I am not letting the agents touch my phone! i've seen how they handle phones and it's not pretty. I will plug it into the cord and activate it myself, or i will leave the store and activate at home.

I'm sure they'll be very careful with these very expensive phones.

yeah, the last time a rep handled my phone (was at verizon) he dropped it and argued about giving me a new phone. once i got the guy to go get a new one, i would not let him touch my phone after that. i am sure that the apple or att store reps will allow me to plug my own phone into the activation computer myself.

No, you will not. AT&T put an end to home activation (and unlocking).

WOW! This is funny. Judging from everyone's reaction to the proceedure, it will take a little longer than 15 minutes to set this bad boy up. There will be a lot of arguing and what not. I hope the Apple geniuses are ready.
If this is true, it is stupid. They should allow the consumer to be the first to handle their phone. They should allow the consumer to plug their phone in and only guide you if you have never activated an iPhone before usng iTunes. They should only assist if you don't have an iTunes account and need to activate one. This should not be the case at all.
I really hope this is a joke.
Damn, now that I'm thinking about it, I'm sure I will want to activate my own phone. I use iTunes all the time!
I know! I should bring rubber gloves with me and insist that the person wear them before breaking open my box and getting started.

They won't be activating it through itunes this time. It'll be activated through their regular system.

I doubt my AT&T store will follow these guidelines -- they have shown themsleves to be bass ackwords at times. It probably should just be a give and go

Give and go led to massive unlockings before. At&t wants their money's worth for their subsidies.

They had better be extremely careful with it. Note that I'll be giving at a severe cleaning with alcohol when I get home.

I will just simply tell them that I can plug it in myself and I want to open the box, etc. I am buying a high value item and I will not allow them to handle my stuff. The geniuses I have been to have been less than careful when handling my stuff and other people's stuff at the genius bar. I don't expect they will care if they put a scratch on it or put it down hard onto the table, etc. Even in the manual, it tells you to plug into iTunes to activate the phone; it can be done, who knows if they will allow that. I know I heard on the ATT conference call that the president of wireless said if the in-store activation does not happen for some reason, customers can activate on iTunes at home.

if they mishandle my iphone at all ill demand a new one. i dont care if its already activated and they were just setting it down too hard. -_- it better be in 100% PERFECT MINT CONDITION when i get it in my hands to take home.

i think if we are firm on the fact that "i am here to buy an iphone and want to open and handle it alone please" everything will be ok. just sucks we cant get the box, pay for it and walk out, then activate it at home or work in my case.

I feel the same way juzcallmeg0d! I will actually tell them that I prefer to open the box, get acquainted, then I can connect the cable and be out of there in x amount of mins.

im kinda with you there. but then again, all this talk about how they treat phones i am not so sure. i know i have a regular old phone now an when i brought it in for repair, they didnt use a gentle approach with it. makes me wonder though, this is an expensive phone.

Should the diaper be white or black? :gasp:

Should the diaper be white or black? :gasp:
That depends... If scratches or setting-it-down-too-hard are your only concerns, then I would say that color does not matter. However, if you are also concerned about lint, then you should make sure that your diaper matches the color of the phone you are buying.

I just stopped by the apple store, and they said they wouldn't take the iphone out of the box to activate it. There won't be much (if any) touching at the apple store.

Odd, that's not consistent with the announcements. There isn't at home activations this year. I would take his word with a grain of salt.

I know there isn't at home activations. He seems to think that they can activate it with minimal touching in the store (he said they would open the box, but still activate it without physically taking it out of the box). Plus, he seemed to think that it would only take 15 min per customer to activate. We will see, and thanks for the warning, but I always carry a heavy dose of salt with me wherever I go!

Haha, ah I see now. I'm don't care the least about touching - but the less the better I suppose. Think how long 15 minutes per customer will last for those waiting further back in line!

Get a life people. I've bought numerous phones and never has the agent been purposefully trying to damage my phone. I will be pissed if somebody in front of me makes a big deal about the worker touching his precious iPhone before he is able to. It's a phone, not like he is doing surgery on you.

Maybe I took it a little to far but people need a little more patience and understanding. I feel for the people working retail man. People are pretty much a-holes sometimes towards retail employees and overreact at the littlest thing.

all of you crying about them touching your phone are a bunch of little girls in tutus.... its a phone for christ sake... its going to 100% GET SCRACHED OR DROPPED someday... i hardly think that the useless sales rep is gonna pull out a hammer and beat your new phone into obvlion....
but anyway... about the activation i bet they wont have to touch the phone at all, maybe not even open the box because since they are doing it though a normal att system all they need is the sim id and imei number... just like how you order a nextel off amazon and its activated when it shows up at your door.... no biggy
