I just got back from the local ATT store and I am shocked by what I heard. I have a total of 4 lines on my account, 2 of which are eligible for an upgrade. I want to get an iphone and put one of the lines that isnt eligible on it while switching one of the ones that is eligible to continue the obligation on the line that would be on the iphone (hopefully this makes sense). The person at the ATT store said this isnt possible...
Anyone know if that is correct? It seems like they are just costing themselves business..
Any ideas for workarounds other than paying the extra $200??
Thanks

The line will have to have the data plan on it, so there's no way to do it without you paying the full price and not the discounted upgrade price.

What if you go and get the iPhone on an eligible line and take it home. Then go back a couple of days later and say that you want to give it to your daughter, for instance. You then tell them that you need to switch the data line to "her" phone number(which is in actuality your phone number). I think they would prefer to have you keep paying the $30 a month vs. just returning the phone at that point.
I think it's worth a shot.

That might work, or they might just want you to pony up the difference.

Then you say, "NO, I'll just return it." And maybe have a go at the manager ;)
Do you think they'll really do that?

You'll just have to try and let us know.

Hey, I just saw that you're in NJ. Have you tried the AT&T store at Menlo Park Mall in Edison?
Your idea of actually switching phone numbers is interesting...or maybe do that for the first 28 days and then tell them that your 70 year old mom-in-law wants' to "give" it to you ;) because she doesn't like it.
