I'm trying to make the decision whether to get an 8 or 16 GB iphone, too bad the appstore doesn't open until launch.

I'm not a big music guy, so 1 gb should be enough for that.
3 gb for video and/or rentals.
1 gb for OS.
So that leaves me with about 3 gbs left over for apps or games.

Do we have any idea what size major programs like turn-by-turn GPS software, and other major applications will take up?

Also i have been known to be quite a gamer, and I might be looking to get a couple fairly complex games for trips and whatnot, along with several small time-waster games. So any word on what kinda file sized we'll be looking at for games?

Thanks

from the information that has been announced i wouldn't expect to see very many apps getting to be larger than 10mb each seeing how this would require wifi, most apps will be in the 1-5mb range in my opinion based on experience with installer

Steve has put a limit of 2Gb on each app. I would bet that the large companies with deep pockets will create some rather large apps. If you get into GPS apps. the maps alone could get that large. The 2009 US maps for Garmin are 2+ Gb large.

Remember, the size of the download is not indicative of the memory needed to run the app. You could have a 5Mb download, but once installed (and the setup file is deleted), the app could take up only 3Mb or possibly it could expand to 8 Mb or more (due to data structures and buffers that the app creates a runtime).

So, it would be speculation, at best, as to estimating how much memory an app would take.

It is, however, a sure bet that live GPS, turn-by-turn voice prompting will take a boat-load of RAM unless, of course, the maps are retrieved real-time from a web service or other online fashion (which could hinder performance, IMHO).

This is a good reason to hold onto your v1 iPhone if you are a current iPhone user so that you can install 2.0 and see how the apps perform. 8gb should be enough to get a decent amount of apps on there with no noticable performance issues. I doubt you'll be able to fill all 9 pages with apps....lol.
