View Full Version : Lose your car? iPhone can find...

Here's a cool app. You park your car in a large parking lot with many other cars. Before you leave, run this app and it remembers the location. When you are done shopping/watching the game/leaving the office/etc, simply run the app again and it will give you turn-by-turn directions to your car.

I can think of many other uses for this! ;)

Good for going off roads, like quad/biking and finding your way back using the same path.

A couple come to mind...

1) When hiking/biking, you can set a waypoint/starting point and find your way back

2) Geotagging photographs. I'm waiting for someone to write an app that outputs interval readings from the GPS unit into the standard geotagging format. Yeah, I know that iPhone 3G comes with geotagging, but you have to use the iPhone camera. I'm a semi-professional photographer and I have my own (better) equipment. ;-)

That would be a nice idea. Although I already use it with my PPC phone, it is a great feature to have. Just take a picture and it tags it into Google Maps.

I hope its free, because at the indy 500, I parked in someones yard, and I jsut used my blackjack 2 and google maps on it, and with the gps I was able to save my location near the car, and I jsut used the current location to my car. It was free and easy.

after some thinking a i realized that this app is not needed, google maps that is already on the iphone will do an even better job, instead of running this app, just start up google maps and drop a pin at the location you want to remember, then when you want to return to it just select it and get directions to that spot all from google maps

But doesn't Google maps only map-out roads? If you go off-road (such as in parking lots, hiking trails, etc), then the maps don't work as well? I though Google maps can only direct you to a known address?

you can put the pin anyware tho regardless of wether there is a street or not, and with gps you'll see your location anywhere even if your not on a street, so just watch your dot and move towards the pin lol

i doubt this app as detailed maps of parking lots and fields you know?

not to be mean or anything but come on, who the f#$% can't find there car after shopping has got to have an iq of like below 50 and then they shouldnt be driving.

however this may be useful in other areas like hiking, fishing, but hey will we get a signal? i mean isn't the point of camping or outdoors stuff to get lost and be in an area with out signals.....i know thats what i do, just my 2 cents

no soccer moms cannot park at all.i mean i try to be reasonable when i can but its really annoying when you park in the back and then theres like 10 lanes around you and they go 2 lanes away and then the doors open and all hell breaks loose with kids. the worst part though is that there are so many people that drive off now because there scarred. i dont care if you blasted my car and then waited for me to show up and explain and then do the whole insurance police drama, atleast you were a decent person and knew you ****ed up and are taking responsibility. ive seen 2 good accidents and the person was going to drive off to and i was like" hey buddy i witnessed what happen, and have your car info and license plate, and my brothers a cop, so lets see how far you get" the one lady just got out and started crying. it was one of those ohh its a few yrs older, they wont care, yea right, i dont care if the car you hit is older, or looks beat up, you did wrong and you need to bulk up and accept that responsibility, **** happens and everyone is going to crash or **** up one day, its just how you react that matters.

i drive a srt-4, jeep wrangler, 69 camaro, and hopefully soon srt-8 challenger

One use is finding that damn suitcase full of money in 'Fargo'.

Oh, I forgot. You can also take a picture of where you park with the phone's camera. Most large malls and attractions use coded markers in the lots.

-Like one of my friends at work had his car hit when as he was coming back from his break. . .See we work at McDonalds and our McD is right across the street from the Townemall and as he was coming out of the mall...he came out just in time to see it get hit:frown: whats worst is that the lady driving the van acted as if she didnt even see/feel it and drove off. He tried to chase her and yell but she ofcourse ignored him and kept driving hopefully the mall has security cameras outside to have seen that:foot:

And ya kno us being teenagers and him having a car just isnt that easy to just say it can repaired or fixed, cause on mimimum wage its gonna take forever he might not ever get it fixed

man that really sucks, i feel bad for anyone that has to go through that ****. its good though that there is alteast some honest people out there. if i ever witness anything i try to be a good citizen. ive only had my jeep broke in once in high school and had some kids put chewing gum all over my srt-4, luckily i caught them in the act and chased them down(they didnt expect a heavier guy could run that fast)( i would chased them in the car though if i had to i was having a very bad day and with that got worse) and had the mall police give there parents a ring a ding ding and had them pay me alot of $$$ for for the repairs. some kids i tell yea, i mean dont they got better things to do, i mean atleast do stupid stuff at night not in broad daylight.

Satellite signals are not like cellular signals. Satellite signals (specifically GPS) reach just about everywhere (if not everywhere). The only times would be if you were deep in a cave or the signals were blocked by large structures (natural or man-made).

Google Maps runs off of the internet, though. How are you going to place your position on a map that you can't access?

I predict there will eventually be location-based applications with local maps provided on the device, like the many that are available today (at least for Pocket PCs).

G-Park will tell you which way to go to find your lost car. You'll know where it is and which direction to walk, but it probably won't say to "go to the fifth row, third car from the left."
