View Full Version : Got hit by a motorcyclist, and reaping the benefits!

So my husband and I have 2 cars. A 4 runner, and my 2000 honda civic that I have had for YEARS that has about 120,000 miles on it. I mainly drive the 4 runner, and my husband drives my civic when he is not riding his bike (his daily commute is 70 miles each way, gas in bay area CA EXPENSIVE!!!). Anyways, the outside of my poor civic has been abused by many years of door dings from being parked in college parking lots. Its a good car though for commuting, and mechanically is fine.
The other day my husband was stopped in bay area traffic (in my civic) on the freeway. A greyhound bus passed him in the carpool lane, and immediately after that, a stupid motorcyclist who was trying to lane share between a bus and stopped traffic lost control and basically crashed into the side of my car. (Picture below)

Everyone was fine, the motorcyclist was lucky (and hopefully learned a lesson) but my sad car has a lot of black rubber transfer on it and a wavy door. However, it could have been a lot worse. I figure my car is probably only worth 5,000 at the most, so I am lucky that it was not totaled, as it is payed off and we would prefer not to have 2 car payments at this time. So, long story short, we were awarded 2,500 dollars to fix our car that is only worth 5,000 dollars. My dad and husband are going to buff out the door and maybe straighten the door out a little, but we are not going to pay a body shop 2,500 dollars to fix it. We are never selling it anyways, as we are going to drive it into the ground (which would make the most sense) . AND we now have 2,500 dollars! I don't have any desire to buy a 3g iphone, but I WILL be colorwaring my V1 (which some of you may know was my original intention). So thats my story! :-)

So glad no one was hurt. Some people shouldn't have the privilege of driving. I have to fight road rage everyday.
Anyway, nice you husband can fix the car and you can pocket the cash. And now you get to trick out your phone.

Thanks, I know what you mean. I do a lot of talking and cussing at people from within the car. They never hear it, and it helps with road rage! lol.
The guy is SOOO lucky. That bus could have crushed him!!! Also, my husband is lucky that his arm wasn't stuck further out the window!!!! The kicker is, that this guy didn't even have a motorcycle license. Really, its not that hard to get a motorcycle license. I know because I did it!

Did he have a helmet? You would not believe how many people I see around here riding cycles without a helmet.

Ever since i became a dad i look at all drivers differently
alot of them are wreckless!
If theyre life doesnt mean much to them then that is fine
but they better not put me or my child in harms way
because of their stupidity
I have a bat in my trunk
i dont play baseball.

dturner- He did have a helmet. Im pretty sure that since he didn't have a license, he wasn't trying to draw any extra attention to himself.
icafe- I totally understand. I don't have any children yet, but if my dog had even been in the car I would have been way more pissed. Not that I don't care about my husband, but you know, he is much bigger and has a better chance :-). Plus I love my dog like a child.

You are one of the few that has won against the insurance companies. My wifes car had a bumper ripped off while the car was parked. It was a $500 deductible and the repair was just over $1000. Months later when I went to change insurance companies, they asked about an accident we had with the car. I was shocked, since it was hardly an accident. The car was parked. Regardless, somehow the insurance companies have it checked off as an accident.
Congrats and that won't do anything to affect the longevity of that Honda. They last forever.
+1 on the avatar. Classic.

I couple months ago I was driving with my mom and little sister in my 2000 Avalon... We were stopped at a red light, and all of a sudden, we heard screeching... And then we were hit from the back... It was this biggo old van... It went in our other lane, and took off... I wanted to follow it to get thr license plate but my mom wanted me to pull over cuz my sister was freaking out. We called the police but they couldn't find the guy... My moms insurance paid us 1,000 for me and her cuz our backs were all messed up but thAnkfully my little sister washy hurt. The whole back of our car was smashed in. They had us pay the 500 deductable but the work done to the car cost 5,000 so it wasn't too bad... :)

Ah-HA! So this is where the colorware decision stems from? Civics are such good cars. I had two in college I put over 200,000 miles on one before I totaled it. The next one didn't last long...but that wasn't the Civic's fault.

I think with all the good things I'm hearing about Honda civics, or hondas in general, It become my first car, soon to be a college student I cant afford a car thats going to total over my 4-5 years of college in maintenance and insurance fees lol! How about those Hybrids I'm hearing about?
Glad everyone made it out alive and congrats on the 2500 bucks! Through the years several of our cars have been hit and/or dented and most of the time I can manage to "adjust" them back in place therefore pocketing the insurance money too. Although scary at some times, it's nice to have a little change fall from the sky due to someone else's idiocy.:tounge:
@icafe, I hear ya on that one bro about your child. My whole life has changed in the past 3 years and I have a whole new perspective on things around me. I often look back on some of the stupid things I did as a teen around other people in traffic and think "Yea, I'd prolly of wooped my ass too!"
It's amazing how impatient people can be on the road with hundreds of others around them or simply on a back country road with just 1 or 2, these people think they are *special* and they shouldn't have to wait like others or the rules don't apply to 'them'. I for one, go outta my way to piss these people off :tounge:, not with the fam in the car of course.
So what colorware you gonna get kelley?!

Thanks! It is nice to have a little extra cash. I am still trying to decide on the colorware issue. It is so hard!!!! I want to send it off tomorrow, so I will have to make my decision by then. Maybe I will keep it a secret and post pics when I get it back
