View Full Version : WiFi - Connected but not working

Got a rather odd issue...

Set up the iPhone to use my home wireless network. Sees the Network, and I am able to connect to the network just fine.

The problem is that no matter what I do, the iPhone defaults to EDGE. It will NOT use my wireless network even though it connected just fine and shows it checked in the Settings.

I use a bunch of WiFi products (Wii, PS3, Laptop, Desktop, 8525 Cell, etc) and every one of them are able to connect just fine, so I know it's not my wireless network.

I also tried Static settings and manually assigned it stats.. at that point it goes into wireless mode, but will error out when trying to use Safari...

Anyone else having a similar issue? EDGE has been surprisingly fast, but it is a long way from a real Wifi connection.

I had the same issue.

This is what I did... Delete the network from your iPhone's wifi settings by clicking on that blue arrow icon on the right of the network name. Then click on forget this network. Go to your wireless router and perform a restart. Turn off the iPhone and turn it back on. Go back to the wifi settings and reselect your network and you should be good.

Essentially restart both devices and add the iPhone as a new connection.

Also turn on airplane mode for atleast 15 secs then turn it off then retry. I heard that worsk.

Yep worked for me too

Told the iPhone to Forget The Network, then reconnected and specified "WEP ascii or hex" instead of "WEP password" for the password.

Now, everything seems to be fine.

Thank you so much. That fixed my problem. I had rebooted my router, and turned off wifi on my phone numerous times trying to get it to work, but when I did everything in that order it came up no problems on the wifi.

Awesome.

On the screen where you would normally type in your WEP key

Click on WEP at the top and it will give you the option to select WEP ascii or hex

Did you reset both AND delete the wifi network from your settings?

Have you tried a hard reboot? Meaning instead of resetting your router, plug it from the power outlet, wait a few minutes and plug it back in.

I'm thinking its time to try and determine which routers those of us that can't get it to work are using. I too can get my neighbors router but not my own. I'v got an old lynksys WRT5G. Maybe its the type of router.

Honestly I'd be happy using the neighbors, but the only one that's unsecure is a crappy connection for me and it keeps disappearing.

huh. I can connect to mine, I just get no internet connectivity or whatever its called. It can' t ever get a server anywhere. It's like fake connected.

However, our routers are probably very similar, right? Both lynksys. I wonder if I set up the security on it and then used the password it would work. I don't know how to do that and I'm not sure its worth the bother tonight. Is your secured or unsecured? Maybe its an issue with unsecured routers?

As a final, final option, try a hard reset on your router, restoring it to its original factory firmware and settings.

Honestly, this is getting beyond my abilities. I usually don't suck at this kind of stuff. I'm the one of all my friends and family that everyone calls to troubleshoot the ipods, tivo's, computers etc. However, the one thing that I've never been able to figure out is my router. I can't even figure out how to set up the security-or at least I gave up after 45 minutes. I have no clue how to do a hard reset and am afraid I'd screw up what I do have working.

Here is a question everyone. I have gotten my wifi to work at my house by turning off both router and iphone then changing the hex option thing. Great it works at my house!!! But I noticed today as I tried to connect to other wifi spots thuout the day that they didnt connect. Are we gonna have to do this procedure with every single wifi connection we try to connect to? This is not good!!! That would be a deal breaker! Apple needs to do something about this and fast!!!! Phone is just not as smooth and cool without wifi.

I had a Linksys WRT54GS until yesterday. Had problems connecting it to anything that wasn't a computer (DS, Wii). Went to Best Buy and bought a $50 Buffalo. Now everything on my network works happily, including my iPhone. And I spent an hour on the phone with Apple techs over the stupid Linksys before we were both ready to pull out our hair in frustration.

ok, I set up security, redid the connect to the internet thing with hte router. Put the security key in the computer, refreshed and renewed my ip address. The computer works fine.

I reset network connections on the iphone. turned ipohone on and off. reconnected to the network. It seems to have the right ip address numbers etc. I put in the password. The first time I got it wrong and it told me I typed the wrong password but the second try seemed to work. It says its connected, but I still get the "can't find server" error message.

And now when I try to join another unsecured network in my building its telling me I can't join the network. And it will join mine, but whenit says its joined it doesn't work.

Have you tried the map or th you tube to see if those are working with the WiFi?

Ljp
07-01-2007, 06:52 PM
yes. Doesn't work. I *may* have had a connection for a few seconds, but then it was gone again. I've also subsequently tried other steps such as using the dollar sign, using the HEX whatever the other choice is instead of WEP Password. Multiple refreshes and reconnects.

I've been browsing other forums and trying the things suggested. I switched my router from Mixed B and G to G only as per Apple tech. Didn't work.

I rebooted the router again. I swear for one second I thought I had it, but then the page stopped loading halfway through and it was gone.

I can browse to my router though. ie get to the setup pages etc when I type in its IP. It's getting past my router that is the problem.

I have the same prob,

how do you know if you are in WIFI or using the EDGE?

Ljp
07-01-2007, 07:12 PM
Upper left hand corner shows an "E" when using edge and the blue concentric circle triangle thing when on WIFI.

Also, I subsequently switched to WPA security and once again, computer works, reset network connections on iphone re-connected to network, it tells me I'm connected, pages all still refuse to load.

I swear to god I have tried every single thing out there I can find that anyone said worked for them and I'm still getting nothing.

And I am totally connected to the router the whole time every time I try another thing. I can go to it on the iphone, look at various settings etc. It's still just an issue of getting past the router.

Hmm. Google works. Its the only web sight I appear to be able to connect to, but I can search a topic and links pull up. Of course non of the links work when I try to click. But this is an interesting new development.

Never mind. Now google doesn't work either.

MrTeacherMan

After doing the research on my wii, I concluded that it was possibly a conflict with the chipsets communicating, this is uncommon, but not unheard of in networking. Some people had success fixing it, others didn't. It seemed almost random. One thing that seemed to work for many people was using non-linksys firmware on their router. (which shouldn't work if it was a chipset conflict, but wtf). If you are interested in following that route, google "linksys, firmware"

All in all, I am glad I just gave up and threw $50 at it, rather than continuing to grow more frustrated and pisseed off. If we (this community) ever get a set of working steps that seem to work across the board to get the WRT54 series working, it would be worth a sticky.

BTW - The router I bought, that I know just works and works easily with iPhone, DS & Wii is the Buffalo WHR-G125 Routerhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833162017&Tpk=WHR-G125

I had that issue too today. Went to work and logged on to the public wifi and at first it didn't work. When I opened a web page and refreshed it to see if it would work, up up popped a "Terms of Use" page from the wifi server.... Just clicked accept and it worked just fine.

I figure that if the public server has a terms of use type page, we will have to go to a web page and accept it to have it run.

I can connect to my wireless ap 192.168.1.254

although my router sees the iphone.

Works perfectly with my personal laptop, work laptop, and all other wireless technology I've used here. I just want to know why I can't see all of the ip information on the iphone, like connection specific suffix, etc

Any idea what "search domains" and "client id" are about? never seen those anywhere before.

:frown:
If you have an N type router, it will not connect.
I was having a problem connecting with an N router and just got off the phone with Apple and that was the problem for me.
If it is the same with you, try calling your router manufacturer and setting your router back to a g or b setting because apparently this is the only wireless networks the iPhone can recognize at the present time.
Good Luck

What finally worked after all those hours of resetting and forgetting networks and screwing with the security on the router was to simply change the DNS on the phone and use Open DNS. Bizarre.

Had DNS problem with my home Linksys WPA2. This site helped me. http://andrewescobar.com/archive/2007/07/06/change-iphones-wi-fi-dns-settings-to-connect-to-the-internet/

Basically, you just use a static public DNS server instead of your router's.

I do this stuff for a living and it took me an hour to get my Iphone working on my home network. A little disappointing but it's a pretty cool toy so far.

I did the forget network/restart router/phone off/on/ and selected the network again with the ascii password and it works now. It seemed to be working before, but when I tried to access the internet it would switch to EDGE.

I'm so glad I found this website...what a saver. Another problem solved! Now on to the others!

Thank you!

i fixed my wifi problem! finally! i changed the setting on the iphone to the wep ascii hex thingy, for the password typed in the code on the bottom of my router, and holy **** it worked! This is after talking to my ISP and an iphone guy this morning and neither one could help me.:laugh2:

I don't see where there is any wep ascii thingy????

Have tried all the other stuff for Linksys??

Where is the "password typed in the code" on the bottom? This thing has number all over the bottom-PLEASE BE SPECIFIC.

On the screen where you would normally type in your WEP key

Click on WEP at the top and it will give you the option to select WEP ascii or hex

I changed to WEP ascii or hex and now I don't lose the Wi-FI icon anymore. BUT I still can't go to a website.. I just says.. Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server

you need to input the DNS settings that your ISP uses into your iPhone

The DNS servers allow your iPhone to 'look up' webpages.

Ask your ISP for their DNS server address, then go into your iPhone wi-fi set-up and put them in where requested.

:frown:

First, turn of encryption and see if you can connect. If this works, you need to change from WEP to WPA. The problem is the difficulty putting in the 26 or 64 characters without an error on the iPhone. I just used 26 "1s"

you guys are awesome. i thought that i was hooked up to wifi since the phone is supposed to automatically switch, but i wasn't. i was having the same problem as everyone else it seems. i did exactly what all you guys said about the wep hex thing and it works well now. i was like "damn edge and wifi are running at the same speed, this sucks". thanks yall

I had to do it this way also..... discovered the reason is the iphone is doing auto-capitalization on your entered password... rendering it invalid.

if you need to enter a password (had same issue on a web site), turn off auto-cap until you are done.

After messing with the network connection for hours and reading every post on this subject on the forum and suspecting that the passcode was being capitalized without my knowledge or consent. I turned off the autocap(Settings-General-Keyboard) and reinput that ridiculously long code and bingo immediate connection with no dropout or change to Edge. It would be nice if there were a show characters option so you can see what you are typing rendering the whole point moot. I wonder how many others who have suffered with this problem, spent money, and generally torn their hair out overlooked this simple point. Considering there are eight pages of posts on this subject(when this was written), a simple soltion would have been greatly appreciated.

Told the iPhone to Forget The Network, then reconnected and specified "WEP ascii or hex" instead of "WEP password" for the password.

Now, everything seems to be fine.

the phone tells me it is connected to my network but i see the E (EDGE) symbol and some times y switches to my home network symbol. The only way it works perfect is if i set up the router with no password. I got the 8bg iphone and there is no option for hex or ascii. It connects fine to the network at least it does have the check mark next to it. Since it works without password it is not a compatibility problem. I've tried everithing possible and nothing work.
sugestions anyone ??

ok. it is frustrating but i did it. And since this may help some of you out there here is exactly what i did.

My router: NETGEAR WPN824
iPHONE : 8GB
Wireless security : WEP
Authentication type : Auto
Encryption strnegth : 64bits
Key : 1
Network Channel : 6
Mode : 108mbps

First i reset all the network setup in the iPhone. Then i set the router up with NO wireless security. Without security, the iPhone connects inmediatlly to my network. On the iphone i went to Settings-> Wi-fi and on my network setup and i verified that all the info under DCHP, BOOTP, STATIC were filled in, as they did, then i changed everything to MANUAL, so the information already there does not change after i change the wireless security back to WEP on my router, then i went to my router and set the wireless security as stated before. Then on the iPhone try to connect using the Key #1 as password and BINGO ! I am CONNECTED to my network and using my home internet connection as soon as i walk into my house. Good Luck to all

Thanks!!! This didn't work for me until I did it in the exact order!! But gtg now.:laugh2:

at work we have an unsecured wireless network and i am having trouble accessing it.
i go to settings->wifi and then choose the netwrok. it comes up with a tick next it.
when i hit the arrow next to it all the fields are blank...
how do the ip adress/subnet mask/router/dns fields get populated?

also what is the diff between dhcp/bootp/static?

some one else here has an ipod touch (and wifi works perfectly)and i copied their settings for ip/subnet/router and dns - i then connect to wifi but when i hit safari it says no server found....

Hello 4bp,
I had the same problem and now it is solved.
I bought my iphone and someone unlock it for me. AT home i have a wireless internet router and it is not connecting. everywhere else it is working fine.
What you need to do is to open settings, go to airplane mode and make it "on" so it shuts your GSM sim and wireless also. then after maybe 5 seconds make airplane mode "off" and leave the wireless to detect the signal by itself.
try safari now, it should work.

I hope when they unlocked your phone, the wireless settings were damaged but I think you said it is working in a place other than your office, right?
let me know what happens and maybe i could help again, i will check for you.

Thatīs my experience.....maybe for someone it will work diferently.
I tried everything written in the site and nothing worked.
I found out that is not the wi fi that is not working, the problem is the connection to the internet. The signal is good, I can connect via SFTP to the device and if I ping* the IP it is responding, so the connection with the router is Ok (from what I read this is the case everyone is facing).
So I changed the DNS# that is automaticly given either the IP address of your router or a public DNS server. This worked perfectly, no need to worry about rebooting or changing the wireless security. This way you can configure your wireless network anyway you want and it will still work.
Well, again this worked like a charm to me and the bright side is you can use it in any public wireless network, without having to do anything else.
Hope it works for you.;)

* In windows go to start => run => type cmd => when the window opens type ping "your ipod or iphone ip adress". If it responds itīs because your router and your computer is connecting to your device, so the wireless is working perfectly

# To change the DNS in your Itouch or Iphone click in settings=>wi-fi => click on the arrow at the right of your connection => change the DNS

You have to change your DNS to either your routerīs adress or a public DNS http://theos.in/windows-xp/free-fast-public-dns-server-list/ .
My reply above explain it in details how to do it.

Click on WEP at the top and it will give you the option to select WEP ascii or hex

Appears everyone is having their iphone hooked up on their w-fi and of course I have read all your correspondences of wi-fi problems and solutions to them, however, I have tried most of them and to no avail.

See , i have a sky router, my computers are connected and tested my iphone to network without password and works perfect, soon as I ressume password protection and type the WEP key in, wi-fi shows connected but can't access websited etc. (on 1.1.4 by the way)

Ay out there with detailed instructions????

For whatever it's worth, I get wifi problem on my home network. iPhone works fine for weeks, then I get "Safari can't connect" out of nowhere. My Airport station is connected to a Comcast router. The airport signal is active, other computers are online, but my iPhone isn't. The only thing that predictably works for me is to reset the router and restart iPhone. It feels a little bit like voodoo medicine since I can't explain why it works.

I have a similar problem. Over the weekend, my iPhone WiFi started acting flaky. Although I had full WiFi signal strength, my email application would hang on connecting to server. I also noticed that sending pictures to iRovr would fail and I would get an unable to connect to the outgoing mail server. Finally, I noticed that Safari web pages would not load; they would start, but hang up.

I tried resetting, restoring, forgetting network connections, restarting my router, use the public library's WiFi, and now the same at my hotel.

What is really odd is if I hit the stop webpage loading and refresh icons several times concurrently, the page may load.

My iPhone is not jail broken. Again, this problem just started out of the blue this past weekend.

Is this a hardware problem?

Hi all, my iPhone is in the same situation. It can connect to my home wifi, but Safari cannot open any pages. :(

Tried all solutions. My PC can ping the iPhone and it responds, but whether the phone can reach Internet is unknown. :(

I don't know a restore of firmware to 1.1.4 will fix the issue or not.

Btw, are there any chance to make the phone become a brick when restoring firmware?

PROBLEM SOLVED. The reason is that my DNS setting on the iPhone is not 100% properly set. My wireless configuration on my laptop shows that DNS server addresses are 192.168.1.254, 192.168.1.11. The .11 is the actual DNS provider, and the .254 is the address of the ADSL modem. On my laptop, the OS will try these two addresses consequently. But in iPhone, it automatically uses the .254 as its default DNS (although it lists the two addresses consequently in the DNS field). It does not even test the .11 after a while since if it uses the .11, I can browse the webpages for sure. That is the reason my wireless on the iPhone connected but I cannot browse any webpages.

I figured out the issue when trying to use my PC as a host that provides Internet access for my iPhone by using the Internet Connection Sharing of Windows Vista.

So, the solution to all of who are having the same issues like me is that to check the DNS server settings carefully. Of course, there may be other reasons. But it would be worth to have an eye on those DNS. Be sure that only ONE DNS address is provided to the iPhone. I think this is to force the iPhone to use that DNS address. Here is my way to do it:
- I have the iPhone connect to the wifi using default DHCP query.
- After that, I change the wifi setting in the iPhone to use the Static mode (DHCP, BootP, and Static modes for each wifi connection, remember?). Then fix the DNS address to a suitable address. The problem is solved. ^.^

Another recommendation from me is that you should try the Internet Connection Sharing feature of Windows first. If the iPhone can connect to the laptop via wireless, and the laptop's wired connection is shared by Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) under Windows Vista (in my case), and if your laptop's Internet is oke, then your iPhone's wifi connection should be ok. When using this method, your laptop's wireless adapter will gain the IP 192.168.0.1 (this is automatically assigned by Windows when using ICS). Your iPhone therefore will get a 192.168.0.x IP when connecting to the laptop in an ad-hoc connection. The gateway and the DNS setting of your iPhone is also 192.168.0.x. Hence, you will see, if your iPhone can browse webpages in this sharing mode, and it cannot browse if connects directly to the router, then the problem should be router setting. DNS, default gateway, etc may be the cause.

Hope this help!
Happy wifi-ing ^.^

I have a wifi problem too. I have read a few stuff you people said in here but my phone is something different or maybe it's just me.
1. I can't connect to my wireless wifi network.
2. I can't do the thing Forget the network. If I go into my network it's going to Ip Address( DHCP, BootP and Static), if I press on the network it's asking for password. I do the password and says "Unable to join.."
3. I can't find wep ascii and hex or whatever, I only have none, wep, wap, wap2 as options if I try Other network and put mine manually in, the same name. I don't know where to go for that.

Any ideas as in what to do step by step?
It's an unlocked Iphone 8gb, 1.1.4 firmware, T Mobile is the carrier, Netgear is the wireless router, security option is wpa-psk(tkip), password is numbers only.

Came across this thread in my quest to fix my same problem and thought I'd post a fix for those in the same situation...

LINKSYS router users - Install the latest firmware upgrade. I believe the old Linksys firmware was having trouble with the DHCP when connecting certain devices. Upgraded my firmware and was connected in seconds.

May also work for other brands of routers. Firmware upgrade is a good thing to try if you're having difficulty with specific routers.

short and sweet (lets hope) Go to this web site listed at the bottom of the post and hit get started follow the instructions and you should be set if this is a router issue. you first need to forget your current connection then power off wifi,

Wierd!!!

I typed in the exact same DNS server number from my iMac to my iPhone 3G, which i had done a bit of search before for knowing why the internet was really slow on my iMac Alum.

And These 2 DNS servers numbers helped with the internet speed. This is where you go preference>Network>Airport)Advanced, and under DNS Tab.
where you can add DNS servers to it, I did that to improved my browsing speed.

Here are the codes, it seems to help with everyone's iMac
208.67.220.220
208.67.220.222

And only 2 days ago, i have experienced exact the same problem as you guys facing with my White iPhone 3G. Tried everything just none of those works. tried to search down what the problem was until just then i got it all working again just tried to type in the DNS servers code into my iPhone. and Tada, WORKS!!!!!

Give it a try if you are still experiencing the same problem
Go Setting>Wi-Fi>the little arrow on the right with your Connected Network obviously>DHCP>and re-typed in 208.67.220.220 under DNS (Which is what i exactly did) don't know if 208.67.220.222 works>Home Button> Safari>and Surprised!!!!!!

PROBLEM SOLVED. The reason is that my DNS setting on the iPhone is not 100% properly set.

Eureka, that helped me solve my problem. My DHCP server was pushing two DNS values, but the first DNS's IP address was no longer valid. PC's happily try both DNS's until it finds a valid DNS server, but the iPhone only seemed to try the first DNS server then give up. I simply removed the first DNS IP address from my DHCP server and now I have a working WiFi connection from my iPhone 3G.

Thanks for the help, Steve.

I'm a noob at computers n stuff so dont go crazy on me if I didnt know something obvious...heres my story, hope I can get some help:

So I got my Iphone 3G yesterday, and the first thing I tried was the wifi(I cant afford the killer data plan). I went into the wifi menu and joined my own network at home. The strength signal was max so I opened up safari and tried to load. I got "safari cant open the page because it is not connected to the internet". I have a wifi adress under the general>about, and I have a Siemens Gigaset-SE567 modem.

Then I tried google on my PC to look for solutions. Unfortunately the only solution I could follow was the "reset both devices and connect again"(I dont really know all the technical WEP stuff).

My question is, is there something obvious or technical I didnt do, or do I have to go buy one of those wireless routers from TigerDirect?

Oh yeh, if it helps, on my Command screen, it says DHCP is disabled. I may be able to dig up more information if it helps. Thanks for any help.

what kind of IP number do you see in WiFi settings?? if it is 169.whatever, you do not have a valid address.....especially since you say DHCP is off.

when the device cannot get a valid IP, it uses one in the 169.x.x.x range which odes not allow any data access.

Oh crud, the IP adress in my network is indeed 169.x.x.x. Is there anyway I can fix this?

EDIT: on my modem's page it says DHCP is enabled for one client on the local network, dont know if that helps in solving the problem.

turn on your DHCP or assign the iphone a fixed IP from your address range and enter it into the iphone settings for your WiFi.

If the WiFi is security enabled, you may not be able to connect without either providing a key, or having an approved MAC. I had problems with my V1 iPhone and my Netgear wireless router when I tried keeping my SSID hidden and having to use security encryption. After keeping the SSID visible, but filtering by MAC address, I've had no problems since.

Keep in mind as well, that some WiFi connections such as that at hotels, require you to "sign in" before you can use the connection for data traffic.

Here's how to fix that issue. First run cmd on your desktop machine where the internet connection is coming from. Type ipconfig/all then hit enter. Note the DNS number that will come up (There are going to be many other numbers, you just need the DNS).

1- I have the iPhone connect to the wifi using default DHCP query.
2- After that, change the wifi setting in the iPhone to use the Static mode (DHCP, BootP, and Static modes for each wifi connection)
3-Then fix the DNS address to the DNS address we obtained before.

The problem is solved.

ok. it is frustrating but i did it.

Thanks so much! A slightly modified version of this was the ONLY thing that solved my problem after many other attempts. Too bad it took so many hours to find it! Sadly, swtiching the wifi settings to manual didn't work for me.

My router was set up with: 128bit WEP-manual encryption, no MAC approval needed. I was never able to get the Hex/ascii security option so couldn't take that route. Resetting the router and the iphone, turning Wifi on and off, switching to airplane mode and back, inputting the DNS from my router settings, on and on... nothing worked.

Here's what did work: chose option to "forget this network" under iPhone's Settings>Wifi>my network; turned off Wifi; put iPhone to sleep; turned off the wireless security on the router and restarted it. Restarted iPhone; turned on Wifi; selected my network. After several seconds, the iPhone's network settings were completely and automatically assigned with correct IP address and correct Subnet Mask (now matching my router settings, unlike before), filled in router setting, and filled in DNS server address!! Next, I reset the security on my router to WPA-PSK and reset the router. When the iPhone asked for the password to connect to my network, I used the WPA-PSK Key I'd set on the router.

And, voila! Stable Wifi connection after HOURS and HOURS of angst and frustration. No defaulting back to Edge. Just stable, FAST Wifi connection to the internet! Now this is the iPhone I paid for!!

The problem seems to be the WEP security. Try turning off security then resetting router. Wifi should now work on the iPhone. Then go back into router settings and re-enable security as WPA instead.

Check the IP address and make sure it doesn't begin with 169. I hear that is a dummy IP address. I was having this issue and with my at&t uverse router, the System Password and the WEP key are different. I was using the password and was able to temporarily connect to the wifi, but the 3g was overriding it because of the dummy IP address. When I used the WEP key, it put in the correct IP address and now works correctly.

I have tried all of the suggestions in this thread and nothing works for me.

My phone has a data ip address of 10.xx.xx.xx and it connects to the WiFi network. I know it is connected to my network because Air Sharing works. However, when I try to browse the internet Safari says it can't find the internet. I also can't check my email or access iTunes/AppStore. I have no idea how to fix it. This all started about 3 days ago when my phone started having intermittent wifi drops and now it is completely messed up.

I've tried 2 different routers and the phone still has a problem. I don't think its the router because I have a wireless computer in the other room and that connects and browses the internet perfectly fine. It's iPhone that has the problem. I don't understand how it can connect to the local network and show that it has an ip address from the DHCP server, but not be able to browse the internet.

I'm so frustrated (been battling this for 2 days now), if someone can please help me out I will be greatful. :)

The router is secured using WEP. I also tried changing it to WPA because I read that sometimes fixes it, but it didn't fix anything. The DNS IP in the Wifi options is the same as my router ip (192.168.2.1). I see the 10.x.x.x address in the SBSettings drop down. I've tried disabling 3G and Edge and just running off of Wifi and it still obtains an IP so I know that the address isn't from 3G and Edge. All of my other wireless PC's (laptop and another desktop) all work fine over wifi using this router so I don't understand what the problem is with the iPhone.

I actually got it to work last night for about 30 minutes and then I let my phone sit for a while and I came back and it stopped working again. The way i got it to work was by deleting the DNS IP and then having it reconnect and it worked, but I tried doing that again and it won't work again.

[EDIT]

I was messing with it. I turned off Wifi, Edge, and 3G and then only enabled Wifi and it got an IP and Safari started working. Then I enabled Edge and Wifi was still working. Its going strong right now. However, I bet when the phone goes to sleep and drops back to Edge and then has to reconnect to Wifi it'll stop working. It's almost like the phone enables Wifi but refuses to update the IP, like its using the Edge/3G ip with Wifi and it isn't working.

I assume SBSettings has something to do with Summerboard??

if you use iphone settings, Wifi, do you see your network??? Is it connected??? if so, if you press the blue > and go to the network settings, what are the IP and gateway and DNS?

10.x.x.x is usually only used by businesses and AT&T for EDGE/3G connections. Most residential routers would use something like 192.168.x.x (such as 192.168.1.1 common on LINKSYS routers).

WEP is a problem for many iPhone users. WPA/WPA2 is usually a better choice.

Have you tried it with NO security to see if it makes any difference???

SBSettings is just a toggle app that lists some other information as well: (http://thebigboss.org/2008/10/19/the-future-of-bossprefs/)

Yep I tried it without security and it did nothing. Same thing. Its connected right now I turned 3G and Edge off and it got an IP from my router and safari started working. When I hit the blue button for Wifi it lists my router information. IP Address: 192.168.2.5 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 router 192.168.2.1 and same for the DNS. Its getting an IP and working right now, but it seems like when the phone goes to sleep it drops the wifi, and then when I unlock and restarts the Wifi it doesn't update with the Wifi IP and keeps trying to use the Edge IP with Wifi which causes the internet to not work.

[EDIT]

I just had the phone go to sleep and then wake up back and reconnect to Wifi and Safari is working! I think the phone just needed all of the radios (3g, wifi, and edge) rebooted so to speak. Who knows how long this will last though. :(

when the iphone goes to "sleep" (screen off), WiFi is turned off. So, when you turn on the screen, it should go through the same procedure when it detects and uses a Wifi access point. There were issues in previous firmware releases where this did not work right. Are you running the latest firmware (2.2)??

Yeah running 2.2. I updated to 2.2 about a week after it came out and Wifi has been working flawlessly for me, something happened about 3 days ago though that caused it to go crazy on me and I'm not sure what.

Its working for me right now. I'm guessing the wireless radios were conflicting with each other or something and they just needed to be shut off and turned back on. Who knows, but its working right now. I had the phone go to sleep and then I woke it up twice and it still works. The Edge icon changed to Wifi and the internet is working.

Hopefully this isn't a temporary thing.

I got mine working as well. My router configuration is a little complicated and I don't think my router was giving out IP addresses properly. I have Verizon FiOS and they make you use their crappy Actiontec router so in order to bypass it I was bridging the coax and the wan connection on the actiontec and having it not do the DHCP.

So basically, the Actiontec gives my Netgear WGR614L router which is running DD-WRT internet which gives internet to all of my computers, and back to the Actiontec which gives internet to my Verizon FiOS TV boxes (for the tv guide, widgets, on demand etc). It's like a loop of sorts.

I redid the ENTIRE configuration today and now my phone connects to my WiFi quickly and gets an IP. All of my TV boxes (4) and computers (3) work as well. I'm still not sure what I changed or fixed to make this work, but it is working flawlessly right now. Although I feel like if I breathe on it the wrong way it is going to stop working. :D

I had the same exact problem - after waking up from sleep problem connecting to WIFI - and msg's in Safari and Email - cannot connect to 3G data network - cant connect to imap.gmail.com msg in email app.

I tried what someone earlier suggested - seems to work for now.

Go into your wifi setting for the network in question.

After renwing the lease - swtich to static ip and change the DNS IP to the one that connects your network to the interenet (In my case the 3com IP adress 192.168.1.2 - of course varies depending on your configuration).

Delete the other values appearing in that field leaving only the IP of the router/computer that is the actual gateway to the internet.

Hope it helps for you - thanks to the people posting that solution earlier in the thread.

I'm still checking if it does solve the problem (did it myself only 20 mins ago.. :P )

I have a problem that doesn't seem to be covered in this thread anywhere and I was wondering if someone out there might have some insight. I have never had problems getting my iphone to connect to wifi in my home or at hotspots, but now I am trying to get it to connect to a wireless network that is being broadcasted by my laptop that is wired. I don't have a router, and therefore all of the router advice is irrelevent to me. It seems that allowing my vista laptop to be used as a wireless router is a fairly unknown and underutilized feature of vista, and there is not a whole lot of good info on the web about it. I set up my network using instructions from this site.

I know the network is working because I had my friend log onto it with his laptop and everything worked fine. My iphone discovers the wireless network, and it says it connects with full strength, but the icon never changes from 3g to wifi.

Any help I could get on this issue would be fantastic.

AHarp, sounds like you might have a defective WiFi card. You need to test it at someone elses home network or a free hotspot and see if the problem still happens. If it does, make that appointment with Apple.
IF it doesn't, then you are either not getting a valid IP address from your PC or something else is interfering.
go into settings, wifi, and click the blue arrow to the far right of the connection. Look at your IP address. If it starts with something like 169....then you are not getting an IP address.

Hawk,

When I open up the information about the wifi network on my iphone by touching the blue arrow, the page does not have any information. All the fields are blank, including the one for the IP adress. I have no idea what this means.

I also seriously doubt that there is anything wrong with my iPhone's wifi card as I never had trouble connecting to any other wifi network. Also, my friend tested to see if he could use the wifi being broadcasted from my laptop and he had the same problem. The ipod said he was connected to wifi, but then the internet did not work.

Well, then that obviously points directly at your laptop setup. The fact that your iPhone connects just means it has established a radio communication link with the laptop, which is great, but unless the laptop is issuing IP addresses, nothing more than the connection is ever going to take place.
I think you need to clear out the settings that you made on the laptop for an ad-hoc network, and start over. Maybe try someone elses instructions other than the ones you posted the link for.
I unforunately cannot help you further as I have avoided Vista like the plague since it first came out. I'm still not even sure about Windows 7.

After 5 months without wifi on my iphone ever since I used ziphone to unlock my iphone, I finally figuered it out and fix it, here is what I did in summary after many different attempts(tried every solution from online post), here is my 2009 stimulus package for my iphone:
1. I restored to 2.2.1(5H11) firmware and use Quickpwn to unlock it.
2. wifi still not connecting correctly? I reset the "network settings" on iphone, if not work, I set my wireless router to no encryption, then reset iphone "network seetings" again and again until it sticks to wifi connection. First it didn't stick 100%, it was like on and off periodically.
3. Goto "Cydia" downloaded tool call "BossPrefs"
4. Goto app "BossPrefs" turn off the "edge" and keep the wifi. At current stage the wifi still drop connection periodically.
5. Restart wireless router(no encryption still) and reset my iphone "network settings". Go to "BossPrefs" to turn off edge again and keep the wifi because "BossPrefs" reset itself. Now I saw the connection persists.
6. Restart my wifi wireless router and set it to wpa or wpa2 encryption.
7. Reset my iphone "network settings" again(it's a pain but it helps) and type in the password for wifi and a miracle happened, wifi sticks, no more dropped connections, I can even use youtube on my iphone again and leave my itouch collecting dust.
8. I then go to iphone "Cydia" and downloaded half of the ring tone on my iphone and tried it out...awesome!

Well, after extensive work by myself, apple and friends ... Apple decided my iPhone's wifi was bad. I walked into the store to exchange it for a new one and the got it to work on their test wifi so I was told sorry but store policy was it had to fail theirs. I drove an employee thru the parking lot by Starbucks a d McDonalds where it failed to connect ! On returning, they replaced my fone! The first attempt to connect at home succeded and have had 0 issues since!

Im having similar problems. Ive tried my wifi on about 3 different networks, with all the same result. It says its connected to that network, with even the wifi logo for a few seconds, then it automatically goes to Edge. Now my question is this....at this point, if I had to guess I would say its the wifi card in the phone. If this is the case, does anyone have any idea what it might run me to take it to an Apple Store and have them replace it? The bad news is I think my warranty is up. Another bad thing is the closest Apple Store is about 3 hours away! Any thoughts?

Yep worked for me too

Told the iPhone to Forget The Network, then reconnected and specified "WEP ascii or hex" instead of "WEP password" for the password.

Now, everything seems to be fine.

HELP!!! Please! I believe this solution will solve my problem too, but I can't find the option to switch from WEP to WEP ACII! When it asks me for my password, there's no menu to select any WEP ACII at al. Im check under settings, then wi-fi, but there is no option for me to switch, I must be doing something wrong. Please help, I have not been able to use Safari or Mail for months and I'm fed up of it. If I can't fix this prob by tmrw, then i'm selling my iphone, b/c the wi-fi was like the main reason I got this phone, and I really don't want to sell it b/c of this stupid reason. Please help!

I had the same problem, and i upgraded my router's firmware, and all problems are gone, try that and see if it solves your problem.

thevalar, you should try too
