Good question! It's gotta look clear right? Somebody let us know. It's not all pixelated like how it is over EDGE is it?

Are you kidding me? You're joking right? Can we get some more feedback from other people please? This would be a deal breaker for me.

I wanted to get Orb live TV to stream over 3G once it got jailbroken so I can watch a clear picture. This changes everything now. I don't know if I want the 3G now.

this is a deal breaker. More expensive without text messages. Crappier Battery life. Crappier Screen, and crappy gps that doesnt do voice turn by turn, and kills battery, Crappy 3g that only does 2x speed of edge and has crappy quality youtube videos.

navteq has a turn by turn GPS coming for iPhone 3g. I find the youtube quality to be somewhere in the middle of EDGE and WiFi, which is right where it should be. Battery is lesser than the EDGE version, but 3g is a battery drain, we all knew this coming in. so far I'm pretty impressed with it, although it is a mixed bag right now due to the fact I had to wait 10 hours for it.

OK so why would it download fast but the quality is still not like wifi? I mean, the 3g speeds are close to wifi right? Then the quality of the picture should stream close to the quality over wifi. What gives here?

i hear yeah i have had some issues but i am still impressed and liking it but i dunno, only time will tell. i know it took me 3 days before i loved my iphone v1, up until then i was pretty unsure and had buyers remorse. now its like man, one of the best items i bought in 2007

You are at fault ... 3G speeds are quite less than to the wifi speeds.... (I tested this on iphonespeedtest.com It differs by 200-500 kpbs )
and regarding the youtube.. I guess it has something to with youtube.com server or att server I guess... I might be wrong but I am guessing as lets say when you start downloading over edge or 3g network att server categorise your device as the phone and send you the more blured video(I am not sure how this works but i guess this is the case) and when you download from wifi... youtube sends you the best quality of that particular video....

Correct me if I am wrong... I am just guessing at what could be the reason..
As it doesnt make sense of having 3G speeds... and downloading faster when you cant even get the best quality videos... I would even wait for a minute to start the download if I get the good quality...

Any tech specialists know the answer to this? Why would it just download faster over 3g but the quality of the stream isn't much of an improvement compared to EDGE?

Nothing you said in this whole statement is true. It is less expensive. It does not have a crappier battery life, the battery drains more with 3G on but less when using Edge so the battery life is better then v1. The GPS, in my experience, is FANTASTIC. I have not had a single issue with it. That is asking a lot to have voice turn by turn, but you will get it with TeleNav soon. 3G is not 2X faster then Edge it is 4-5 times faster. The crappy quality youtube videos are not apples fault. That is YouTube, their videos are very low quality.

So when I jailbreak the 3g and get Orb live TV running on it, my picture will be crystal clear? Over wi-fi, it's HD quality.

This has nothing to do with speeds. This has to do with who is hosting the video. Go on youtube right now and watch a video, the quality is absolutely horrible. If Orb has good quality movies, the iPhone will be able to display it accordingly. For example, your watching a movie that is 1980 X 1080(which is called full HD), whenever you downscale to a smaller screen the picture is as good if not better. So going to a 480 X 320 screen, yes your HD movies will look fantastic. Go take a picture on your digital camera and send it to your iPhone via e-mail and tell me how that looks. That will give you your answer even more.

I am not tech specialist, but I think iphone-v2 has the right idea. The servers that host the videos don't have an infinite number of versions with varying quality of each video posted to send to your phone depending on the speed of your connection.. I assume they have the regular version and the EDGE version. It would make sense that right now it is downloading the EDGE version of the video, which is crappy looking but also a smaller file. That explains the fast download via 3G, but crappy quality of the video. Maybe if Apple and Google rewrite the commands from their servers we can get the wifi version of the video sent to us when it recognizes the 3G connection.

I got the V1 iphone since day one, The dateaplan is 10 dollars more without text, So I'll be paying atleast 5 dollars more for text. That makes it more expensive for me. Whats the point of Having 3g if I'm going to have it off. I don't want to pay much more for the 3g if I'm not going to use it. My V1 Screen is crystal clear, I heard/seen things on the internet that its quality is lower much to the ones of ipod touch. Being able to watch HQ videos of youtube on my iphone over wifi is one thing I do alot. And not being able to watch them in HQ over 3g is BS to me. I did my own test with the 3g speeds, On edge it nytimes loads at 45s, while on 3g is 25s. If I were to upgrade to 3g it would be to be able to use 3g to its max, but Since it will kill my battery and not show me good quality videos of youtube. then this sucks.

Someone go watch a video at the apple website and see if it plays in good HQ on 3g, Maybe that would tell us if its Youtube or all videos.

Are you serious???????? If true then I agree with you. The new iphone isn't worth it since they let the old iphone go to version 2.0

And everything you listed doesn't make up for just getting a stripped down GPS with a still slow connection in 3G. Thank god they sold out every time I got there. I'll avoid it until they offer a better iphone and one that can actually play flash and EVERY VIDEO CODEC.

It's actually 1920x1080 and HD starts at 1280x720. And if you want to see HD quality on a small screen watch a UMD Movie on a PSP.

well telenav supposed to release an app that will give you turn by turn directions but you will have to buy it. Bad thing I heard is GPS drains your battery, so a car charger adapter is a must. But from another thread I read this guy tested like 15 car adapters and none would work with the 3g iphone.

i did a side by side comparison with a V1 and 3G iphone..loading the same video at the same time.. and it is a big difference in quality from a wi-fi to the 3G version. The wi-fi version was very clear as the 3G version was heavily pixelated and to me, unwatchable.

I just did a side by side with a V1 and 3G ... turning off wi-fi and comparing Edge to 3G. The 3G video finished loading while the Edge version had barely reached about 25% ... BUT .. the quality to me was exactly the same, heavily pixelated in comparison to a wi-fi version. I also can see the "yellow tint" on the 3G version. But according to my wife doesn't really look bad....

I forgot to mention that I am having some sort of problem with my wi-fi connection, even though the signal shows its strongest on the iphone, the videos loaded very slow and even browsing in safari is very slow... the reason why i mention this is because even though it probably took a full minute or so just to load the first 20 seconds of the video, it still was VERY clear... So I do not see why the much FASTER loading 3G videos still look so bad... like someone mentioned in a previous post, maybe it has to do with AT&T more so than the iphone itself.

Those are some pretty invalid points, there.

Yes, it is more expensive. But it's 3G. You expect to pay the same?

Actually, battery life is better. If you had an iPhone 3G and an iPhone using 3G, the iPhone would die first.

It's not a crappier screen; it's an improved screen, just warmer. The iPhone's screen was more blue, and colder, which is what you were used to. The new screen provides for much more true colors.

GPS is capable of doing turn by turn, and that is possible with the AppStore.

Apple stated that 3G is not as fast WiFi. Did you expect it to be? It's approaching WiFi speeds, yet it's much faster than EDGE. In no way is it crappy.

I'm just saying, I wouldn't base my decision on whether or not to buy iPhone 3G because my YouTube videos aren't as sharp as they are on WiFi. And to me, it seems like you need to do a little bit more research before buying products.

I agree, but it Video Quality was lowered to lower Bandwidth usage. All it takes now is enough people to complain about it and Apple can fix it with an update.

Youtube only encodes two versions of their videos, low bandwidth and high bandwidth. It will give you whatever one your connection speed most closely resembles. With 3G, this is closer to the low-bandwidth version.
