ok,must be some jailbroken feature I didnt know was comin!
To the left of my space bar, there is a circular figured icon, which when pushed brings up a page with lots of options:...4 squared partitions each dedication to numbers, letters, all symbols, and Chinese symbols...
not sure what the advantages are...haven't played with it enough.
What version of firmware are you on? I have version 1.1.4 and I don't have anything like that, and I am jailbroken as well.

I have 1.1.4....
the icon....looks like a planet of sorts with 2 or 3 circular orbits around it.
I figured it out!!!
I had downloaded the handwriting recognition program from installer and it must create that new icon and does toggle quite a few options...as well as the handwriting option...which does work fairly well.

Yes - that is created by the HWPen handwriting recognition app ...

This came with the january update.. in settings you can select multiple languages for the keyboard, and that little icon toggles between languages for the keyboard.

It's not the handwriting thing. I don't have that installed, but I do the have the button. I have US and English keyboards selected - that buttons switches between them.

Some of what he described is definitely the new app:

Why did it affect your typing ability?

because when you try to use a period or whatever, that button is in place, and when you press it, it takes you to the handwriting
which take an hour and a half to load.
then, and only then, must you click 123 to get to your icons.
Makes typing BB code or in parentheses a *****.

ywah, stuff like that..the extra options called for hittin' that button more than when uninstalled.
Typing, say you're email into a site was tough becausethere wasn't enough space for all the letters or numbers to show...
try it!

The handwriting app only affects the Notes app correct? You can't send an SMS via the handwriting feature right?

I am contemplating installing this app. But, if it gets in the way of using the characters under "123," then I don't want to bother if it doesn't have a disable feature. Is there a way to turn it off in its settings?
The app seems like a good idea, but like you said it sounds cumbersome to use.

all you have to do is press the icon twice fast and youll get to the "123" keyboard its like a splitt second deifference and doesnt taje any time to load up for me unlike the other guy mentioned. its kinda cool but isnt that great at recognizing yet. not practical a all just a coo little toy to mess with until in improves greatly i guess.

Could potentially be useful.. but load times suck. Lots of third party apps seem to have issues with that.

I had HWPen installed for a while. It was cool to show off to geeks who appreciate that sort of thing, but honestly the recognition was pretty poor. It wasn't even really show-off worthy. And certainly no where near as fast as using the keyboard. Some things are just best with a stylus I guess.
I could have lived with double-tapping to get to punctuation/numbers (although that is very annoying), but when I noticed that it messed up my normal landscape keyboard (compressed it to half the screen), that puppy had to go. Hopefully it will get better with more speed and options how it is implemented...
