't text, surf, talk, have aim on, and fetch emails all at the same time for five hours straight? Give me a break.

Five hours? That's the minimum I would expect. I would expect actually two days on a charge. That said, I wasn't saying I would initiate a class-action suit, I was merely speculating that with all the complaints, it would be possible.
Secondly, I don't surf, I rarely, if ever text, I've only made two calls on it since it was released, I don't have AIM on and I have Fetch set to manual. That said, the battery is inefficient. I am not complaining. I still think it's the greatest device made. I just found it humorous that the recommended settings were to turn off everything the phone is made to do.(Including turning on Airplane mode so you can't get calls). Don't you see the humor in that?

I completely agree here. The only things I've done to save battery so far are turning off wi-fi when I know I'm not near one, and turning the brightness down to about 30%. I still have GPS on all the time, along with auto-fetch, 3G, etc. After being at work all day yesterday, using the iPod feature, making three calls, sending several e-mails, etc., I got home with 50% battery remaining.
You certainly don't have to turn off the features of this phone to make the battery last all day. No one should be complaining about frequent chargings, either -- this is exactly what you should do with a lithium ion battery, anyway!

Folks, the biggest hit comes from push email and bluetooth. If you have both of these enabled, your battery life is going to be pretty short.
I've been using my V1 phone since iDay and have historically had great battery life. I watch 1.5 hours of video on my train ride in to work, check email, chat on the phone, etc. and it would just barely put a dent in my battery. I didn't use bluetooth.
Now, I've installed firmware 2.0 and enabled bluetooth and now my battery life has shortened a lot. With firmware 2.0 I now have push on my Mobile Me and Exchange accounts, and now that talking on the phone in the car is illegal in my state since July 1st without a headset, I've enabled bluetooth. This has roughly doubled my battery consumption.

Many smartphones have battery problems. First people complain about not enough features and now people are complaining about battery life. Its the new features that everybody pined for that are draining the battery. I am very happy with my battery life on this phone. It is much better than the Sprint Mogul I just sold. I have no use for Bluetooth so I turn it off, I keep wifi off unless I am sitting down and browsing the internet or downloading an app. I do not live in a 3G area so I turn it off when I go home and have it on at work. It is not a lot of trouble to switch these things on/off. I used my phone for 5 hrs yesterday and still had half a battery left. I challenge you to find a phone with the capabilities of an iphone 3G that will give you better battery life.

How about the fact that the battery life Apple advertised was achieved in their labs by turning off all of the great new features.
Yet they advertised those great new features at the same time that they advertised the battery life that was achieved with those features deactivated.
Bill of goods is what they sold.
Apple is a major corp. like any other and will do what it can get away with for the bottom line.

I was talking about 5 hours of hard core use. with about 15 hours of standby time. The battery on my windows mobile device would have been dead long before
I do agree it sucks to turn these features off, but it is just the reality of the smartphone market. I will tell you the biggest drain on a battery is having weak signal. I recently moved to an area where I had weak signal thru Sprint and I had to charge my smartphone 2-3 times a day. This is with wifi, bluetooth off. I did have push email, but it was real annoying. So only having to rechargewhen I go to bed at night is soooooooooo much better

Has a device ever been released where someone didn't scream class action suit? Here's a tip. If it doesn't meet your expectations, take it back for a refund and find something else. As of to date you are within the return policy time frame so do yourself and the rest of us a favor and return it.

Exactly. No lawsuit will succeed in this arena. Class action lawsuits are not easy to get certified, and would be easily handled with a motion to dismiss by Apple before it even sees the light of day.
Do us all a favor, quit whining, take back your iphone, and let people who have been waiting for days to have this "weak battery life" iphone.
Oh yeah, and just to let you know, apple is a publicly traded company who has an obligation to make money for its shareholders. It is not obligated to satisfy forum users who want to use an iphone for 10 hours straight while performing multiple processes at once.

I don't mind tending to my phone a bit, but the controls that give you the best battery life are somewhat deep in the Settings applet. What I'd like are buttons on the Home screen that immediately turn on and off 3G, Wifi, and Blutooth. If we had that, I could get 3 days of use per charge without having to be an iPhone attendant. There could also be automatic monitors that turn on 3G when you load Safari, and turn it off when you close it, automatically. If someone else doesn't do this, I shall look into creating an App that adds this functionality. For now, I just have lots of charges. One at work, one in car and one at home. You get into the discipline of plugging it in whenever you get the chance. All 3G phones are like this, so I'm already in the habit.
