I just updated my iPhone. It is not ready to use yet, and iTunes keeps trying to connect the iTunes store for something to do with the iPhone update as a last step and I keep getting a connection timed out error; anyone else have this problem? I hope this gets fixed QUICK, I'm already running behind today because of this stupid error.

I wonder if it is because of everyone trying to get the update all at once.

Thanks Apple.

Any idea how to get out of the slide for emergency/ connect to itunes mode.

Got the error:

iTunes could not connect to the iPhone "iPhone" because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000001).

I really don't want to buy a new iPhone -- nor pay all the new fees associated with it.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

just chatted with iTunes support...

this is what "Josh" told me..

"Yea the software just came out about an hour ago. So right now, there is just alot of traffic from old iPhone upates, new iPhone activations and iPod updates.

I would keep trying periodically. It will most likely be quite busy all day, but you should be able to squeeze in there.

There are several million people who use iTunes. It also depends (on) traffic in specific locations."

When I said, "Thanks, I guess."

"Josh" said... "You are most welcome. Have a swell day!"

No kidding..

Just happened to me too. I have to leave for work in 15 minutes...with a phone i cant even use!!!!!!

Just got off the phone with ATT apple support. You are going to love this. Because version 1 phones need to conect to the att and apple servers to complete the 2.0 software update and all the new i phone activations that are going on the servers are overloaded. Sounds like last June all over again. They told me it could take hours before our phones work again. They also told me to keep it conected to Itunes the entire time and it will automatically do it. This is crap. I am out of business until they get their s--t together.. Hope this helps

Comb,
Different servers. The server all the new 3G's are being activated on is the same server we are trying to access to do the final stage of the update. I'm assuming Apple is giving priority to the NEW iPhone owners and alienating us faithful Apple supporters.
The iTunes store you are accessing fine is a completely different server.

Agreed, Ran V1 iPhone with 'leaked' firmware overnight and downloaded loads of apps etc - occasional crash but awesome to see. Now just finishing restore to official 2.0 f/w and only issue was itunes timeout.

I succesfully activated after about 45 attempts using unplug method - maybe the servers are starting to cope.

If you had purchased Super Monkey Ball and backed up - has anyone noticed it takes an age to re sync!

(I do get the image in ma head now of apple employees at the back of the activation server blades fanning paper like mad and 'cranking' the juice on the aircon up b4 getting their bums felt by their bosses (Scottish phrase for kicked in the bum).

Appy days :2cool:

So you phone does not connect to itunes also? Someone mentioned that there phone connected after 50 trys. is that manually removing and plugging back in or does it do it automaticly?
That was me... not sure if it was really 50 tries, but it was certainly somewhere around there. No need to unplug it, just click on Music (or any other tab in iTunes) and then click on the iPhone tab again, and it will try again.

I've been trying for a while now and mine just went through, yay! This is what I did, plugged in the iphone, itunes would start and I would get the error message. Hit ok, click "Music" in your Library, then click back on your iPhone in iTunes. It'll try again. This way you're not unplugging and plugging. Keep trying and eventually it'll go through, I guess it's just luck at this point with everything being so overloaded. I'll tell you one thing, I was never so happy to hear the static noise through my speakers.. but that got old again really quick, haha!!

Who else wants an instinct now? I can't believe the stubborness of Apple in holding off the 2.0 Upgrade until the launch of the 3G. Why get into a situation where they know the servers will be overloaded? They could have released 2.0 a week ago for the "early adopters" and possibly have avoided such a logjam.

With live TV, no activation problems, and numerous other features, the instinct looks better and better every day!

Be patient, the servers are having problems. Keep trying to connect either by unplugging and replugging the phone in or as someone else suggested, clicking on Music to show your library, then clicking on your phone under Devices.

You can either unplug and replug it in or toggle between clicking on Music and the iPhone. Either way should get it to try and reconnect. It'll happen, you just have to keep trying. I'd wait for a timeout from the Store before attempting to connect again.

Thanks Apple. No one reimburses you when your business is shutdown for the day because your phone is not working. Just another in the long line of reasons to avoid their products.

I do like the phone a lot, but not at the cost of losing business. A phone is a business tool, not a luxury item. I need the features such as email, voicemail, etc.

I've talked to both Apple and AT&T, and there is no option to getting a phone that works, even on a temporary basis without renewing my contract and selecting a different phone. Why would I commit for 2 additional years with a company that will not help me get my business up and running today?

I wish we were all in a different situation today. I smell a class action, do you?

Wow this is FUBAR.

First off why for a firmware update should i have to connect to a server? It should be download the update and install the update. Real brilliant system that makes you connect to a server in the middle of a firmware update which can lead to a potentially temporarily bricked iphone.

Second. Ok apple wants to do this moronic way of an update to the firmware--fine. How about releasing 2.0 the day before the 3G iphone sale? It was obviously just sitting there and ready to go, but they had to have their grand launch of everything iday.

installing the software and getting it activated are two different steps... both of which need to be completed before you have 2.0 working on your iPhone...

iTunes is up and running because iTunes is being "served" by other machines that aren't getting crushed by all the folks buying new phones and all the people with "old" phones trying to get the new software...

At about 9am, after only 15 persons entering the store, an employee comes out and says they are OUT of 16GB iPhones. So, I got in my car and went to the local mall MAC store. I got in line....about 120 people in front of me. A MAC employee comes out and says the line is 4Hrs. long at my spot. So, I went home to update my wifes iPhone (she does not want to upgrade) to 2.0.0 fw. I thought I could wiat for the lines to die down and have fun with 2.0.0. Yikes! What a bad day for Apple in my eyes. So, I am repeatedly trying to get iTunes to re-activate my wifes iPhone. This is really bad. I was thinking to return to the mall MAC store but with all these server problems not sure if it is worth it.

Okay... Finally got it to hookup and download. WAFPITA!!! Ruined my morning. What's up with Apple? They can't be that stupid. Why didn't they let people with the older phones download the upgrade last week?

A question for those who have finally updated: Did your iTunes status bar change? I've been sitting on "Accessing iTunes Store..." for about 20 minutes now (it usually tells me the connection is bad after a minute or two). Does this mean I'm getting closer to finalizing the process?

Nope...that is where the primary issue is residing. My phone has been bricked for the past 6 1/2 hours because of it.

Just received a message on the iPhone during activation. It says:

Activation Alert
No signal detected

Interesting, hmmmm.

Q. How many hours does it take for Apple to reboot their servers???

A. About 8 hours, it takes a long time to call the person responsible for the server room from a bricked iPhone...

Hope this means we all should be getting through. I still have the same error message about no service detected, it hasn't changed in about 10 minutes. Hopefully it's not bricked for real.

Maybe they put a hold on the downloading of the new software while they clear up this whole mess with the servers.

Has anyone else noticed that the news stories are focused on new iPhone adopters who are out of luck and not mentioning the thousands of gen 1 iPhone owners who have been locked out of their phone for the day?

That might make some sense to delay the software until they're ready... Anyone else making any progress. over 15 minutes waiting for a signal now....

that is my guess as well.... that they stopped 2.0 from being downloaded for abit to ease the situation... they are probably trying to help the folks with the new phones... : )

there is another thread for someone who was in the middle of going to 2.0 and now iTunes is telling him that he is current a 1.4..

That is all I can think of at this point.
I'm just hoping when I get home from work the stupid activation server is back up.

I got it to work, but when I try to restore to backup, I get the apple and the spinning wheel of death.

Is my only recourse now to set it up brand new, thus obliterating my contacts and other info??

You will have the back up of those contacts on your PC. That is the purpose of the backup. Plus..if you use Outlook you can easily sync them.
