I bought a iPhone today but when I tried to activate it iTunes says "iPhone Activations are Unavailable at this time" Does this mean that they are no longer activating iPhones thru iTunes or is it just temporarily down?:embarrassed:

When I got mine it took me a few trys, you may want to do what JJ said. I called AT&T who told me to take it to an At&t store but eventually the website (itunes) let me do it.

Well I remember having problems before when getting to the actual activation portion of the process. This seems different though, the error message comes up as soon as I connect my iPhone.

Take it to an At&t store if you have one close by tomorrow, I am sure they can help, maybe it's the phone. Did you get it at Apple or At&t??

I know it's annoying, but I'll bet anything that it's temporary. Give it 6-12 hours.

Wait. Whyd you buy an iPhone today? Are you planning on returning it for the iPhone 3G?
DUKEL

Well its a new day and still no activations are allowed. Maybe the iTunes activations are no more.

Because I want to have one on my acct. so I will still be eligible for the $199 pricing when the new one comes out. I had switched to a regular phone when I hear this nonsense about current iPhone customers getting the subsidized cost while other uneligible for upgrade customers(me)will have to full price. So I went out and bought a gen1 for cheap.

Well they are transferring me back & forth between att & apple.

When I called AT&T about this matter (i was planning on getting the current iPhone instead of 3G because i dont need the new features nor do i want to pay $10 more a month) the lady told me you should be able to activate them until July 11th and you will be grandfathered in for $20 a month even though the new iPhone 3g will be $30. So im not really sure why its not working online. When i called they told me everything should be working fine.

Well after being transferred back & forth between at&t and apple and they both told me activations were not down and it was a problem with my sim, I decided to call apple one more time and this time I get a whold different story. He consults a senior product specialist and confirms iPhone activations ARE currently experiencing issues on the server and willl be up by afternoon or tommorow morning. I guess you get a diff. story each time you call.

They probably don't really know. I would wait until tomorrow and take it to an at&t store. There you can get a new sim from them and try to activate it. IF that doesn't work, then you'll know that their activations are in fact down. I hope this isn't going to be a problem on 7/11 because I'm looking to add an iphone account on my son's number when I pass my current first gen down.

If I were you I would try to do it sooner. From what the lady told me you wont be able to activate them after the 11th. But they could just be saying that to encourage you to wait for the iPhone 3G, so who knows.

Yes!! iPhone activations are back up & running. Just connected 5mins. ago and successfully activated my iphone. Now this time I'm gonna keep the iPhone until the actual 3G phone is in my hand. I better get the good pricing too.:laugh2:

Question....can we keep the old iphone on the plan and get the new one activated in the store under the same phone number and still be billed the same rate as having just one iphone?

No. If you won't two iphones to work, then you'll need two different sim cards with two different numbers and two iphone data plans. One can be at the original iphone data plan cost, but the new iphone 3G will be at the new data plan price.

A question - did the lady happy to say what will happen when you try to activate an iPhone 2G after July 11. I have an old iPhone now that has no service and had planned on activating it next January, when my Sprint contract expires. But I keep hearing that when I do that I will have to pay $30 rate even though it only works with Edge.

AT&T and Apple still have alot of questions to answer when it comes to activation of the Gen 1s.

is re-activation the same thing as activation? What I mean is will i have a problem restoring and re-activating my 1st gen phone, (like I have done a million times), once the 3g comes out? I wouldnt think so but now you guys have me confused....

The latest info (rumor) I have seen indicated that the V1 data plan was to stay in place for now. The way it was worded could be taken as at some point the V1 data plan could be scrapped. Don't know if this means we would have to pay $30, but it did leave itself open to possible deletion of the current V1 data plan.

I read that there will still be the cheaper data plan for 2G phones. Don't ask we where, because I do not remember.

Nobody really knows how they'll have new activations of first gen iphones after 7/11. All we know so far, is that first gen users with active iphone data plans won't see any increase to the 3G prices.
