First post, hope I'm at the correct discussion...
Am thinking about getting the new iPhone, (never had one, don't know a thing about it) to see if it will benefit me in my job as a bellman in a major city.
I'm trying to find a easier/faster way to give directions (local attractions, restaurants, stores, public transportation etc.), a map application, preloaded info I can store to text to a guest???, plus any other suggestions!
Thanks for any responses to this request !:laugh2:

I would say it would most definitely help, especially if you are new to an area and don't know the local landmarks/establishments very well. Only problem will be that guests asking questions may want a hard copy of directions or maps.

That's where bluetooth printing will need to be possible....:laugh2:

Sure it would. And with 3G, it'll give you the info even quicker. Your hotel may have wifi already enabled, so you could probably expect wifi speeds. IF they asked you where the nearest Western Union agent was you could type it in and give them door to door directions in under a minute.

Another twist on this topic is whether the hotel/company is paying for the data/trouble of using a non-standard way of getting information to customers. My wife growls at me when I work over time (fly on trips over the week, for example) and don't get paid overtime. If it's your iPhone and your out of pocket costs, keep in mind that you are paying for a service free to your company.

I was at the Ala Moana Center Subway yesterday and a tourist asked me directions to Wal-Mart/Sam's Club. I had such the hardest time.
In Hawaii, most of the street names are in Hawaiian so telling visitors street names just doesn't help. I was thinking if I had an iPhone 3G (or even the v1), it would be so much easier to show him where to go.
As far as helping a bellman, I think it would. Plus, you'd be the coolest bellman in town!!! :2cool:

Thank you all for your suggestions !!:laugh2:
Absolutely it would help. Even the V1 iPhone would be good. I got the opportunity to help someone out on Christmas Eve this past year in a city I knew nothing about. She wanted to find a particular bookstore and I typed in the name in Maps and it found several. I gave her the phone number and pointed her in the general direction.
As long as the person you're trying to help knows something about where they want to go (name, type of business, etc...), Maps will be a huge asset to a Bellman.
