View Full Version : Other... e-mail providers?

I have a very personalized e-mail address with Hotmail I just can't give up. I'm stunned my full name was available as a Hotmail address, and scooped it up seconds after realizing it was available. Unfortunately, Hotmail doesn't play ball with iPhone -- unless I buy a Hotmail Live Plus account, forward the e-mail to a Gmail account (or equivalent), and give the iPhone the Gmail (or equivalent) account information.

I'm a little bummed about this. The e-mail address I have on Hotmail is great. It's so easy to tell people my full name (separated by a "dot"), and finish with, "At Hotmail dot com."

Have any of you found other e-mail providers that work with iPhone that aren't nearly as popular as Gmail, Yahoo!, .Mac, or AOL?

Not internet based email providers. Sorry.

how much would it be to upgrade your account to the live plus status? if you really like your email address, i think this is the best route for you...

i have .mac and gmail accounts and both work flawlessly for me. i have a couple of accounts associated with my web site, but i only use those for things related to my site. i don't have any experience with any email providers that would be helpful for you. but i will say that an email address that works for you and with which you've built up a history (e.g., all your friends and family already know it) can be quite valuable - i happily pay for my .mac account each year knowing that my primary use of the service is for my email account and addresses...

Almost any Internet email account can be used with the iPhone, but not with .mac or mobile me. I have four different addresses coming to my phone via push IMAP, including google, my personal domain name and a regional ISP domain name. It worked fine via pop, and now I have them all set as IMAP and it is wonderful. I would like to be able to use mobile me with them to add push of contacts and appointments, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen.

Outlook 2007 allows me to forward ALL my other email accounts (including a free hotmail account) to my gmail....

But if you use forwarding you lose the ability to reply from the email account to whom the original email was addressed. By setting them up in your phone individually you get ... options. Or did I miss something?

To push Gmail, follow the instructions HERE (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77695&topic=13294) to set it up in Gmail, then look HERE (https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77702) to set it up in your iPhone. Be sure to select OTHER as indicated, not Gmail.

Other email domains follow a similar setup, and as long as hey support IMAP you will get push email.

Well I did that all and it is not actually pushing the email. I have to refresh it so the phone checks for mail. Guess this is the only thing I can do huh?:(

Ok it's weird...The push only seems to want to work about 20% of the time. It seems to not work when I have gmail up on my desktop. Am I missing something here?
