2.0 upgrade disabled the phone

I tried to do the 2.0 update. During the install, the phone went into restore mode. It seemed to take a long time and now all I have on the phone is a screen with a keyboard labeled (in many languages) emergency call. I can't interface in itunes with the phone. The phone has never been jailbroken. Anyone have this problem or know how to fix it. I would take it to the Apple store, but I think they will be busy today. I need to fix it today as I am leaving for vacation tomorrow. Any help appreciated.

Apple servers are overwhelmed.... it has taken some people 30 minutes... took me an hour... and others have been at it for 4 hours before 2.0 finally gets activated...
