Hi,
Just want to know does activating the iphone 3G require taking it out of the box whilst instore, seeing as there are a number of reports going round that the iphones come 'bricked'. If this is true then it kinda sucks as i was hoping to get it as a birthday gift for someone:frown:
thanks for any help

Yes it does require for the rep. to take the phone out of the box for activation. It is explicitly stated that you can not leave the store w/o the iPhone being activated.

That's a really good question, as I'm sure other ppl will try to get one as a gift for someone else. I would call ATT and ask them. They're the only ones who will know for sure.

Because a giftcard makes such a fun present compared with surprising someone with an iphone.
Technically, it "works"... but it definitely isn't the same.

You can't buy one without a contract yet. They have stated that they "might" do that later. No time frame has been announced.
To the OP, you'll have to take it out of the box to be activated. This is not such a bad thing. Last year when everybody tried to activate them, some people had to wait days before theirs finally started working. Mine took about 16 hours. This way the very expensive phone will be working when you walk out the door.

Store rep told me that the iphone comes in the box sealed. the contract and payment must be done instore, take the iphone home and THEN use itunes 7.7 to register and set up your account, of course this could be absolute rubbish info... it was a rep in store

Things might be different in the UK. In the US, at&t and Apple will both require it to be activated before leaving the premises.

Yah i remember that. Except for me it worked right away, but that might be because i didnt activate it until the morning after it came out. My computer wasnt working that night for some reason :tounge:
