Not sure if anyone else has noticed this problem, but with my v1 iPhone I was able to connect the iPhone to my car stereo using it's iPod adapter, and it would charge, and play the music. With the 3g I'm able to listen to my music but not able to charge. Now i get an error message saying charging is not supported with this accessory. Which I really find that kind of dumb seeing as my v1 iPhone was able to do it no problem. Has anyone else tried this? Can this be a firmware problem? Whats going on?????

yeah man it sucks apparently the iphone 3g is not able to charge with older ipod/iphone accessorys.. i tried plating it on my ihome which was like 80 bucks when i got it a while ago and it worked perfectly for my first iphone but now for teh iphone 3g it only plays and the "cannot charge" message comes up that you got. i really hope they fix this.. if its possible

Yea it really does suck. I was really relying on this seeing as the 3g is supposed to have a shorter battery life, I thought I was covered with my car stereo. I use my iphone as an iPod while I'm at work then when I get off I charge it, and now I have to ride home with a near dead phone. Apple really needs to get this fixed asap. Theres alot of people out there not just me that use their car stereos, iPod speakers, etc. as chargers for their iPhones when their not home or traveling and now their practically useless!

i used to just ise my iphone all day then dock it on my ihome when im going to sleep so it can charge and play music while im sleepin AND be my alarm. so id wake up to the alarm through the ihome speakers and id have a fully charged iphoen ready to go for another day. now i got to plug it in the ihum using the aux port and charge it by the wall with the wall charger iit came with. which is really gay. it does the same as i used to be able to but it so much more of a hassle.

My Acura TSX has a USB port so I'll check if it charges my iPhone.

Please don't use the word "gay" as a negative word. You may not have meant it that way, but think about how that comes across. You wouldn't post something that said "that's so Black," or "that's so Jewish," if you wanted to say that it was bad.

Yeah, i have an ipod connection to my stereo, and it no longer plays or chargers. I also used to use an ipod wall charger for v1 iphone, and this no longer works. :( had to buy a $40 car/wall charger.

Ditto. I plugged mine into the car charger and it gave a notice that it wasn't compatible, or something like that.

Back to the mall to get a car charger :/

As I posted earlier, I checked my Acura TSX to see if my iPhone won't play or charge through the USB port.

Although the iPhone 3G itself says that the iPhone wasn't made to be compatible, my phone still plays through the speakers and the phone still also charges.

So, I guess I'm good.

Appreciate it.

I'm amazed that they made this incompatible. Isn't it the same dock connector? Wouldn't Apple had to have gone out of their way to do render it incompatible with previous chargers? Will I need a separate charger for my iPod (too much stuff on it, can't replace the iPod) and my iPhone?

Oh well. Getting one next week regardless.

Which is how they get away with stuff like this...
