View Full Version : How to recognize iPhone instability requiring restore

A strange thing happened today. I've had no issues with connectivity since I jailbroke and unlocked via Pwnage. This morning, around 10am, while playing Travian , my iPhone lost all connectivity (no EDGE icon, but bars still showed; couldn't make or receive calls). Resetting didn't help. I removed the SIM card (AT&T SIM) and put it back in. Connectivity would be restored for a little while, but the same problem would recur.

I decided a complete restore would be in order.

I'll report back whether the restore worked or not. But, I am curious. Do jailbroken/unlocked iPhones require periodic restores?

I've never had a loss of connectivity since breaking.

It was really odd. I could neither call or use data. I called AT&T CS on the landline and they tried to convince me that my cell phone specific software used to communicate with the EDGE network had not been updated since I never turn off (power down) my iPhone. Despite supposedly updating to the current cellular software (analogous to updating PRL on the VZW network), the problem continued.

I restored to stock condition, and re-Pwnaged. I dropped re-installation of several apps such as Boss Prefs. We'll see if one of those apps was responsible.

Again, what makes this odd is that my iPhone had functioned fine for weeks.

I've had it happen once or twice. Turning the phone off and on again restored service in my case.

If it happens again, I'd love a listing of your apps folder just for shiggles.

I jailbroke and unlocked my iPhone almost 3 months ago using Ziphone.
I also use T-mobile as my carrier.

I never had a problem until 2 days ago when I got "No Service" at my house when I always get a good signal. My WiFi connection was fine though.

I tried turning it on and off, turning on Airplane mode on and off, resetting the iPhone, and then taking the SIM card out and back in. Nothing.

I put my SIM card in my old T-mobile phone and it worked fine.

I then put it back into my iPhone and was going to restore when I got my signal back. Well, this problem happened 3 more times that day and I just keep popping my SIM card in and out until it works.

Then today I noticed that my iPhone started cycling between full bars to no bars to no service then back to full bars, over and over, taking about 3-5 minutes per cycle. This is happening all over the place. Not just at my house.

It would cycle like that maybe a half dozen times then it will be fine for hours. Then start again. What the ....?

Anyone with any ideas? I've been told to not use Ziphone and use iLiberty or Pwnage instead.

Sounds similar to my problem - just happened out of the blue with no changes made to any system configuration. I restored (completely, re-Pwnaged) and did not re-install most of the apps I wasn't using anyway. So far, so good.

I think the jailbreaking gods were just looking out for you. Ya gotta clean house every now and then... it's good for the soul.

At least, that's my reasoning for why my vibrate died on me without any provocation.

I went through a bunch of iterations trying to fix this problem and I finally got it working.

Tried WinPwn but what really seem to do the trick was to use iLiberty+ 1.3 for windows. Although Cydia wouldn't work for me, I just put Installer on instead.

I'm just glad I got my signal back and it's been going steady for 2 days now.
