The end size to the files created is fantastic. I have 4-5 second videos from Showtime on my phone and they are in the 11-13MB range. Same length video, with sound, from this new program is around 256KB. Very impressive, relatively fast compiling. The overall quality of the video is sufficient for most "on the fly" videos that you may need to create. Good job on the software. I might just have to buy this one. Full version is under $20. Not too bad for an unlimited length video recorder that includes sound.

I've been testing that app. I like the evaluation model. I hate to pay 19.99 for it. But it's well thought out and works great!!!

I wouldn't pay the $20 until it offers upload to youtube or other sites, as this is what uShow is touting it will do.
Don't get me wrong, that's not out yet and I'm really happy to see others working on this and releasing now, but if all these folks are going to be charging, it will be a battle of features.

Pretty cool!
I like the ability to pause encoding for later.
The lag for playback is a little cumbersome, and I'm not getting sound (it sounds like it's trying to record something as I get clicks at the top and tail of the video, but no audio).

Also, the orientation and framing is all wrong. Portrait videos playback in landscape with the top and bottom chopped off, and Landscape... well, it doesn't appear to support landscape yet.
Right now, for me, it's better than Showtime only because it will cut longer than 5 seconds. But that's about the only reason. Not quite ready for the pricetag yet.

Sound is supported, yes. Also, if you film in landscape, then the video is crooked, even when you email the file. If you film in portrait, it shows up in landscape on the iPhone, but it's normal when you email the file.

The Audio worked for me. I do agree with you on the lag. I've got a few more things to test on it. But I like it so far.
psylichon
04-24-2008, 03:18 PM
Ok, well the lag thing is simple... you have to tap the screen to start. Once you do that, the video starts pretty quickly.
I still can't get any sound. I get a clunky, shifty sound at the beginning of the video (sounds like the start of most home movies shot with built-in mic) but then nothing. I've tried with and without the earbud mic. Nothing.
Also, why do videos playback with the wrong orientation?

Installing this now. However I'm a bit curious as to why this would be developed and released, when uShow - which is supposedly around the corner - has all of this and more, with unlimited recording, for free.
Still, this is much better than ShowTime and will hold me off until uShow.

In addition to that, I'm not using. I downloaded it, and I couldn't understand anything I had said in the video and it was rather dark - I recorded it outside.
I actually prefer ShowTime. Oh well.

Quality is not great, but tolerable for on the fly capturing moments I think. One big edge it has over ShowTime is its compression ratio - *very* small file sizes - and the easy email to yourself button and fast encoding don't hurt either ...

It's great for emailing! My problems:
1. I'm not getting sound. Apparently I'm the only one, but I'd love to know why.
2. It records in portrait orientation, but not full screen. That is, you have a portrait orientation to your "viewfinder" but it's actually recording a landscape-style orientation cropped out of the middle. You'll see this on playback... it's not what you saw when recording.
I think the thing should record in absolute orientation, so landscape appears landscape... when's the last time you saw a video oriented for portrait proportions?

I agree on the orientation stuff. I've found that quite odd so far to get used to - it even shows the encoding %age done in oddball orientation for me.
No sound = strange - have not heard anybody else mention that here or on Twitter etc. ...

the sound works - just go to settings and put the amplifier to 10 instead of 2
the only problem is it takes so long to encode!
how can other phones instantly play back the video when this takes like 5 minutes for a 30 second video
im guessing the larger file type

Thank you all for your interest in our app, and your advices are inspiring.
Yes, we (a developer team of three) are doing our best to improve the app, we will bring out a better video recorder for iPhone soon.
Some new features in a near version:
Send to Youtube and so on
Brighter color
Known bugs are being fixed, a newer version is to be released today.
Keep an eye.

Great work so far and congrats on getting it out ahead of uShow. This is no easy feat!
I know my sound issues are isolated to me. I'd still love to figure out why so hopefully it doesn't happen to someone else, though. I've tried cranking the record volume to 10, it makes no difference. It makes the same clunky sound then nothing each time consistently.
Not the end of the world, just putting it out there. My phone is fully functional in every other way.

Straight up, this currently is the best video recording solution for the iPhone. To compare this to uShow is premature at best since uShow only exists as mockup screenshots presently.
19 is on the high side, 10 is the sweet spot.
Once the viewfinder gets worked out so I know what exactly the "Live" area is, and the other bits mentioned previously, I'm going to buy this. The record button also needs to be at the bottom of the screen, near my thumb for a much more intuitive layout.
I've been messing with this all day, and I'm pretty impressed for a first release (and subsequent update thereafter launch).

I registered again for uShow on Wednesday morning. The confirmation message said that we'd learn more / hear something via email within 24-48 hours.
OK, so it's not by much - but once again that time frame has passed and I've seen nothing further.
uShow does *look* like it may be very impressive, but at some point it would be good to see them delivering on-time ...

Yeah man it's hard to get excited over vaporware when we have tools in our hands right now. Sure, free is nice, but this one does a lot with the demo.
And the file size is something pretty remarkable. I wonder if uShow will make such emailable files. Short clips are almost smaller than pictures, even on the Best setting!

I am the author of this app.
I hope you're checking in here every now and then. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you think of any reasons why I can't get sound in my videos? I've tried every update up to the latest 1.1.8... and I love the new features. But everyone else has sound except me and I can't figure it out. I've3 completely uninstalled several times, but to no avail.
With every version, I've gotten a clunky sound at the start of the video, then a faint high-pitch whine over otherwise silence. This is with and without the headset/mic and at every audio bitrate setting.
Please.... any ideas? I'd love to use this app. It works fine with my wife's iPhone and we have basically the same software plus or minus a couple games. Any permissions things I may need to do?
psylichon
04-26-2008, 06:43 PM
Ok, here's a bug report:
When you switch audio sampling rates, it apparently doesn't go back to system default when you close the program, because text tones will playback at an obviously lower sample rate than normal. The "glass" sounds more like a low gong .... kinda like 32 kbps sounds.
I was hoping this was an indicator of my audio problems, but it's the same on wifey's phone too.
Restarting the phone fixes it, by the way, until you run video recorder again with the low res settings...
psylichon
04-26-2008, 06:56 PM
Aaaaand another update:
On a whim I reset my settings and reinstalled and voila... I have sound! I knew it wasn't your program, but I'm glad to have solved it. If anyone else runs across this problem, pass it along...

How do you know it's stolen? Has the developer admitted this? Maybe a link to what you're basing that on would be helpful. There seems to always be so much drama, and so many accusations, in this particular category of app ...

Yup. And again, uShow does look very promising - but when even the self-imposed deadlines like 'you'll get more info in 48 hours' can't be met, that does not bode well for future promises about what versions of an app will contain, or how the app and updates may be supported etc.
Hope they send out their promised info soon, and hope the app is as good as promised ...

Well, based on my own troubleshooting, I could only offer that as advice... reset your settings (not wipe everything, just the basic reset). It got me sound and made everything work right. I would uninstall Iphone Recorder first... reset settings... reinstall I.R. and make sure it works. Then redo all your settings.
That last part only takes about 5 minutes max if you know your phone. It's nice to review settings every now and then anyway :)

8.28 volumn(? :) )amp
best performance landscape
best image quality
64k bps audio bitrate (read my post above about using lower bitrate)
auto-start encoding on
100% brightness
It's working great for me at these settings. Just leave yourself a pad at the end of your video because a lot of audio and some video will get cut off of the end.

just read this whole discussion after installing iPhoneVideoRecorder yesterday and purchasing it today.
i think this app is great! the 30 sec limitation is like a gift, given that it's so much longer than the 5 sec limitation i'm used to with ShowTime -- I decided to buy it just to show my appreciation to the developers.
i've had no problems to far. none of the problems others are experiencing. the color is a little dark or off -- but i have the brightness setting at 75% which helps a little.
btw, my settings are max pic size, best image quality, 128kbps audio, auto-encoding on, brightness 75.
regarding the registration comment: the only thing i can think of is make sure your iphone isn't automatically capitalizing the first character -- mine was all lowercase.

We have just released iPhone Video Recorder V1.1.8, with improved brightness function. A newer version V1.2.0 is on the go which offers by a stronger encoder, some new features, and less bugs.
Thank you very much for your support, we are so glad that you are interested in our product. We love your emails, advice, and support. Meantime, nothing can stop us working on with more functional and legibel product.I've had 1.1.8 for about a week now, what's up with that?

This app works great for me. I have no complaints except maybe that at first I couldn't see how to playback the captured video - just got a black screen until I realised that you have to touch the screen to get the controls up and play the thing. I think it's OK to charge good money for a good app. Someone had to make it happen and I value their investment of their ability and willingness.

hey i just updated this app now it records video all wacked, its like its zoomed in too much, any one have the old version ? DON'T UPDATE TOO 1.1.8
I just tried out 1.1.8 and I noticed the same thing but to me it doesn't look like it is zoomed in, it is warped. If you are filming something close like your desktop and you move the camera left and right it will make the desktop look like it is fluid. It will wobble around like you are looking through a fisheye lens. A bit too much for optimum everyday filming. You have to hold the camera very still to get a stable recording.

So, I noticed something today. I opened the app and the window that pops up upon launch that displays three options is missing the 'Continue Evaluation' button. My only options are to Purchase a license or Enter registration code. All the videos are still present, and are playable with AVPlayer.

Ok I LOVED this app but I did a dumb thing with the demo. I accidentally hit the the buy now or register button and now I cant launch the program cause it keeps asking me to put in a code :( Yes I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it and it was as though i never uninstalled, all my videos were there and I could still not launch the prog without it asking to enter a reg code :(.
Yea I know I should just buy the shareware but I dont need the full features and 30 sec vids are perfect to email, any longer and it takes forever.
So anyone have a solution aside from buying the app ?

So anyone have a solution aside from buying the app ?Maybe go into your iPhone directory and find and delete all references to this app (after you uninstall), then reinstall it. Also, go into your settings and 'reset all settings'.

I clicked both the "Purchase a license" and "Enter registration code" buttons. The Purchase a license just opens a browser and the Enter registration code has a cancel option that allows you to back up and "continue evaluation". I cannot reproduce the problem your having with it. Sorry.

I hit the cancel option after Enter registration code and it goes BACK to "Purchase a license" and "Enter registration code" buttons. a constant loop of not working :(

Do you not have a third option below those two that says "Continue Evaluation"? Mine has 3 buttons, Purchase, Enter Code and Continue Eval. I wonder if there is a time limit on the program that I haven't reached yet but you have. How odd.

John was talking about having reached some sort of limit with his. His Eval button disappeared as well.
Unannounced disabling is NOT A COOL FEATURE. Backlash city, man. Ya gotta warn folks about that.

Especially since the only notice about limitation that I remember seeing was that unregistered was limited to 30 second recordings. Not good.

I just went to their site to see if there was any information concerning the time limitation and boy was I shocked, they have taken our postings from this forum and put them on their site as "favorable comments" without asking anyone if that was okay. My first post in this forum concerning the size of the video files compared to Showtime and my initial thoughts on the program after using it the first time has now become a comment on their site as if I wrote to them complimenting them on their product.
Unpublished expiration of the software and then posting comments without even asking? Not a good way to run a business. At least they gave me credit for my comment. :-)

OK, now it's my turn. I went to record my daughter running in a track event, when I get the screen that asks for purchase/enter registration. No other option, so I couldn't record her event. They never said this was a time-limited trial, just a 30-second limit. WTF.

I got mine working again... I uninstalled it, then SSH'd and deleted the folder /private/var/mobile/media/iPhoneVideoRecorder, then I cleared all my cache in the Settings/Safari section (just for ****s and giggles). I then rebooted the phone and reinstalled the app, and I now have the 'Continue Evaluation' back!!

Well, I forget who mentioned it, but apparently the harbinger of "shady business practices" has rung true once again.
Allegedly stolen code, unannounced disabling, and now uncredited "endorsement" without, um, endorsement. Sure sounds like three strikes to me.
Please don't pay for this, folks. uShow is apparently right around the corner.

Whats SSH? I'm on a Macintosh PowerBook

Whats SSH? I'm on a Macintosh PowerBook
It stands for secure shell and is a secure method for connecting to a remote system - in our case generally connecting from a computer to the iPhone. Here's a little guide I've chucked out here a few times for people wanting to use it for the first time:
Requirements:
A jailbroken iPhone. For this guide we will assume you are running the current latest iPhone firmware, Version 1.1.4.
An SSH program on your computer. A couple of good free options are WinSCP for a Windows PC, and Cyberduck for a Mac.
The BSD Subsystem installed on your iPhone. You’ll find this under the System category in Installer.
OpenSSH (or another SSH variant) installed on your iPhone. This is also found under the System Category in Installer.
iPhone and computer need to be on the same (usually wireless) network. For the sake of this guide, we’ll assume both are on a home wireless network.
An ability to turn SSH On and Off on the iPhone. SSH programs on the iPhone do not create an icon on the home screen, so one of the easiest ways to do this is to use the BossPrefs application on the iPhone (to install it you’ll need to add the BigBoss source to Installer - which is http://sleepers.net/iphonerepo). There are other iPhone applications that do this as well, but BossPrefs is currenty the best of these in my view.
Steps:
* Make a note of your iPhone’s IP address. To find this, on your iPhone go to Settings > WiFi and tap on the blue arrow to the right of the name of your home network. On the screen that comes up, note the set of numbers listed in the IP Address field.
* Turn SSH On, on the iPhone. With BossPrefs and other similar applications, this is just a matter of tapping on the SSH entry to toggle it on and off. Please Note: it is good idea to make sure you toggle SSH back off when you are through using it.
* Launch your SSH app on your computer. WinSCP will land you on a new ‘Session’ screen straight away. On Cyberduck, you’ll need to choose ‘Open New Connection’. See screencaps at the top of this post and below for a look at how these screens appear. Then you need to fill in a few fields to specify how you want to connect and what device you want to connect to. The fields are named slightly differently depending on which program you use, but they are similar enough that you should be able to fill them in as follows:
Hostname or Server = enter your iPhone’s IP address in this field
File Protocol = should be SCP on WinSCP and SFTP on Cyberduck
Username = enter ‘root’ (without the quotes) in this field
Password = enter ‘alpine’ in this field (without the quotes) or whatever you have changed root’s password to, if you have ever changed it.
* Once you have entered the information as above, hit ‘Login’ on WinSCP or ‘Connect’ on Cyberduck. It may take up to 30 seconds or so to connect.
* You will see a confirmation message asking if you will accept key exchange / connection with the device with the iPhone’s address. You’ll need to say Yes or Allow on these.
Once connected, you are presented with an Explorer-like view of the file system on the iPhone, or of the iPhone and your own computer. Once there, you can copy files and folders back and forth between the computer and iPhone.

Two of the same threads + both in the wrong category = bad news
Not to mention, it's a commercial app. If this were a DVD converter app, he'd be zapped. Maybe I'm getting more lenient in my old age.

I didn't realize there was any issue with discussing commercial apps. There have been several discussed in EIC - Labyrinth and Voice Dial etc.. And there will be plenty more once the App Store opens ...

There isn't an issue with discussion of commercial apps and announcements are acceptable. Offering support of commercial apps is actually encouraged. Multiple threads of the same topic (promoting a commercial app) is not accepted, as it borders on spam.
So, yes to announcements in the right category and a big yes to offering readers of EIC support for said commercial apps. Overall, if a post provides some useful benefit to members of this forum, then it passes. Take the DVD converter spam as a different example. There are a million of those apps and a million web sites that come here to simply post a link and leave. Back to the OP. This appears to be an exciting app and in some ways unique -- thus, offering interest to many readers here at EIC.
Kind of a gray area, but benefit to readers of EIC always trumps other factors when making that type of call.

patrickj thank you for your response, I'm sure it will help some. but Im just not geek enough to get it. It's just way too much mumbo jumbo for me to go through to get my video camera back, to be honest clicking the little pay now button and $24.95 credit card is a whole lot easier for me ;)
FWIW I tried to jailbreak my phone before Ziphone and it was a 4 day nightmare. I'm just not the hacker I used to be in my youth :(

LOL - fair enough. I can understand that, especially if you've had a previous bad experience with jailbreaking. And honestly, of all the apps that have wanted to be paid for so far, I think this one has a very strong case for justifying it ...

Despite their unethical "borrowing" of comments from forums and posting them on their site as favorable comments, the product is very well written and I have used it a lot. I went ahead and purchased it just to stop the pop up from happening over and over again. It is one of the few applications that works as advertised and the filesize compared to the other programs available makes it a front runner in my opinion. Of course that might change with the software coming out from the Developers Kit, but for now it is the best in its class.

I agree it is a frontrunner, and hopefully we'll see it continue to develop and show up in the App Store as well.
Agree with you that the 'borrowing' of comments is out of line. Hope that maybe if you point that out to them, they may correct that situation as well ...

Yeah, I get this with certain apps from time to time. Seems to happen with apps that have frequent updates. (Especially TimeCapsule...how many fffffffriggin' updates does that app need anyway???) Two versions appear and installer thinks both are the newest one, so you have a perpetual update cycle.
It's REALLY annoying. I wish you could tell installer to ignore updates. TimeCapsule is cool and all, but their release schedule is maddening, especially since I keep the icon in a categories folder... I gotta go redo that every time it updates!

I sent an email to Dream Catcher about that. They are providing 1.2.2 on their source (they are the author) and ModMyIphone has a newer version? I would think it would be the other way around with the authors site having the latest and best. I installed the one from DreamCatcher and will stick with that one until I hear back from them on why they dont have, what appears to be, the latest version of their own software.
