I need UK iPhone owners with 02 and NOT jailbroken to answer me a question.

Say you go outside or down the town or something...can you use YouTube?

Everytime I try it says 'An EDGE or Wi-Fi connection is needed' or something very similar. All the videos are 00:00 in length and when you click it to watch it that is when that message comes up.

yea very common, doesnt seem like out edge is strong enough, try again when your edge icon has an E in the centre!

I hardly ever get the E in the square. Especially not just *anywhere*, I have to be in a town centre or something. Edge seems VERY rare where I live or possible England as a whole.

When you don't have the EDGE icon, you're simply getting GPRS (sssllllooooooooowwwwww).

Yes, that's what I have then. GPRS. So theres no way of getting EDGE then? It's just my area or something?

It is simply that Edge in the UK suffers from poor coverage. O2 for example have stopped upgrading their towers (a software upgrade) as they recently had a warning from OFTEL that they are not meeting their promise to introduce 3G as quickly as they should have so they are now concentrating their effort on 3G to avoid a fine! Orange Edge is better, but again you only get this stuff in town centres. Edge in the UK is old technology that is not being furthered, and when most handsets are 3G now why would they bother... google for more info but it is depressing stuff.

Thanks for the reply. It's a shame EDGE is poor over here...having YouTube anywhere would have been a great feature.

at least that's a reason for you to check out the new iphone...

Never, I don't want that plastic sh*t. Besides, will 3G replace EDGE and GPRS?

no, it's supplemental. It'll choose from whatever is available.

Well I have that already...GPRS.

right, but my point (extrapolating from scudder's UK info) is that 3G will be much more widely available to you than EDGE is... plus they are working on expanding it.

And 3g is avilable absolutely everywhere in the country?

i have no idea... I was just going by what scudder said. I'd imagine o2 has a coverage map.

EDIT: this (http://www.webmap.o2.co.uk/?Search=Search) may help.
