View Full Version : 188 Containers Ship to North America for Apple
Interesting read here: http://www.tuaw.com/2008/05/23/could-electric-computers-be-the-new-iphone/
An unusually-large shipment of 188 mysterious containers has arrived in North America from Apple's manufacturing partners in China. The contents? "Electric computers," a term that Apple has never before used on its customs declarations. Additionally, 67 of the containers were destined for Canada, landing in Vancouver, BC.
These containers are not to be confused with Apple's regular flotilla of shipping destined for the west coast. Typically, those containers are labeled as having "desktop computers" inside on their customs forms.
ImportGenius.com (http://www.importgenius.com/blog/iphone) speculates that each container could contain up to 40,000 units of new iPhones.
---
That means potentially there's 7.25M phones in the 188 containers.
Yes...I can't wait.

I wish I was better at math. I think a 40' container has about 65 cubic meters of usable space (it may be 67-I forget). And then I could figure out how big an iphone box will likely be based on current iphone box size. Then a bunch of those small iPhone boxes will be in some larger boxes, and all those large boxes piled into the container.
188 containers is a lot of stuff!
Anyone else like math more than I do?

iPhone packaging:14.5x9x8cm
~ 1000 iPhones m3 w/ current packaging
188 containers
20ft container: 33m3
40ft container: 67m3
so... 6.2 - 12.6 million iPhones, depending on shipping container size if they pack each container full.

Yes, those containers. I just got a 40' container of parts to make more things to sell this past Friday. Well, not me personally. No iPhones, though. Just parts of parts.
I am sure that Apple is using 40' containers, or 40' HC (high cubes). It costs almost as much to transport a 20' container as a 40'.

Probably closer to $4,000 with import duties that are usually paid with the shipping charges. But I do not know the rate of tax on electronic items.
