View Full Version : Now that you've gone iPhone, could you go back???

State what you had before the iPhone and whether you could go back...
I had my KRZR. Its the only motorola I've ever given the time of day to. As far as just looks go, I could deal with it again. It was small, slim, and sleek. I cannot however deal with such a small screen and actual buttons anymore. Nope, alas, I'm stuck with the iPhones from now on. You?

I had a Cingular 2125, and to be honest, I could go back for a day or two if I had to. It wasn't a bad phone. I had Google Maps, Opera Mini, NES emulator, 4 gigs of media, voice command. Not too shabby really. Plus my BT GPS actually worked with that version of Maps, so I still keep them in my glove box in times of emergency.
But no, I could not go back to that screen/web experience permanently.

Cingular 8525 (HTC TyTN) - and no way could I go back - more because of how lame Windows Mobile is ...
Motorola Razr V3m from Verizon
supposedly the "m" stood for Music, but it was nowhere near a decent music device... the music was all far too expensive, it didn't have a quality method of listening to it, the V-cast network was too expensive for not enough entertainment, and the web access was just laughable. The phone would run out of memory before finishing loading any page worth looking at.
The original revision I had could RECORD something and then I could play or use that as an alarm/ringtone/whatever I wanted... but when I had to have the phone replaced due to the charger socket no longer working, the updated revision I had no longer allowed me to do either of those things. CDMA = bad battery life. There was absolutely no value in the phone for me with all those things considered. I would not go back to it for any reason.

Only for about a month if I sell my V1 iPhone.
I could see myself going back to an HTC Tilt, if I had had one before I had the iPhone...only long enough for them to introduce tethering to the iPhone
(while I was in an AT&T store getting my iPhone's SIM card swapped, I had to activate it on the internet, and so to do that, the customer service tech had to tether my computer to his HTC Tilt so that I could connect to the internet and get iTunes to turn on my iPhone...so ironic...)
I could NEVER go back to my RAZR....or Verizon for that matter!

I turned off my Blackberry and went "cold turkey" with the iPhone for about 3 months. Then last month, I re-instated my Blackberry service and got a new Pearl just for the size.
For corporate email, the iPhone is still worst-in-class IMHO. I'd rank it far below Blackberry and even most Windows Mobile devices. For non-corporate email, it's OK but still pretty sub-par considering it won't let you respond to emails offline.
And for the record...I think even the basic phone features of the iPhone are still quite inferior to what I get out of my Blackberry or most other phones. Slick interface, but utterly useless if it lacks key functionality.
So for now...I'm back to carrying two phones.

The last phone I used was a 6700 PDA phone with Sprint. I do not miss it locking up all the time. Missing calls because the phone froze but you didn't know until the following day when you went to check your mail and nothing responded. Reboot again. I love the iPhone but when it comes to corporate (exchange) email, it is seriously lacking in any kind of business level functionality.

the last phone that i had was my bb it was ok .. email was super fast and cool... oh and i had a treo 650 with some program that let me watch movies... but once i got the iphone.... it is the BEST phone for me... even the email... the only thing that i miss is editing MS WORD docs and emailing them back..

Well, hopefully the new software will include that plus the opening of attatchments too. Ive had almost every Nextel sold except for the bricks and I do miss the Direct Connect but I think that is startin to die out now since Sprint took over, they promised better service by combining towers but I think it had gotten worse. As for the iPhone? Unless something like it comes out that is better, its stuck with me. I am very happy

I had the Cingular 8525. In terms of functionality, it kills the iPhone with its' eyes closed. But the Windoze GUI is terrible compared to the iPhone.
I still have the AT&T Tilt (for work). It's years ahead of the iPhone, but once again, the Windoze GUI lets it down.

I tried to go back to my Treo and couldn't handle it.. the clarity of the graphics on the screen has sold me for the Iphone.. the only thing that really gripes my butt is the fact that you can get a FREE phone from AT&T that is pretty cheap and you can take lowsy pictures with it and send it... but you can take AWESOME pics with the IPhone and CAN'T... WTF? I don't and probably will NEVER understand that! LOL

I had a moto Q and a Treo 755p before the iPhone. I could never go back to those 2. Of course I've sold my iPhone and moved on to the Nokia N95-4. I could never move back to the 1st gen iPhone from the N95. The upcoming 3g iPhone might be a different story though. If it just adds 3g and GPS and there are no camera improvements, MMS, and more useful email and browers (mainly saving attachments or adding attachments), then I will have to make a decision at that point. If it adds all those things, I'm sold and the N95 will become my backup that I carry when I need a 5.0mp camera.

I go back and forth all the time. That's just a nature of having multiple phone sites. I do like the tweaking aspect associated with the other phones. I'm anxious to get the whole third party software party underway. I've got Sirius working on my Q 9h and in the past I've used Slingbox software on my phones. Those will be welcome additions to the iPhone.
The iPhone just kills the other touch screen devices. When I've jumped to a touchscreen device, I got annoyed real quick with the so called "touch" capabilities. I recently test drove the Tilt and wanted to pull my hair out trying to do something as simple as dialing. I did enjoy geeking out the software on it. Lots of fun tweaks, hacks, etc.
I recently went on vacation and the iPhone still remains at the top of the heap. Safari just rocks and web browsing is big for me. Absolutely nothing compares to it.

chris
05-30-2008, 03:12 PM
I think the Q gets a bad rap, because of Windows Mobile. Motorola needs to do a better job of "masking" the OS. For first time users, it's completely intimidating. I know Microsoft is trying to make improvements in 6.1. That being said, the iPhone is ridiculously easy to use. Powerful. Easy. They changed the game. Palm *was* the only manufacturer who really seemed to understand that UI was important.

Like that saying from Meet the Robinsons, you have to keep moving forward. :tounge: WM has not kept up with the wants and needs of users, creating a huge void which Apple has filled. For me to go back to my XV6700 would certainly qualify as moving 10 steps back.

Interesting question, and one I have considered.
I look at some of the other phones out there like the one that is coming from Garmin and also the potential for the Android OS from Google.
But in the end, I love Apple products. I own an Intel iMac, an Intel MacBook, two iPods and the iPhone. I don't much like how Apple does business, but I love their products and because I am a Mac owner, I particularly love how all of their products interface and work so flawlessly together. That will keep me coming back to the iPhone.
Also, I just don't believe that any manufacturer will ever be able to beat Apple in the iPhone's fit and finish and its overall look. It is a piece of art, quite literally. None of the other so-called "iPhone killers" even come close.

The WM interface never bothered me. It certainly needs customization and shortcuts set up and such, but once you do that it's pretty fast. When it doesn't crash.
That said, the iPhone really needs no such tweaks and delivers a much better experience right out of the box. But, I guess only if you're geeky like me, WM isn't that bad.

My previous phone was a basic $19.95 device from Verizon.
It had no camera. It couldn't play mp3s. It had no ability to read emails. For contacts, calendar, and notes functionality I carried a separate Palm device.
So, "NO!" I couldn't go back!! I'm too hooked! The iPhone is not only my portable office but also my personal entertainment center. I get a real kick out of reviewing PDF's attached to emails one minute, and then viewing a rented copy of "The Simpsons Movie" the next! I also have thousands of my favorite songs on the thing which I play when I'm in my car. (Did I mention that the iPhone is also my first and only iPod??)
I've owned it since September, and I still find new uses for it daily. With the imminent emergence of the 2.0 software and the app store, it's pretty evident that this trend will continue unabated for the foreseeable future.
I loved my SE T610 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Ericsson_T610) especially because I could do so much with the BlueTooth including tethering without ever taking it out of my pocket. But there's no way I would go back to anything else. Just waiting for tethering at the App Store. :laugh2:

-It went from knowing one guy with a razr, to every other person I met having one:angry::tounge: I knew only one person even now who had a Krzr, and it was surprisingly on sprint- cause back then sprint had NO cool phones lol- and it did pretty well:smile:
I Enjoyed the Razr it was actually the first cool phone i had (Moved from Nextel) But leaving my iPhone is blasphemy
- I guess you "also" become tired and annoyed of that "Chirp" feature lol!

I had just started using the Motorolla Z800 Rizr (I think it was called), but don't think that I could go back to my beloved Sony Ericsson K800i now that I have had a taste of the iPhone. :D

I just got my iPhone back, as I had said at some point in this thread, and I have to say that I don't ever want to go back to a dumb windows mobile device again. It just doesn't stack up with how much of a pleasure it is to use the iPhone.

When I got rid of my iPhone for that brief and painful time I used a 750 and a Tilt. I had a Curve for a day so I didn't really mention that device. I enjoyed everything the tilt did, but when it came to ease of use, having to pull the stylus out all the time, and the slow response time when I would open the thing up, drove me crazy. Its such a pleasure to turn on the iPhone send a fast text and close it down, easy and convenient. I will say this to anyone that thinks of going to another device after the iPhone. Think twice, no three times, maybe four times! I can understand going cause you need Blackberry email for work, but the iPhone is an excellent device and its going to keep getting better.

If I had to go back, I would probably use the new LG with the touch panel.

-I know totally know what you were going through with the tilt, cause the on-screen options were to small to use you finger with, coupled with slow response time... but thats window for ya:tounge:

after a year and a half with the extremley buggy HP Ipaq, I could never go back to that POS.
Constantly flashing firmware. A thousand reboots a day... Very high maintenence ...It just was a little before its time, I guess. I really don't consider myself an iPhone "fanboy" but spend a little time with the Ipaq and the iPhone is a Godsend in comparison.
I don't think I've rebooted this week yet!

I could never go back to any other phone ever again. I've had razr's, i series moto phones, blackjacks and others I can't even think of now and none of them even come close to this phone. To be honest, I HATED apple until a friend of mine convinced me to look into the iPhone. I had no reason not to like apple other than being a windows fan bouy, but within 5 minutes of playing with the iphone for the first time, I was hooked. Now I'm saving my $$$$ for a MacBook and getting the iphone 3G when it comes out. Its like a freaking drug.... As sad as that sounds.

We were discussing this late night in chat last night. I say, the next time you're really pissed off about no MMS, no cut-and-paste, or whatever, just go fire up safari and do some surfing and know that you're getting the best mobile browsing experience available, period. Then fire up your iPod and know that you're listening to the coolest MP3 player ever. Then go play a jailbreak game that uses the accelerometer and dream about where this is going with the AppStore.
Every device must be taken as a whole. While other devices may seem tempting on paper due to their specs, they often fail as a "whole experience" sort of thing. This is where the iPhone accels...
All just my opinion here.

I've had my iPhone since last August, and I thought I was getting bored with it..similar to Coinstar99. I convinced my wife I wanted a different phone with a physical keyboard, and better voice quality. So I gave her my iPhone and bought a Moto Q 9h. I told all my friends that the Q rocked and how it did so many things the iPhone couldn't. Secretely, after about 3 days with the Q, I was missing my iPhone.
a
The internet on the Q was pathetic compared to what Safari could do. Everytime I used the net to do anything, a little voice in the back of my head would be saying, "This would be SO much easier and SO much prettier on your iPhone." I had also forgotten what non-threaded texting was like. It's horrible. I missed my threaded texting. Bad.
Finally, after about 3 weeks with the Q, I told my wife I wanted my iPhone back & gave her the Q. She didnt really care either way. She mostly uses her phone just as a phone & texting device, so the Q suits her needs.
I will never again take my iPhone for granted, nor switch to another device without a great amount of thought, research and knowledge. I will in all likelyhood be buying a iPhone 3g in August & putting back my v1 as a backup. I'm a bit dissappointed that we're still missing Flash, MMS and better Bluetooth support, but it's like a previous poster in this threat said, you have to take the iPhone as a whole. There are some things it should do, that it doesn't do at all.... then there are some things it does better than anything else on the market. All comes down to which features are important to you.

I have had it all ! I have worked for wireless companies since 1998 so if its out I have used it . Almost always had high end stuff and it all boiled down to recently, I got my iPhone got rid of it cause I wanted a physical keyboard and there is not a phone out there that does what the iPhone does . The Tilt and the Curve and even the Treo 750 are great devices and for text and email they do their job and they do it well. I even used the Q9c for Sprint for a while and there just isn't anything that does what the iPhone does or does it as well . I think anyone that had a serious chance to use the iPhone would agree. Its just a pleasure to use . I am always happy to help anyone that asks, and offer unbiased advice. Look at my sig, its my job .
