I'm sure this has been asked before and I tried searching, but did not find the answer to my question, so I am sorry if this is a re-post...
But...
I have a buddy at work that wants my iPhone when I get the iPhone 3G, he plans on going to AT&T, but is not 100% on that. Now, when AT&T activates my new iPhone, will my current phone get locked up or anything? Should I unlock it before I make the switch or will my buddy be able to unlock the phone when he decides to use it?
Any help or answers would be great!
Thanks.

he'll be able to unlock it if he wants to. Just be sure to not update to the 2.0 software before you give it to him. No one's sure quite when that will be unlockable.

totally agree, dont do the 2.0 update!
usually when a new update comes out some clever bods from somewhere in the world risk the integrity of there own iphones for the progression of others!
your always best waiting a week until somebody jailbreaks it properly!! unless your keeping your iphone stock then theres nothing to worry about!

yea- I'm thinking of doing the same thing and any advice on the easiest way to do this would be appreciated...
I just read on EIC that current v1 owners need to "physically' have their iPhone with them if they want to get the v2 at the $199 or $299 price..that doesn't sound quite right tho..regardless..I am going to get the v2 FIRST...Remove my sim card from v1..restore v1 to original settings and then attempt to unlock it and sell it on ebay..is there anything I'm missing or have in the wrong order..?
Thanks for the help..

I wouldn't sell your v1 without a SIM card... once you activate your new iphone, the v1 will be deactivated... which means the purchaser will be able to activate it using whichever method they choose (iTunes or unlocking).

It can be unlocked to work on other GSM carriers, but not CDMA like Verizon or
Sprint.
