recently I've been thinking about jailbreaking my iPhone but had second thoughts because I dont really know exactly wat it does. What are the benefits of jailbreaking? What are the downsides? Can I unjailbreak? Any info would be great thanks.

I think you should read read read and then read some more. I'm am all for jailbreaking. But as u can see from swaggers post there are lots of problems you can run in to. My first sugestion is that before you install a app to your iPhone reserch it to see if there are any problem with it and if there are if there are any fixes. Basically you can either live with a modded phone and deal with the fixes and tweeks or you can stay stock and wait a few months till apple releases there own apps. I personally have had my phone jailbroke for over two months with out any majors problems and ive got a best friend still on the 1.1.2 firmware jailbroke with never having had a problem. I hope u enjoy your iPhone jailbroken or not. Good luck!

It's a personal choice you have to make. Some people love to mod their cell phones to unlock hidden features. For years people have been doing the same thing with their Motorola phones on MotoModders.net and ModMyMoto.com, but there is always the chance of making a small mistake in the modding process that results in buggy side effects or bricking your phone. For these reasons, I've chosen to go with the opinion of the people at Apple and leave my phone with only its Apple-sanctioned software. My phone has worked perfectly from the time I bought it and I don't want to take the chance of messing it up. I can certainly understand someone wanting to increase the functionality of their phones, but for me it works pretty well in its current form.

I think if you do a little research to avoid some known pitfalls and problem apps, jailbreaking can be invisible to the end user (other than the new capabilities you add)

I stayed factory until 1.1.4, jailbroke with the Ziphone app, and have experienced exactly zero problems. You can tread lightly, install just a few things, and not get crazy with it. I highly recommend that route.

And know that it's 100% reversible. I've never heard of a phone bricked from strictly jailbreaking (now unlocking is another matter)

I hate to disagree with you. I until today even believed the 100% reversible thing. I found out today that is not true. I restored six times today, twice on a different computer. My mail application is DEAD!!! All I get is a blank screen, then the crash. I feel violated, wait no, I can't feel that way. No one held a gun to my head and said, Mark, Jailbreak your iPhone or die...M

Sorry to hear that Mark (glad you're back, btw... nice new handle :2cool:)

Did you set up as a new device when you restored?

Mine works perfectely. I started with a 1.1.3, jailbroke it. I kept getting the itch to upgrade to 1.1.4. So I did and jailbroke it. But as the psylichon said don't go crazy, and research each and every app you intend to install.

A jailbroken iPhone is much more fun, and useful than the boring stock iPhone. :2cool:

Whatever you decide, good luck, and have fun.
