They've found the link to the download, but you have to install it by holding down the Option key and pressing Check for Update in iTunes and then selecting the ipsw file.

2.0 available (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/07/10/iphone-2-0-firmware-5a347-available-early/)

It didn't work on my PC, but maybe if you've got a mac, you can get it to come up.

It took me over 20 minutes to update the phone. So far so good. I didn't hold 'option' + 'check for update'. I held 'option' + 'restore' to do the upgrade. Hope this helps anyone having trouble.

The 'contacts' button is pretty handy I guess.
My mail settings were actually restored which never was the case with FW upgrades before. I had to manually enter them before. Kudos to Apple for this small fix on my upgrade procedure.

Make sure you sync first, just in case something goes wrong. Mine went fine and is now doing the Restore from the backup/sync I did about 20 minutes ago

Update done, no problems except that all my installed apps from being jailbroken are gone. App Store is on the front page of the phone and there are 20 or so available that I can see (under Featured). Haven't downloaded any or checked out any of the other features. Woohoo!

Quite a few are free, most seem to be 9.99 with one being 49.99. There are several hundred available if you look at all the Categories!

Mine is still updating. I had to decipher the mac instructions a little, but didn't have any trouble getting to the file. Just download the update and remember where it downloads on your computer. On a PC, hold Shift and Check for Updates and you can browse to the update file (.ipsw). Once you do that it starts updating just like always. Getting close now.

I just downloaded the free Talking French Phrasebook. It first asks you for your iTunes password then begins the download. As it's doing it, the icon for the App shows up on the front page with a small progress bar across the bottom that shows the download status. When it's done, the app's icon remains and you can run it.

Mine is restoring from backup now. Should be getting close.

Check that. It's got to load 1160 songs first.

Does it take anyone else like three minutes to "back up" their phone when syncing?

It takes waaaay longer than you would think. Just be patient. Mine probably took 40-45 minutes to upgrade completely. With this update the phone is completely wiped out. None of the earlier updates did that. At the end, itunes will completely load all of your settings, data, and media back to your phone. Don't let it scare you.

Are you on a mac? If you are then follow these steps from macrumors:

Be sure to fully sync prior to proceeding. In order to install this firmware, you will have to do it manually by pressing the Option key (Shift under Windows) when pressing the "Check for Update" button in iTunes version 7.7. Then select the .ipsw file manually. If for some reason your download is a ".zip" file, rename it to ".ipsw" before proceeding.

Yea I noticed that too when I synced my phone a while after I updated to 2.0. It took easily 4-7 minutes to complete the backing up process.

FYI that 2.0 verison that everyone is linking to is NOT the correct 2.0 firmware. That firmware is 5A347 and the correct firmware is 5A345. Here is the info i've found:

"iPhone 3G is shipping with build 5A345. 5A347 is a build that was never intended for a production environment, and certainly not for installation on the original iPhone! As I mentioned earlier, it was built to be installed on iPhone 3G development test units only (note, I did not say production units), and has not been tested or designed for the original iPhone.

Build 5A347 contains a significant amount of debug code and that is, in part, the reason for the slowdowns iPhone classic users are seeing. As also mentioned previously, when 32k of debug data is collected, the build is designed to dump the data to a location which no production iPhone supports, and hence you're seeing timeouts while the write process attempts to do its job."

I did install the 5A347 firmware on my v1 and it seems to work fine, but as soon as the correct version is released I'm going to switch to that.
