I came across a shocking video on strange foods on youtube, which led me to start watching all of Andrew Zimmern's bizarre food videos...it's amazing what people will ingest! What's the strangest food you've ever tried?

Here's the video I found appalling; don't watch it if you have a sensitive stomach:

Well, each of my daughters has snuck their way to our "cat's room" and snarfed down wet cat food. Come to think of it, so has Harry. :)

I did eat a Mopane worm once on a dare when I was visiting Africa. It was fried, kind of dry and crunchy with little flavor. I can't understand why it's considered a 'delicacy':

I really don't get out enough to contribute anything truly grotesque. I do love Andrew Zimmern though... don't you just wanna give him a big hug?

One thing I do really enjoy that gets raised eyebrows almost everytime is raw pancake batter...

He's GREAT! I watched him eat calf brains, cow tongue, scorpions, bull penis and testicles, a frog's (beating) heart, and several other crazy things before I could force myself to exit Youtube. The man is fearless!

Tripe.

Had I known I would have never eaten it, but now I don't mind it.

I'm in Texas--fried cow's balls are a delicacy here. especially when consumed with Lone Star Beer.

Isn't that what they call Rocky Mountain Oysters, or is that just a joke? Have you tried them - are they good?

I've eaten alligator... which literally tastes like chicken.

then there's all the weird Norwegian crap I've eaten due to customary obligations... ludefisk, whale, etc.

nothing as crazy as insects, bull testacles, or fish-heads, though.

I've eaten alligator, too, and you're right - it does actually taste like chicken.

What Norwegian customary obligations are you referring to? My adopted sis is Norwegian, so I'm curious.

Edit: Curious only because she hasn't been 'home' in a long time, and I'm interested in knowing what you've experienced, that's all. :)

oh nothing really... it wasn't forced on me. Whenever we visit, we always have a big family dinner at a traditional restaurant, so over the years i have tried to try (<-i don't know how that works...) all of the more unusual things... which aren't that unusual compared to other cultures.

except for ludefisk.

Now there's one I hadn't heard of - I had to google it! Ha, nothing to be ashamed of, there.

The only thing I find truly shameful is the practice of eating animals alive - more prevalent than I thought! I'm still not sure how I feel about Bulut...other than just being grossed out!!

Bulut is a very popular Philipino selection. I remember, dread with fear, the stories of having to make sailors eat Bulut as part of the crossing of the equator ceremonies. Especially, for sailors like me, assigned to the Pacific Fleet. Fortunately, the US pulled out of the Philipines well prior to my West Pacific deployment. The worst we had to eat was some kind of King Triton slop that tasted and looked as bad as it smelled.

Eww, I saw balut on Survivor once and that was pretty nasty.

I haven't really had super strange foods. Kangaroo, ostrich and koala are about as weird as they get because I'm a rather picky eater.

Why'd you have to go and bust out the bulut? I'm on my way out to dinner ya know!!!

Sorry.

I'm a nuclear safety inspector, not food. I once went to an Italian restaurant to pick up the food I called in (how's that for fast?). Besides being late (workers were a bunch of teenagers having fun pretending to work), one of the food preparers handled money (no gloves, no follow up handwashing), then proceded to prepare my food. Yuck. Don't mean to be so observant. But, do they have to make it that obvious?

I once was waiting for food at a chinese restaurant in Boston. I was sitting down at a table and I look back and see the guy drop a piece of chicken while tossing it in the frier. He picks it up and looks real close at it. He goes towards the frier... looks at it again... looks around... sees me, smiles REAL big "haha!"... and tosses it into the trash. I never went back to that place.

Both of those tales are absolutely disgusting. I get so grossed out when I go somewhere and I notice that the employees are not wearing gloves while preparing the food. I've been to Subway before and the employees there weren't wearing gloves. I was shocked. I asked them to put gloves on before making my food and they didn't seem too keen on the idea (as if I had made some radical request).

Next time you got to McD's, look under the French Fry work station. At the one near where I live, can't help but wonder the last time the staff cleaned the debris on the floor.

Oh I forgot about gator, it's pretty good too.

I've also had shark and it isn't bad but the taste isn't anything special.

I quite like Tamarind, an odd tree fruit of sorts. Rose petals are quite zesty as well, they really liven up a salad.

I LOVE rose petals! Rose petal jam is a staple around here for toast.
I love fruit of all kind...lychee and guava among my favorite. Very difficult to come across in the midwest. I found lychees at my local grocery store once, and they were charging $1.99 PER FRUIT (they're a little bigger than a quarter).

Coasts, I'm going to have to google Durian - I've never heard of it! I like the way you eat, though, so I take notes.
