I'm missing something here, i've watched numerous old youtube videos and such and i'm not sure if its because they are using an older itunes or not but i can't seem to create and sync a ringtone i made onto my iphone.

heres what i did and where i got:
chopped up the mp3 from my library using audacity
imported it into my itunes library
when to the toolbar and converted to AAC
now the file on my desktop says ______.m4r which should be the right file type correct?

now when i try to drag it to my itunes, it doesn't show up in ringtones nor does it even show up in my music library.

i feel im so close but am missing a small yet obvious step somewhere. any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

You don't drag the file from your desktop. After you've coverted it to AAC, you go into your music>itunes>itunes music>unknown artist>unknown album folder and change the file name there. After you change the filename, all you do is click on it and it will automatically move the newly changed .m4r to your ringtones folder. Then just sync to your phone and make sure you have it set to sync all ringtones in the folder of select the ones you want. Voila!:laugh2:

this is driving me nuts also.. i used to do it all the time but now i cant..!

after i convert to AAC, i right click the file and go to 'show in windows exlprer" and from there i rename to .m4r but after i do that, if i show the file info its now just songtitle.m4r.m4a it will not drop the m4a extension.. it seems that when i rename it im just renaming the title and now the file extension.. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG HERE!! helppppp hah

Its pretty easy to make a ringtone with windows on itunes 7.7. Just use audacity to cut the selected song you want. Go back to itunes create a playlist folder put the song you saved from audacity put it in the playlist right click it. Go to convert to acc and then depending where it was saved to usually in your music folder youll see a itunes folder. The trick to change to extension is to select that song u want go to tools folder options under view tap you will see hidden file folders select show hidden folders. After that change the extention from .m4a to m4r.Then go back to itunes drag it into the ringtone section sync your iphone 3g. it will show you your songs you have dragged to the ringtone folder. Works for mee!!!!! i was pretty stuck for a hour fiquring it out but it worked out!

I think I've got the gist of this here...but when I go to where iTunes converted the clip to AAC, in what way am I changing the file name? I think I'm missing something here. Many thanks for the help:smile:

I must be missing a step. I imported an MP3 file into my iTunes library. Then I followed iTunes' instructions to convert it to AAC, but it seems to always convert it to MPEG4. I tried going into the folders that ColsTiger described and renaming the file and double-clicking, but it didn't work. Did they patch this or something? Or am I screwing it up?

Lets see if I remember right from last night: I am on 7.7
Pick a song...right click and select options...
Down that page you see a start and stop option...that is where you will decide where you want the song to start or stop or whatever. I was told to keep the length of your tone around 30 seconds. Make sure both start and stop have check marks and your preferred times in them. When it is how you want it
, click ok...
Now right click on the new song AGAIN and click convert to ACC. it will play your new tone and you will see that you now have 2 listings of the song you started with.
Go back into options and rename your new song with ringtone or something on the end of it (just so you won’t delete it by accident). Click OK again.
Now you are going to delete the file you just created, but when it asks you what you want to do with the file...choose the keep on computer option.
Now go into your iTunes music folder under documents and settings/mymusic (for me)in windows explorer (assuming you are on windows) find your new file and rename it to .m4r.
(You have to have make sure that under folder option>view> hide extensions for known file types are unchecked to see the name of the files...)
Hope this helps.

Make a folder called ringtones in your itunes music library. When you have change the mp3 to an AAC file using itunes, locate the file and move it to the ringtones folder. Rename the file extension from m4a to m4r and double left click the file after renaming it. This should cause it to show up in the ringtones tab in itunes and start playing. As posted earlier, the ringtone should be around 30 seconds. I use audicty for editing the mp3 file and to increase (or decrease) the volume of the ringtone if neccessary.

The all around best ringtone maker is definitely phone zap but your phone has to be jailbroken.

Im about to update so I guess ill just use the audiko.net seems good but the only downfall is you can't test the song to see where it is starting and ending.

I need help. I tried moving the newly changed .m4r file to the Ringtones folder in iTunes, but it just won't show. What am I doing wrong? When I synced my iPhone, it showed that the new ringtones went to my iPhone. I can't see anything there either. Is there something I'm overlooking?

I'd appreciate any help since I had been working on this for hours!

Thank you in advance!

Just use iRinger (http://www.iringer.net/) ive made like 35 of them using it! There all in my iTunes library. Its Free to use, but there is extra features if you "donate" but the free one. Is perfectly fine, use audacity for the features you want (Only thing worth anything is the boost, and you can do that is Audacity)

Try to use google and get a guide for GarageBand... There are a tone out there. From what I hear Garageband is the best solution for Mac.

Here is one (http://www.tuaw.com/2008/07/08/tuaw-tip-make-iphone-ringtones-with-garageband/) I found with a search, hope it helps.

The easiest and free way is to use this web site! Don't waste anytime with programs to download and run on your computer. You can upload your MP3, edit the time range from the music, then create the .m4r for the iPhone, then download it.

Dump that file into your iTunes directory..I like to create another folder with all my music called, Ringtones, the update your iTunes so it sees and identifies it as a ringtone.

Sync and it will end up as a custom ringtone ready to select.

Just make sure it is 30seconds or less the ringtone you create. Working fine on mine.

I've put several custom ringtones on my iPhone 3G that were in no way purchased from iTunes. I am using a PC (not a MAC) and the new iPhone (3G/2.0). You don't need any special software... just iTunes 7.7 and you iPhone. Here's how you do it:

1. Listen to your MP3 and decide what part of the track you want as your ringtone (30 seconds maximum). Note the play time (for example, I would like to use 0:43 to 1:05 as my ringtone).

2. Right click on the MP3 in iTunes. Select "Get Info." Select the "Options" tab. Make sure the "Start Time" and "Stop Time" boxes are checked and enter the times you have selected for your ringtone. Click "OK."

3. Right click on the MP3 again, and select "Convert Selection to AAC." iTunes will create a second track with the same title.

4. Click and Drag the new track onto your desktop. Delete the track from iTunes.

5. On your desktop, right click on the track and select "Properties." If the filename has ".m4a" at the end, just change it to ".m4r", if it just has the track name, you will need to click "Cancel," open up "My Computer," select "Tools" and then "Folder Options." From there, you will select the "View" tab and uncheck the box next to "Hide extentions for known file types." Then go back to the beginning of this step and change ".m4a" to ".m4r"

6. Now the rest is simple. Back in iTunes, go to "File">"Add File to Library." Select the track from your desktop and click "Open." This will put the track in the Ringtones section of your library.

7. Go into the iPhone section of your iTunes and your newly created ringtone should be in the ringtones section ready to be synced! It will appear where the rest of the ringtones are in your phone.

I'm sorry for this being so long, but you should be able to have your own custom ringtones on your iPhone now, FOR FREE!!! :) You'll also want to go back to what you did in step 2 and uncheck the start and stop time so your MP3 will play in it's entirety again. If you have any questions, just email me!

This might be slightly off topic, but while i'm waiting weeks for my direct fulfilment, i decided to learn all i can about the 3g, lol,

Can you do multiple custom ringtones? so that you can have a different tone for each caller in your address book? or can you just have one ringtone for the phone?

One of the things i love on my Razr is being able to have a different tone for each person, so i know who's calling in advance (and can ignore it if it's someone i don't want to talk to)

kdjodi26
07-17-2008, 10:16 AM
yes. Just add the ringtones to your phone then go into your contacts to set the ringtone for that person. I really like the contacts feature on the phone (I didn't have the first iPhone, so it might be the same). It gives you the option to input street address, URL address, email address, specific ringtone, and photo ID. The street address is especialy handy with the GPS.

Oh out-fraking-standing! that's exactly what i wanted to know. sounds like it is almost identical to the contacts in my Razr.

Now, if my phone would ever ship.... i may call my local(ish) at&t store and see if they have any in stock, and just buy one, then cancel my direct fulfil whhen it shows up.

Another option is to jailbreak and ssh the .m4r file over. I had a file that would show up on iTunes but not on my iphone. There are two ways you can do this:

The easy way:
You can add files to the 'standard' ringtones by placing them under /Library/Ringtones (a symlink for /private/var/stash/Ringtones.\w+) This will show up on the list with all the other default ringtones

The 'other' way:
Custom ringtones are stored at /private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Ringtones/ It's usually stored as a 4letter hash of some sort followed by .m4a. I just copied my file there and named it YBKK.m4a. (For no real reason specifically.)
Next you needt to edit the Ringtones.plist file located at /private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/iTunes
This is a simple xml file and can be edited as simply as adding a new <key><dict> table entry for the new music. It'll look like this:
<key>YBKK.m4r</key>
<dict>
<key>GUID</key><string>0000000000000000</string>
<key>Name</key><string>glados_incoming_call</string>
<key>Total Time</key><integer>29100</integer>
</dict>

The Total Time field is in ms, so this file is 29.1sec long. It's best just to find a ringtone that works and then just copy theirs and edit appropriately.

I use a Mac, and I'm no expert with Garage Band, but it really is quite easy.
You literally just go into Garage Band, click on create a new project, drag and drop the song from iTunes, and then just adjust the song to the 40 second interval you like best from the song. I Googled to learn about it. Here's one pretty clear explanation of it.
(by the way, it says you don't need to bother to name the project, but I did, so that when I transferred the song to a ringtone, the ringtone has the proper name)

Hey guys and gals,

I can get ONE newly rem4r'ed ringtone to synch to my iphone, but when I put a whole bunch of them into my ringtone folder I get only one of them (one title) seemingly duplicated a zillion times. And it is the same ringtone, even though I uploaded different ones. Anybody having/solving a similar problem?
