What's the point? When do you use this? I know that when I go to take a picture it asks me if I want to be located but what is the use? When can you see a pic and where it was taken?

well, think about it... when you are on a holiday.. you take a photo right.. it lavels the location of where you took the picture..
Not really necessary, but for old people (not me), they may forget where the picture was taken and then they can check...

Good question. I was wondering the same thing. I have no idea how to see where the picture was takin. But it seems like a cool feature if I can figure out how to use it.

The information is written to the metadata of the picture's file. The same way that you change metadata on MP3's. So say for instance if you upload the picture to Flickr, it can automatically read the geotag information and have that information displayed on mapped onto a map for you.

Thanks, that was my question because there is no way to see where the picture was taken right on the phone but that makes sense. :laugh2:
There are some professions that use geotagging for various purposes. I am a member of a Civil Air Patrol ground recon team, and after a disaster, we take photos of damaged infrastructure (a bridge, say) and upload a geotagged image to the State EOC where they plot all of the reports on a map. Helps them assess where to send what resources.

OK. Here's the thing. There are applications out there that take your pictures and associate them with an "area". When I travel to your "area", I have an application (on my iPhone called "NearPics") that will show me pictures of whatever area I'm in. So... if you take a really cool picture, and I'm in your area I'll know if there are any cool sights I'm interested in...

Here's another great example of of geotagging at work.
I went street hiking, like I normally do on Saturdays, and this time I used my iPhone 3G to document generally where I've been and some interesting things to look at.
Here's my link to Flickr of today's set of pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jarofclay73/sets/72157606135313843
You can click on a map to see where each picture was taken. And if you click on a particular picture, it's even tagged with the current weather conditions.
This would be SO cool when you're on a trip. I went to Portland back in May and I had to manually geotag each picture and that was such a pain.
Right now, the program I am using to take the pictures is "AirMe." It's free and it automatically uploads each picture to my Flickr account. Each picture takes a bit of a time to get geotagged and uploaded. But, it works like a charm.
