As you may know (http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/iphone-3g-will-have-to-be-activated-in-store/), iPhone 3G will be required to be activated in store from now.
An AP report (http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/att-to-penalize-iphones-not-activated-within-30-days/) says that ATT will be penalizing iPhone users that haven't activated their phone within 30 days.
We don't know yet what the penalty will be but man, that sux! If I pay for a phone I should be able to do whatever I want with it!

I don't understand... the buyer will have to activate in store. They'll be walking home with an activated phone no matter what, so how could anyone be penalized.

No idea! It's still confusing to me too. I guess ATT is confused also.. We'll figure it out soon

They're locking down on unlockers. That's all there is to it.

So this policy thing is AT&T's and Apple agreed to it? ...because the only benefit of this is for AT&T.

The benefit for Apple is to limit iPhones unlocking

Wouldnt that be a benefit to AT&T? not Apple. The point of unlocking the phone is to be able to use it on different networks. Apple doesnt make money off of people using AT&T for their iPhones...do they?

It's a benefit to both. When iPhones are with AT&T, Apple gets a cut. When they're with T-Mobile, Apple doesn't get anything.

I think what this is referring to is the memo ATT managers received stated in part:
AT&T and Apple stores “unbrick” the iPhone 3G at time of purchase, but for some reason if that doesn’t happen, you’ll be required to use iTunes at home.
So if someone had to take the phone home, it has to be activated within 30 days.
