I wish this was do-able, however this is my own photoshop and the lack of clarity and detail is deliberate!
what changed?
1. useless area above status bar and space between speaker hole and top of iphone reduced
2. qwerty kybd added
3. home button moved/rescaled
4. useless area at the bottom reduced

Nice effort. LIke the thoughts on reducing unused space top and bottom, but think maybe a touch less would be nicer aesthetically.

I think that keyboard size would end up in the Palm Centro sort of size bracket, which to me seems downright unusable for most folks. I know I'm *very* much in the minority on this, but for faster input on things like note-taking, I'd much rather have some handwriting recognition and a stylus than a physical keyboard.

For IM, texting, short email replies etc., I'm happy enough with the on-screen keyboard - I don't like the idea of a physical keyboard much ...

That's a good idea, I could see RIM doing something like that. For the iPhone though, that would kill the Landscape Mode if a physical keyboard was actually ever instituted.

I must agree with Patrick - I like the touch keyboard. A physical one wouldn't do it for me.

My own thow-together:

great points all. thanks. the only thing i miss about using a blackberry is the rare occassion that you need to crank out a long email that the finger board comes in handy to finish the job..but again great points all.

btw thanks for the touch up John!

I too have grown quite fond of the virtual keyboard. But I wouldn't mind it with less of a bezel around the screen. Imagine a 4" diagonal widescreen that literally went edge to edge. Maybe a 1/4" space around. That would be hot.
