Good luck making any sense of it, though. Proprietary naming, directories, the whole shebang.

Unlike wallpapers and the like, you can't just drop a song in there and play it. When synced, iTunes assigns the song (or other item to be place din the iPod) a long random name, and then places it in the folder above. There's something particular about those names that makes the iPod recognize it, and you can't do that by renaming and dropping it in there.

You can, however, play any kind of media files in AVPlayer, by simply choosing to open the said file with AVPlayer in MobileFinder.
