View Full Version : Unbelievable frustrations with Mail

Hey all,
I've had problems with mail since the day I purchased my iPhone. I have four accounts, 2*Yahoo accounts, a work account, and a Fastmail account.
Usually after first turning on the phone, the mail works perfectly once or twice. Then when I come back later to check mail, I notice that the wheel to the right of the Edge sign or Wifi Network symbol on top isn't there spinning. If there's no spinning wheel, then I know I will not be able to receive any emails nor send them out. The only way to solve is to restart the phone.
I've tried deleting all of the accounts, restoring the iPhone, changing the receive email option to manual and the other auto settings, and nothing works. I'm sick of always having to restart the phone to get mail. I've tried this with the last three software versions and am now on the current 1.1.4. I have never jailbreaked or unlocked the phone.
Any ideas? My frustration level is very high with the phone only for this reason.
Thanks so much!
-Phil

Unfortunately, you don't have many options. The iPhone mail application is Spotty at best. I do what you've been doing. When the mail application doesn't show any messages, I'll hit the mail widget to force the iPhone to pull the mail. I have my iPhone set to manually check mail every 15 minutes.
Every once in awhile mail seems to be waiting for extra postage, and takes forever download. Or, mail appears to be invincible to deletion and prefers to hang around a little longer in my In box.
The bottom line: manually (yourself) check for new mail; reset the iPhone (home and sleep button); restore the iPhone; or pay the mail man extra postage.

I blame Yahoo. They've been historically flaky with their iPhone support. And their servers seem to go down more often than Jenna Jameson.
I've never had a problem with my gmail account... flawless operation for the most part.

Wow you described your current avatar to the tee.
S***, that's like 10 posts back and forth. We need some policing here! Or an IRC channel...

So if I may hijack my thread back to its original topic ...you are all suggesting that the issue may be with the Yahoo accounts?
Thanks!

I think Yahoo bears a lot of responsibility for the problem. But, it is Apple's own lackluster support of the Mail application which should draw our ire. Not much we can do to get Apple to fix the problems.
Bottom line: some mail programs may work better than others, but Apple needs to step up to the plate to make the iPhone live up to its reputation as a revolutionary communication device.

It isn't restricted to Yahoo. I have 3 accounts on my cable provider and I will check my email on my phone and it will show 2 or 3 then later when I am on a desktop computer I check the email and I have 43 unread from days ago that the phone didn't even think to show me. It just picks a few and downloads them. Same happens with Yahoo. These aren't emails with large attachments or embedded images or video that the phone can't display, even normal text only emails are skipped by the phone.
