View Full Version : Airline check-in for i-Phone

We're taking our first flight with i-Phones (or any cell phone for that matter).
I've browsed the TSA site and the web in general and haven't found an answer to my question:

How should I handle going through the check-in process with my i-Phone.
Is it safe for it to go through the scanning equipment? There's no chance of it getting damaged? You know I'm protective of my little friend!

I have read (on this site) that we should just plan on having our phones turned off during the flight. Airplane mode probably isn't acceptable.

Thanks!

Not sure I understand your question, completely. I travel all the time with my iPhone. When going through the security checkpoint, I put my iPhone in one of the plastic containers along with my jacket/shoes, or keys, etc. I leave it on. The X-ray machine does not affect the iPhone. On the air plane, put your iPhone into airplane mode before the flight takes off. Leave your phone off (really, sleep mode) until the flight attendants say it's OK to turn electronic equipment on. You can use your iPhone as an iPod. When you land, turn off airplane mode when the attendants say it's OK.

Well, for not understanding my question, you did a nice job of answering it!
I was just asking if the scanning equipment (which I guess is just X-ray) could damage the i-Phone. I assume I don't have anything to be concerned about with my digital camera, either.

Thanks, Eragon.

No problems with digital photography. Take your time going through the check point, regardless if there is an angry mob behind you. If, like me, you have a backpack full of electronic peripherals there is the possibility that the TSA agent may ask to open and inspect if the images can't be resolved in the X-ray machine monitor.

Lastly, be mindful of bringing extra lithium-ion batteries. TSA is very sensitive to the potential for fire due to defective laptop batteries.

Man that's a great find! I have actually searched the forums in the past for that same idea. I was curious several months back if bar codes could be read from the iphone screen. My idea was to know if the e-ticket that is emailed to you if you're going to a sporting event could be read from a handheld scanner instead of carrying around that paper copy.

Glad to know it will work.
Thanks

btw, using airplane mode in-flight is perfectly fine.

that's what they made it for!

Great info, thanks all. I'm hoping that the iPhone will replace the Treo, iPod, and laptop that I lug around whenever I travel and I had the same questions/fears as Mike12000. Now I'm fully committed and can't wait for June 9th. That ticketless system is pretty cool too.

Don't count on that ticketless scan at the airport working as your boarding pass. I tried the same thing at a store to pic up some clothes I had ordered online to be delivered via their local retail outlet. We tried the scan, because the clerk and I both wanted to see whether it would work. But several attempts produced no luck. It would be great. But I suspect it might have to do with the particular scanning device being used, thus making each attempt its own unique situation.
