I thought it was only at&t stores, but evidently Apple wants in on the fun.

8AM Apple Stores (http://www.apple.com/retail/)

I wonder what they'll do about thier mall stores.

I pretty much thought Apple would open at 8 also. As far as malls go, they can get special permission thru management for this. It is just like an anchor store having a midnight sale or something along this line.

I'm sure they'll have lines roped off and will take limited numbers in at the time just like last year.

No doubt. When you walk in you won't know if you are at Apple or the movies.

so do you wait outside of the mall or inside somewhere

I'm sure it's going to be outside of the mall. They will likely form a line at the entrance nearest the Apple store. I also expect them to escort people into the mall instead of letting people run wild.

I don't know. The mall's in our area open the doors as early as 8am every day to let people walk the area for exercise. This is mostly older folks and groups of women. You may find that areas will be roped off right in front of the Apple stores. With security of course.

Well last year at the Apple store at International Plaza in Tampa the first 20 or so people were allowed to stand inside and the auxiliary line was outside that had about 100 more people in it. I don't see many malls being too happy about having a line wrapping through the concourse for possibly a few hours. Dunno though, this year could be entirely different.

I can see your point. We didn't have our Apple store on iday last year. I am sitting here thinking where the store is located in the mall and the closest entrance. The store is pretty much in the middle of the main wing and the entrance's are pretty far away. There may be a service door nearby for deliveries and maybe that is where they will bring people in.

The Apple store in Tampa (as well as the new one in Brandon) are both close to a mall entrance so I don't imagine there being too much chaos. I'm still going to go to an AT&T as I feel the reps could better help with plan issues (if they should arise). I don't think I'm going to have any hardware issues that warrant an Apple tech.

Very smart. That is exactly what I would do if I was getting one just for that very reason. The geek in me would rather go to Apple, but in this case.......

do you think the apple store will require security measures like last four digits of ssn or security passwords when you activate there?

From the Apple website:

What to bring.
To purchase and activate iPhone 3G, you need the following:*

Credit card
Social security number
Valid, government-issued photo ID
Your current wireless account number and password or PIN (if you’re new to AT&T)

The concierge at my local mall told me they will be opening the mall doors at 7AM for both the AT&T and Apple stores on Friday. I think I'll head over around 6:45 AMish.

^ I wouldn't take that to mean that there won't be a line formed up outside. I don't foresee them just letting everyone run in like a bunch of crazies.
