About buyin iphone directly from apple

If i was to buy an iphone directly from apple do i have to get a contract with at&t as soon as i buy it or can i take it home after i buy it so i can unlock to any carrier..

no, they won't ask you to select a plan because activation is done on your computer through iTunes.
