excuse my ignorance on this subject but i need some advice before i go abroad. obviously data roaming costs are sky high when using the iphone in a foreign land (and the iphone comes with this option already turned off) but my concern is with the wifi connection. if my data roaming is turned off but i can connect to someones wifi connection and run the internet of that what, if any costs do i incur? sorry if this is a simple answer to a simple question but i thought you guys would help me out! ill be heading to china/japan this summer and wondered how this would affect my use of the phone if i wanted to surf the net.....cheers!!

Yes
-Wi-Fi is free :)

Are you asking. . .That your kinda worried the iPhone might try to connect to a edge signal while in China/Japan.

I know Most if not all of Japan uses 3G and are soon about to upgrade to 4G so I wouldnt be surpreised if the iPhone said "no (data)service available" while their :gasp:

Yes sir you are correct :) Turn data roaming off
-With the iphone you can use either Wi-Fi which is free either in your home network or at a Wi-Fi Hotspots (like coffee shops, hotels, airports, and or restaurants).
-I'd also suggest calling AT&T before you leave. They can make sure you're account is on an international calling plan so you don't get screwed by super high rates.

PDS has you covered. And providing that the owner of it hasn't locked the router, WiFi is free to the public.
