http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/10/iphone-firmware-2-0-is-live/

That's right. If you've been dying for a round of Super Monkey Ball, now's your chance. The firmware is available only through a direct link, not iTunes, so if you want it, follow the read link to sweet, succulent 2.0 paradise. We're loading it up as we speak, so we'll let you know what's good ASAP.

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/07/10/iphone-2-0-firmware-5a347-available-early/

In order to install the firmware, you will have to do it manually by pressing the Option key when pressing the "Check for Update" button in iTunes. Then select the .ipsw file manually. If for some reason your download is a ".zip" file, rename it to ".ipsw" before proceeding.

It's .ipsw for iphone software.

Use this link to download it and you should only have one file. Download it somewhere where you'll be able to find it when you install.

I'm still waiting for the restore to complete, I'm assuming it didn't brick my phone.

It's no big deal if it just caused a restore... if the install is successful it wipes everything out anyway. I'll try it again.

Ahh, it just finished the restore and is rebooting. The phone looks to be ok.

Yeah, I don't think this patch is ready for prime time.

I could understand it, maybe a little, bombing during the install on a 1.1.4 phone like mine with all of it's various configurations and files being present. But the fact it bombs when trying to patch a freshly restored 1.1.4 phone with nothing on it tells me there's something wrong with the patch. I've had this phone since iDay and it's never had a problem with being patched before.

For all you Mac users out there: Safari automatically unzips the ipsw file, which you do NOT want. Instead, right click over the link and choose "Download Linked File As". This will ensure that the .ipsw file remains intact. Alternatively, you can use Firefox, which doesn't automatically unzip files.

Tharmsen,
Two things:
1) Are you using the latest version of iTunes?
2) If you're on a Mac, make sure you didn't unzip the ipsw file (which Safari does automatically....make sure you right click and choose "save downloaded link as, to prevent Safari from unzipping the ipsw file).

tharmsen
07-10-2008, 12:14 PM
Yup, latest version of iTunes (7.6.2) and I downloaded the IPSW file using Firefox so it's not unzipped.

Here's what happens.

Settle in then, because it takes a loooong time. Much longer than you would expect. This update is much different than all the others. I've never had my phone completely wiped out like this one. Sometimes it's the simplest things. For the ones that were up at daybreak this morning we did this in order. 7.7 was available first and then we found 2.0, so there was no way we could leave it off.

No it didn't. I read here in Bravo's post this morning that it was available for download at Apple.com but not through iTunes Update. I downloaded it then. I read about the 2.0 update file being available at macrumors and downloaded it there. Apple hasn't put either file on the regular update list yet. I'm wondering when they will.

Interesting, huh? I found that the first time I RESTORED from my backup and it worked OK, but the Mail app wouldn't work at all, but it retained the iRick carrier logo. So I did it all again (installed the ipsw) but selected to INSTALL AS NEW IPHONE. Afterwards everything is fine and the carrier logo is back to stock. I think the issues were because I installed right over a 1.1. JB and didn't select NEW PHONE in iTunes.

You should not have to rename anything. Are you using a Mac? If so, Safari automatically unzips the ipsw file, which you do NOT want. Instead, right click over the link and choose "Download Linked File As". This will ensure that the .ipsw file remains intact. Alternatively, you can use Firefox, which doesn't automatically unzip files.

And if, for some reason, there is a .zip after the .ipsw, then GetInfo on it and delete the .zip at the end leaving the .ipsw at the end.

Hope that makes sense.

Ok I want to try this, but this is scaring me...

Normally if you choose to update, the iPhone or iPod touch software is updated but your settings and media are not affected. If your device currently has a software version prior to 2.0 (1.x) and you are updating to software version 2.0 or later, all data on your device will be erased in order to perform install the new software. In this case, iTunes will offer to create a one-time media backup of your device depending on what content is on your device and what content is stored in the iTunes Library you are connected to.

Am I just reading too much into this?
I've never jailbroken/hacked my iPhone before so I'm not worried about any of that, I'm just wondering what the general effects are to the nature that is suggested in the warning... I guess I just dont completely understand the lingo.

Ah, I just did this and 2.0 is installed on my phone. however whenever I plug my phone into my computer iTunes gives me an error that says "iTunes was unable to load dataclass information from Sync Services. I think it worked.
It went blank for a little and then it came back up with the original world background and said "Iphone is now activated."
Then I slid to unlock and saw contacts, music all gone.
Then a thing came up on iTunes that asked if i wanted to restore from the backup so I said yes. Now it says "Restore in Progress" on my phone.
To the people who have already done it: Does this sound right?

Is there any reason why I shouldn't upgrade to 2.0? I'm runnin 1.1.4 right now, but I doubt I'll pay for any apps in the appstore. I'm assuming the Devteam will stay running strong, but will there be any sort of jailbreaks for fw 2.0+?

Maybe not so much for the games, but I've downloaded 10-15 free apps that are just plain useful.

When ANYBODY updates to 2.0 from and of the 1.x firmware, they will get this message. It doesn't matter whether you're using the downloaded 2.0 file that we are using today or if you wait until apple releases 2.0 to everyone tomorrow. Every iphone that upgrades to 2.0 will be completely wiped out. This is different than any other firmware update in the past. That warning is just so people won't freak out when their phone is completely redone.

It will completely wipe the phone back, but then restore all of your media as long as you have a recent backup on your computer. Make sure to sync you iphone before you start the process and you should have any problem. You also need to have enough space on your hard drive for itunes to build the backup before it wipes it.

According to Erica Sadun at TUAW, Shazam is only a free trial. Apparently there will be a subscription fee...most likely $5 - $10 a month. That totally sucks.

jimmyrules712

FYI that 2.0 verison that everyone is linking to is NOT the correct 2.0 firmware. That firmware is 5A347 and the correct firmware is 5A345. Here is the info i've found:

"iPhone 3G is shipping with build 5A345. 5A347 is a build that was never intended for a production environment, and certainly not for installation on the original iPhone! As I mentioned earlier, it was built to be installed on iPhone 3G development test units only (note, I did not say production units), and has not been tested or designed for the original iPhone.

Build 5A347 contains a significant amount of debug code and that is, in part, the reason for the slowdowns iPhone classic users are seeing. As also mentioned previously, when 32k of debug data is collected, the build is designed to dump the data to a location which no production iPhone supports, and hence you're seeing timeouts while the write process attempts to do its job."

I did install the 5A347 firmware on my v1 and it seems to work fine, but as soon as the correct version is released I'm going to switch to that.

Right click on the file and go to properties and then click on unblock.

shift click on restore and select the file again. it worked this time.

just now completed the restore and its working again..

Well, there is a new version that came out today. IT is about 7MB smaller, so it appears that it removes the debugging software of the beta file that we got yesterday. The only difference between the two files name is a 1 in the file name instead of a 2.

Early released 2.0 version from 7/10 - iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

Publicly released 2.0 version from 7/11 -iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

Because the first one includes some debugging software, I would recommend crossgrading to the publicly released version. But, I wouldn't do it today. I would wait until tomorrow when the apple itunes activation servers aren't quite so jammed up.
