I'm in NC....noticed some people from GA have been endlessly waiting on the fabled activation email....anyone else in the southeast having the same problem? Also noticed that at least one poster (JP-something) finally got theirs activated....if you're reading....what was your wait time? Same goes for anyone else in the region...how long did you wait?

P.S. Seems to be affecting existing customers mostly....interested in hearing from those folks....

in COla, SC -- got the 24 hr wait email and a second email strange just said to expect another email to say when it would activate.

and for now I'm dead in the water. The phone won't do anything but turn on to the emergency number screen -- cannot get beyond that. one call to one of the numbers offerred no answers or help. On hold with another number now.

Looks like with the server outage during sales time at ATT and took nearly 2 hrs at store ( was 30th on line), ATT wasn't quite ready.

Cola-town....go Game****s.....yeah, the store up here took the server hit as well. They were breaking out the old school receipt books when they finally came back up. I was number 13 in line....lucky number 13 it seems.

I am in New Jersey..

It has been 4 hours since I began the activation process..

I am an current customer of Cingular/AT&T and I was porting one of my existing numbers.

I had a lot of trouble getting through the initial screen, but after 2 hours and a couple of phone calls I got past that.

Then they deativated my current cell phone and I got the e-mail stating it would take additional time to complete.

At this point it has been over 2 hours since I got that e-mail and I still haven't heard anything.

I am in Southern New Jersey.

I'm near Huntington WV and I waited about 15 minutes until I could call out and about 2.5 hours until I was fully functional. I can now send and receive calls, email, everything. Woo Hoo!!!!! My husband says the sound on the other end is great. He said "It's like you're in the next room"... I was, but that's not the point. The sound is great, at least from one AT&T phone to another.

I think I share Mandy's sentiment here....I've hit the "Send/Receive" button on my email at least a thousand times! But I guess there's hope....a couple three-hour-waiters rogering up....so hopefully the end is near. (still like to know what to expect when it finally activates though)

The way mine happened was I did the thing on iTunes and it said it was in the process of activating. I goofed around on the internet for a little while and then got an email that said this:

Congratulations, AT&T is now transferring your existing mobile number to this iPhone.

Your iPhone mobile number will be:

123-456-7890 (Ha Ha, I changed this so you guys wouldn't get my REAL number)

Your iPhone may now make outgoing calls but will be unable to receive calls on your existing mobile number until the transfer is complete.

You will receive an email confirmation once your mobile number transfer is complete. If you have not done so already, please connect your iPhone to your computer now to complete this activation (or click here if your iPhone is already connected).

---Then a while later I got this email

Congratulations, AT&T has successfully transferred your existing mobile number.

Your iPhone mobile number is:

123-456-7890

After that I was able to do everything.

My first attempt to activate failed since I have a government discount on my current at&t account. I was on hold for the business unit to get the discount temporarily removed so I could replace a phone on my family plan. After 58 minutes on hold I got dumped.

I just activated it like a new customer and it took about 3 minutes.

I am in Orlando, FL. I do have at&t dsl so maybe that helped since I did not have to route out to another ISP.

I'd like to know the answer to this as well. Anyone?

For my Itunes account, I used a .Mac email address which I have since LONGGGGGGGGGG gotten rid of.

Do you actually have to GET the emails or are they just notifcations? I hope they don't have links in them or anything that you have to follow through with because I won't get the emails due to the old email address.

I just talked to the ATT number (1-877-419-4500) and the guy said on his end everything looked fine, registered and everything. He put me through to the Apple people and the lady said I definately wasn't the first person with the "awaiting confirmation email" problem and that it could take up to 24 hours. She said it was because so many people are activating.
Did they really not know how many phones were made and how many people to expect to be activating on Friday night? Just get adequate servers to handle it. It's not like an unexpected surprise or something...anyway thats what i wanted to yell at her

Same here....the thrill is gone...so to speak. Submitted at 8pm....and still waiting. I'm not unrealistic and completely understand "server overload", but if this is still happning in "24 hours", I think I'm going to start seeking some retribution. Arkansas, I walked straight from the ATT store to the nearest wifi with my powerbook and activated the phone (existing att customer) took me about 2 min. Friend of mine who is 10 miles from me has hers hooked up to her mac as well (she ended up with 3!) anyway, hers has been hooked up and trying to activate for several hours... mine was the first activated in the region for sure, mine was online at 6:20PM CST. This is certainly server load, which could have been avoided. I can tell you it ROCKS! you will want to smack jobs for the ringtone issues and inability to change sms/email etc tones (only 1 tone OMG!).

I've got it synced to my exchange 2003 box, imported all of my contacts... google maps ROCK, so does browser... WIFI easy...

had one lockup already but I'm beating the beans out of this thing...

I have now waited over 5 hours for this activation email. I am switching over from Sprint. I am so mad right now at AT&T. I don't have a phone. No landline and now my cell is out bc of this crap.
The worst part is that I asked off today (Friday) so I have to work tomorrow (Saturday). If I don't walk in there with an iPhone I'll be ashamed to even go to work. I can hear it now: "haha. You waited in line alllll day long and paid a buttload of money for a phone that doesn't work".
Every time I look at my email and see no new messages I just want to scream. I was so scared I wouldn't get one.
And now, it's almost like that came true.

I know I'm being over-dramatic.
It's just seeing it sit right here next to me and I can't do anything??? wtf. This really feels like some kind of very very cruel torture or something.

New Jersey 4.75 hours.. Still waiting also. The servers are MAJORLY screwed. I let it go MANY hours and then finally called one last time figuring they would know more. They said go to bed, at this point it could be up to 24 hours. My understanding is that certain accounts can't be handled and are going into a special queue to be rectified. Or possibly certain servers could have just crashed (the ones involved with transferring existing accounts.) and they are scrambling to bring everything back on line and start processing accounts.

Shouldn't people be chiming in saying that they finally got their activation e-mail if they did?

And now, it's almost like that came true.

I know I'm being over-dramatic.
It's just seeing it sit right here next to me and I can't do anything??? wtf. This really feels like some kind of very very cruel torture or something.
I wish I lived whereever people are not having a problem. This is ridiculus.

You are exactly right. I was given the same information by Apple Technical Support and ATT Iphone Activation Support.

I am actually in Las Vegas, Nevada. This does not appear to be an East coast problem, since Los Angeles, California and a lot of the West Coast are in the same boat.

Keep us updated on everyone's status.

But, I just undid the usb cable, then put it back in and my iphone activated all by it's little self and i'm so happy.

Yea, it was supposed to be a link but I couldn't click on it. I use gmail, but gmail was just being stupid.
Since you can't read your email I wouldn't advise unplugging the iphone like i did b/c the iphone doesn't show anything new until it's ready to be FINALLY activated and you get the email.

LOL, well sh_t, I have unplugged the phone and power cycled it now about 100 times. Unfortunately, nothing has changed.

Does the phone beep at you or anything when it finally activates?

Does it even matter that I am unplugging it and power cycling it? When it is ready, I am assuming it is ready, from what you are saying?

No, it doesn't actually. With me it didn't even register that it was activated until after I got the email and couldn't click on the link I unplugged it and plugged it back in and that's when the 'iphone is activating' message came up on the iphone screen.

as for 1st impressions.... (and i'm a little biased, lol) it's awesome. So easy to use. The first thing I did was call and wake up my boyfriend. Then I programmed my most dialed numbers in (I don't use outlook or anything so I was just going to manually program my numbers in). Then I tried out the text messaging and the settings menu. the keyboard is great. I'm not 'great' at it, lol, but I can tell since it's my first time using it and there are little mistakes on my part (the keyboard fixes 99% of any mistakes) I just know that in a couple days i'll be faster than ever before typing.

I haven't even gotten on the internet yet with it.

Or synced it with my comp to put music or anything on it.

But.. only thing I did not like..

I can't get the visual voicemail to work yet. I even woke someone up and made them call me and leave a voicemail. but when I go to the voicemails all it does is dials the voicemail # and I listen to the thing like I always have on my old phones. maybe it's the area I live.. maybe we're not updated yet or something. maybe I need to sync it with my comp. or maybe it's a settings thing or something.

but that's my only complaint...

Awesome! When you say unplug it, do you mean the USB cable or were you removing the Iphone from the dock and re connecting it ?

I am not sure what the deal is with Visual Voicemail not working. If you are activated, it should work? You did not put in your own SIM card right?

only solace is seeing tons of others on many different boards in the same boat.

So much of what I heard about ATT's rep is apparently true. They were not ready and are soiling Apple's name and buzz killing the early thrill. I guess it will all get worked out but how long now is anyone's guess.

My " I told you so" friends and enemies are chirping loudly re wait, don't buy early, let others work out the problems. Even ttold my brother last night when we read that many stores would have stock today that he ought to just wait.

The guy offerred nothing of use -- just the standard excuse of so many activations blah blah blah and hopefully it would be soon. And of course the parting Have a wonderful day.

I asked about an idea I read on the Apple forums of asking them to cancel your Activation if you were trying to port a number from a different carrier and then reactivate simply as a new customer with a new number and then waiting a few days until tthings settle down and go in store and let them port the number over there. he said it worked like a charm for him anad he was up and running quickly after doing that.

So i asked the guy about doing that but noooooooooo, he said he wasn't Customer Care and only they could do that possibly. he gives me another number for Customer Care but neglects to tell me they aren't even available 24/7 on a week end like this. So after punching tons of buttons to no avail finally get message that they do not open until 9EST.

I got through to the 877 number after 52 minutes hold time. ATT had the number removed from the "Wait for activation page" because their phone bank is overwhelmed with activation problems. That is an interesting way to solve the problem.

I was told, once again, that some accounts need to be manually activated and now mine would be activated "shortly". This call, I was also told "any delay at this point is caused by I-Tunes activation at Apple, not ATT".
Interesting. I guess I call Apple next.

I asked about this approach during one of my four calls to AT&T last night in a desperate attempt to be able to activate this beautiful brick, and was told that they could do that, but that my new number would then be coded onto the SIM and porting my Verizon number (I'm activating two lines, one with porting one without) would require the purchase of a new SIM card for my iPhone :(

The long slot on the top between the power button and the headphone jack. You need a paperclip to push the little black hole and it opens up. Some other people were mad and did this, put it back into their old phones and they worked fine.

Just called the number that you guys reposted. Rep says, could take 72 hours!!! Also, when asked if I need to leave my SIM in the iphone for it to activate she said, yes that would be best. How I made that call was by putting the SIM in my old phone. So I basically asked her if I needed to be without a phone for up to 72 hours and she said yes and stressed how many people were activating at the same time. I told her that they knew how many phones were manufactured and how big of a launch this would be. She agreed. I can understand a bump in the road because there's no real world test for this, but 72 hours???

My thoughts - I used to work for Cingular/AT&T, my SIM card is working so there is nothing more Cingular/AT&T can do for me, they did their job. I blamed AT&T at first, but this is an Apple/iTunes problem for sure. From the information I got through a friend that works at AT&T currently and customer service, leave the phone plugged into iTunes, with the SIM in the phone. It's the iTunes iPhone activation that most of us are waiting on.

The ATT CC guy passed me on to the the activation guy who said canceling activation and starting over just getting a new number and porting over later would speed things up "he thought", no guarantees. he also hedged on the 24 hrs thing, said it could be longer but had not heard thte 72 hr thing floating around. Their party line seems to be we didn't anticipate the huge volume and the systems are overwhelmed. Well some higher up should take the fall for that cause I just can't believe Apple/ATT would have misled us all this badly or perhaps I'm too trusting. They had to want this thing to go as smooth as possible. They just couldn't have said to themselves -- well this is going to be a nightmare but we'll have them all hooked in and have their money and they'll whine and fuss but it will be OK. I'm working up a good mad. Like that poster of the gorilla -- "Patience my ass, I'm gonna kill Something" . I know I know its been 6-7 months what's another couple of days...... but...........

So now after previous activation guy telling me I had to talk to Customer Care to get the activation canceled now this guy says I have to talk to iPhone Activation dept so now I'm on hold again. -- all still on the same call into 1 hr 13 min on this call so far. I think they're all flying by the seat of their pants and may just leave it alone and wait, but am supposed to go on road today so can't keep connected to iMac all day waiting for Activation to kick in. Of course they said 5 min hold 12-15 min ago.

And now seeing others reporting little problemos like a growing number reporting low sound problems I'm getting more worried as I'm old and half deaf!!!!!!!

That's all I've found out for now.

However, lets put blame where blame is due. We can't really point much of a finger at Apple. Yes, they should have taken more precautions to assure that their one and only chosen carrier was up to the task. But....one can only go so far in that endeavour.

No.....the blame for this rests squarely on the doorstep and shoulders of AT&T. They didn't just drop the ball...they compleatly forgot to show up at the ballpark.

And that was the good news!

The bad news is:

They have each and every one of us on the hook with no alternate course of action short of tossing the iPhone compleatly. No matter how long they take...be it a day or a week.....AT&T will still get every cent of their money from us all for the next 2+ years. So.....very little incentive for them to get off their collective corporate asses and take any interest in the situation.

From the 'For what it's worth Department'.....they are not treating their already established client base any better. I have been a Cingular (nee' AT&T) customer for seven years and, as I said at the outset, I've been parked for 13 hours so far.

Hopefully Apple will take significant punitive steps against AT&T as retribution for their negligence. But then....Apple has already gotten their money too, haven't they???

OK after 2 hr 22 min on the phone with 4 different people, the last person was the Apple lady.

Her answers:

nice apology with the overwhelmed excuse. System is not down and is handling activations as fast as it can. Doesn't know nor understand why some activate quickly and others take so long -- makes no sense.

She would NOT recommend canceling activation and starting over with a new number. its in the system now and will happen eventually , again in less than 24 hrs. She has heard no reports predictions of 48 hrs etc.

Important at least to me -- the phone does NOT have to remain connected to the Mac and iTunes to complete the activation. She said it is the simm card that gets activated and that happens over and through the ATT network, so that for instance my question was that I am scheduled to leave on a trip today. She agreed that I may be driving down the road and the phone will suddenly spring to life.

She had no explanation for a question that is buggin me -- why have all of us stuck in the long waits not gradually seen reports of activations coming thru. it seems that we should be seeing reports of "finally after 10 hours I'm activated etc" but I have seen none of that.

She assures me that for now there is no indication of any problem with either the iTunes or the iPhone software as far as this Activation process.

She basically pleaded and apologized for patience -- that it would happen. She offered appropriate commiseration etc and was at least very nice.

That's it from here folks ---- am resolved to a simple bummed out waiting mode.

I see a class action lawsuit. When my cable company was down for 18 hours, they got sued and had to credit our accounts. This is terrible. They obvious intent here was to generate interest and show all these new features but looks like no one really dug into how much upgrading needed to be done.

Seems like Apple and ATT might be losing some of that $230 profit margin on the 8G I have been hearing about.....

After 17 hours I called Verizon and was told that ATT had not made a request to transfer my number. Next call was to ATT after 35 mins talking to rep I was told they would send another request to Verizon to transfer number and that my 24 hour clock would start over again.

I know I've waited a long time for the phone but I have now waisted 2 days of my life. I'm very tempted to just take it back and wait 4-6 weeks and try again. Guess I'll wait until tomorrow and see what happens with the second request.

i called at&t (1-877-419-4500) a few minutes ago and i went directly to a representative. She was actually pretty nice and helpful. The wait is now said to be 24-48 hours and Atlanta and New York are the worst areas. She said New York is worse, so sucks ****ers cause I live in Savannah. Basically there's just a bunch of numbers in their servers that are awaiting activation and its just going through them slowly and its a matter of time before they get to yours. She said the email will tell you to plug in your phone again but she recommended keeping it plugged in because it could just activate automatically. My account had the new SIM card updated and all that so I guess I'm just waiting my turn to activate. I wish the people who have activated recently would say what time they went through the activation process on iTunes. If someone did theirs at 9pm and just got theirs, then maybe I would know mine is up in an hour since I did mine at 10pm.

Thanks for your updates, Mandy. Is there any way to check if SIM card is active other than putting it in another phone? Not sure my old Nokia has a removeable replaceable one.

I went by the ATT store where I purchased it this afternoon. They also like so many on the phone feign surprise to hear there are problems out here. They had some numbers to call and got me on the phone with another ATT activation lady who got a bit snippy and defensive when I was complaining as she continued this BS about being so surprised at the magnitude of the activations. She also was the first one to blame Apple directly altho she went on to say it was a combination process. First in the activation Apple has tot do something and then they notify ATT that it has been done and phone is ready for number to be ported or added or whatever. the woman said Apple has been slow to notify ATT when its time for them to do their thing which is why, she claimed, that my old Alltel number is still active,

Bottom line I'd heard before ---- you must be patient and wait -- there's nothing else we can do unless you want to cancel this activation and start over which she admitted may not be any better.

I can just see a nightmare scenario of having to start over anyway after we reach the magic 24 hr mark. I see above one person of the waiting group has gotten service. Anyone else hearing from them yet. Not quite sure why all of a sudden magically after 24 hours there will be a sudden ton of activations but hopefully so.

I realize that everyone else is having this issue, but not many people are calling and stressing that issue so this is the first that customer service reps have heard of it. Just seeing if there's some special trouble-shooting that we need to do through apple.

I think everyone loves and wants to love Apple so much that they are blaming AT&T. In our cases, my point is that it seems that AT&T has done their part. It could be anybody, but I am demanding to know who and what I can do. I'm tired of "just waiting". I'm f*cking fed up.

if apple product support doesn't work, and then it isn't working at 7pm (the 24 hour mark), then i'm going to go get a new sim card. i'm going to bring my laptop in there and say "make it work". at the store I was in, they weren't preapproving credit because they wanted everyone out the door so I didn't get any type of code. I do know that if they did preapprove your credit, EVERYTHING must be entered just as they entered when you go in to activate. So of course i got excited and expected an activated iPhone when I got off work but there's no change at all. If you need a cell you can take the iPhone sim out and use it in the "old phone".

I've heard about 24-48 hours from AT&T representatives but only one of those threw in the 48 hours estimate, the others just said 24 hours. I've heard a couple people say they heard 24-72 though.

Whatever you do don't cancel the Port. I called about hour 26 and requested they stop the port from Verizon and reset my account so I could obtain a new phone number. What a bad decision that was it has left my account in a state of limbo. The port from Verizon is canceled but the ATT account thinks it's still waiting for a reply. I'm now working with Customer Care attempting to reset my account. Apparently there are two parts of the process first setting up and account second port the old phone number.

Right after I posted that I checked my email and got this message at 2:48:

We are currently processing your order. Your order number is ******
You will receive an additional e-mail when your order is complete that will provide further instructions to activate your iPhone.

Yes....I received that email myself....twice. Once at 330p local time...and then again at 1112p. Both quoted the same order number.

Now enjoying hour 26 of the activation queue.

Still hoping at least one person (and preferrably several more) at AT&T loses their job over this. Being caught a little off guard is one thing. However, there is little to no excuse for being caught with your pants down and your head up your ass....especially when your first response is to shove it further up.

Negligence does not begin to describe this fiasco.

the morning of the 3rd day dawns, now 33 hours and counting since original and 12 hrs since I replaced SIM and started a second round of wait email

I unlike many of ya'll have received no furthter emails since the original one. Makes me wonder if I'm toally lost in the system and how bad I scrwed up trying the SIM card change. Not that i don't appreciate the tip and glad it worked for so many of you but now have I confused the system and they think I've got two going. I'm so confused and bummed.

I'm very serioiusly contemplating just returning the damn thing when the store opens -- am that bummed , and just waiting till down the road. And trust me as a 22 year Macaholic who has 6 macs running in the office now and who was so so excited about this phone, it would be a major decision to give up on it for now. But its cost me 2 whole days of work lost at a critical time and i'm as mad at self as i am them. just so bummed and why can't they tell us anything...........

Wow... over 37 hours now and though there may have been a glimmer of hope early this AM (1:15 AM) when an AT&T rep stated that she and her supervisor were working on it and I should see something in 1 to 2 hours... well that light of hope went out this morning when not much to my surprise... NOTHING!

This morning's AT&T rep says... nothing they can do... "you just have to wait". My patience finally ran out and I went off on her (of course qualifying that it was not her fault) but I am sick of the waiting and the "no one can do anything, you just have to wait" party line.

I am the biggest Apple fan (for all of my life) and supporter of all things APPLE but this has been the most frustrating debacle I have ever been involved in... :frown: and it has really left a very bad sour APPLE taste...

You could try going to the AT&T store and having them look into their system about it. I talked to numerous CSR's this morning and all of them were pretty clueless, one was a bit knowledable... but at the store they were really helpful. Are you an existing customer? You could always try another new sim, right now it seems everything is up and running fine.

They did it in store here Day 1 which added to wait time, BUT BUT they gave us no credit code and when I went back the next day they had no clue what a credit code was, so I was approved in store and had to just leave the credit code thing blank. Well I accually got halfway through my check the first day (I'm 20 and have no credit) but once they found that out, they couldnt get my code to register and print properly, so they told me to leave it blank and when i registered it would send me a code to bring back to them, pay the deposit, then go back home and finish activation......none of that has happened yet..... so hopefully my rep will be able to get it for me this time.

I'm currently on hour 38 with this whole ordeal and I've managed to stay relatively calm throughout.

I'm a current Verizon Customer. I finally spoke with a very helpful rep located in Canada.

-Make sure you entered your name exactly how it appears on your verizon bill. My bill says Christopher, but I entered Chris.

-In porting the number, make sure you keep your verizon billing address and the primary place you'll use the phone the same. DON'T ENTER "OTHER"!!!

-You only need to enter your account number up to the hyphen. Anything after that will only bring up an error and delay you more!

-This rep canceled my activation. I went through the process again of activation and made sure all of the info is exactly correct.

-She's calling me back in 2 hours to manually activate the phone for me.

Hope this helps. This phone better be worth it!!!!

I just spoke to someone who said the delay was with my port. I had her connect me with the porting department. They put a recording on the phone that I had to agree to to finalize the porting of the number. I then was told that I now have to wait on the activations department to activate my account.

If you are trying to port. Call the 3701 number and try to have them connect you with somone in porting so they can work it out. I was told that the direct number to porting is 888-898-7685. I didn't try it myself as the lady I was on the phone with conferenced me in for that.

There is just so much contradictory info going around and so many ATT people saying different things. Clearly they were not ready for this. Its awful.

When you say his phone was activated, did he leave it plugged in and it just started working? Or did he receive the email confirmation 3 hours later?
